Dream Hoarders is an uncharacteristically blunt book that speaks to an issue of well off people protecting their own which is rarely talked about. When I say well off I am not speaking of the super rich 1% to 10%. Yes I think the 1% to 10% have their role to play in resolve income inequality. I think the scope of Dream Hoarders is way too narrow in that it lets a large group of so called Dream Hoarders off the hook. First I'd suggest Dream Hoarders could encompass the top 25% of the working population instead of the top 20% the book classifies as Dream Hoarders. Also being Dream Hoarders must factor in many things this book was too lazy to do which is why I took away one star in my ratings. Someone making $100,000 a year with one child in Texas is more likely a Dream Hoarder. A person making 100K a year with one child New York City, Washington DC, or Los Angeles is almost impoverished living paycheck to pay check thus barely scraping by.Also Dream Hoarders makes one disastrous almost stupid assumption about poor students. Dream Hoarders makes the assumption that by throwing money at the problem of poor folks under achieving we can solve the problem. I started life dirt poor. I went to an inner city school as a minority youth in inner city BALTIMORE where life does not get any harder. I spent my youth in the Enoch Pratt Free Library reading borrowing every book that was not nailed down. You can't buy the thirst for knowledge and can't or transplant the desire to succeed. I went from living on Section 8 Housing and disability to being one of the Upper Middle Class because first I wanted it and Second because, I worked for it by avoiding the traps that other poor folk choose instead of investing in themselves. It makes no difference at all how much society invests in a person if that person does not first invest in themselves at a feverish pace. If you invest in drug abuse you become a drug addict or a drug dealer. If you invest in having per-martial sex before you can sustain yourself and your family you become a life long loser in a minimum wage hell flirting with being on welfare. I invested in reading books, learning to better myself. I invested in learning how the stock market works and how to profit from opportunities when I found them. I invested in myself so vigorously that those in power started giving me opportunities just to see what I'd do with them. I ruthlessly exploited every opportunity that came my way refusing the stupid choices to have babies and do drugs at every turn.Dream Hoarders rightly puts the upper middle class on the hook for the wrong they do in stacking the deck against the poor but, falls flat on understanding the key issues that keep most poor people poor. The weak minded poor are way too easily diverted into lifestyles where they are encouraged to invest in the criminal drug violence and sex worker occupations to their folly. Society aids the Dream Hoarder class by making it too easy for the poor to enter the drug hoarder sex worker class leading to arrest records and a useless loser lifestyle. Dream Hoarders is a book where a middle upper class elite shares his views on helping poor people he knows absolutely nothing about. Dream Hoarders was a noble attempt that got 75% of the problem rightly sorted and 25% totally wrong.

I am Canadian and currently living in the United States. Coming from solidly lower middle class roots, I am certain that I never would have attended University if I had been born here. It accurately explains in detail a lot of what I have personally noticed about how class works in America. While Canada is only marginally better in terms of class mobility, I prefer living in a society where there is that margin and plan to move back if I have children. As an elementary school teacher here, I personally can testify to how segregated and unfair the public school system is in at least Washington, Oklahoma and Florida. Simply separating funding of public schools from property values would be a huge start. America is really mortgaging it’s future by not educating its youth just so that the wealthy can stay wealthy. I see countless missed opportunities everyday. Bright children capable of doing so much more but who will end up working meaningless jobs stocking shelves at Walmart or flipping burgers their whole lives simply because they were born in the wrong zip code. The one thing I found lacking was better data to support his conclusions. But then again it would have made the book less readable and inaccessible to a general audience.I bought a copy for my upper middle class in-laws hoping that it might make them understand at least why I wince every time they rejoice about getting coveted internships for their friends daughter/son by using this or that connection.

This is an informative and compelling look at the growth of income inequality in the US, but it presents only part of the picture. To begin with what's new and different in this book, it looks at income inequality in a different focus. Instead of zeroing on the one percent as so many have done, Reeves focusses on the 19% -- those whose incomes come in between the 80th and the 99th percentile, a group that he describes as the upper middle class. The incomes of this group have grown much faster than incomes for the country as a whole (if less rapidly than the incomes of the 1%). Moreover, income gains have been bolstered and protected by other benefits, political and social in nature. The tax deduction for mortgage interest and the 529 college savings programs, for example, mostly benefit the upper middle class. The children of the 19%, on average, attend far better schools than most American children, and are far likelier to attend and graduate from college. This is not accidental, Reeves argues. Upper middle class parents are fiercely focussed on getting their children the best educations possible, by restrictive zoning and legacy admissions as well as by intensive home support. It's a compelling argument, and we -- most readers of this book are probably members of the upper middle class -- need to recognize that the deck is stacked in our favor. But it's also an incomplete argument. An excellent review of the book in "The Economist" points out the basic problem of focussing on the 19% rather than on the 1%, saying "Since around 2000 the incomes of the upper middle class, excluding the top 1%, have not grown by much, and the income premium earned by those with university degrees has plateaued." Over that period, the income of the 1% has soared: in fact, since 2009, the 1% has copped about 95% of ALL income gains. Politically, focussing on the barriers that the upper middle class has established to protect it's position is an admirable goal. But so is focussing on the massive income gains that the upper class -- if we may so call the 1% -- has wrested from the system. All in all, this book is well worth reading, but remember that the 19% is only part of the problem.

Georgina Rannoch thought she would have a few months to relax and help her flashy mother, a former actress, work on her tell-all memoir, until her mother goes running off to be with her current lover during a time of crisis. Still without a penny to her name and disinclined to go back to live under the thumb of her overbearing sister-in-law, "Georgie" is relieved to get an assignment that seems right up her alley: to prep a newly-found Australian heir to a Dukedom to the proper protocol of running a ducal estate. The Australian turns out to be a bright, handsome young man who's more than a little puzzled about all the hoops his English counterpart has to jump through, and the current Duke, who hasn't supplied the family with an heir because he's "that way," takes an instant dislike to him. He'd rather proclaim his valet the heir instead. Soon after he says so, he's found dead, with his Australian nephew's knife in his back. This is a fun outing in the "Royal Spyness" cozy mystery series, although you really don't care if the rude Duke has been murdered or not because he's such an utter pill! More fun are his male "followers," and Jack, the Aussie heir, is a good partner for Georgie's sleuthing. The mystery is reasonably complicated and the country house setting comfortable and familiar. A few anachronisms and inaccurate turns of phrase creep in, and for the life of me, I seem to remember a similar story in another mystery series. Still, another enjoyable visit with one of my favorite mystery characters.

I am a long-time fan of the Royal Spyness series, but this one is probably my least favorite yet. As always, there's a mystery to be solved, but this one was just kinda flat. There's a murdered loose in a family manor, but not much happens. Everyone wants to suspect the outsider, but Georgie feels he's innocent. Darcy is present through most of the book, but there is zero development with Darcy and Georgie. (I'm not saying that they should get on with it or anything, but isn't it about time for some kind of twist in their relationship? It is one of the over-arching plot lines of the series, and it really gets the backseat in a story that could have certainly used a bit more excitement)I thought the ending of the book was a pretty good twist, but arriving at that reveal was kind of lackluster.

This is another entertaining book in the Royal Spyness series of cozy mysteries. As with all cozy mysteries, it is not so much the mystery that holds the story together but, rather, the cast of characters and their interactions. As thirty-fifth in line to the British throne, the impoverished Lady Georgiana Rannoch is on yet another mission for her cousin, the Queen. This time her mission is to mold the heir to a dukedom in the intricacies of high society. Considering the fact that this heir was plucked from the wilds of the Australian Outback, Georgiana has her work cut out for her. Moreover, the Duke himself has his own ideas about who should be his heir, further complicating things for Georgiana. Finding herself stuck in the Duke's manor home with a motley crew at odds with each other, things go from bad to worse when the Duke meets an untimely and unlamented death. With assistance from her beau, the darling Darcy, and her best friend, Belinda, Georgiana hopes to put to right what has gone so horribly wrong. This is an easy, breezy cozy little mystery that fans of the series will enjoy, as will all those who appreciate this genre.

Georgie, technically Lady Georgina Rannoch, is once again desperate for a place to live. Her brother, the duke of Rannoch, has been convinced by his wife to set Georgia free--that is, to force her to find her own way to live. So when the Queen asks her to do a favor for a royal friend, she is definitely interested. When she finds out that the job includes living in a huge mansion and comes with food and the good life, she agrees to become a tutor for the new heir, just recently arrived from his life as a worker on an Australian outback. If this sounds too good to be true, you're right. Soon members of the family start to have accidents, and Georgie becomes involved. This is a fine mystery. Georgia continues to develops more depth, as do the secondary characters. It is not an action-packed novel, but the plot moves along nicely. If you have read some of the previous books, you might find this to be a notch better.

I experienced so many moments of insight as I read this book. Among them were Sam Schwartz's discussions on-The importance of maintaining lane and road markers and protecting roads from unanticipated sources of clutter and confusion, such as road signs defaced with graffiti that would confuse an automated vehicle image processing system;-The criticality of rethinking land use and street real estate allocations among vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians-The intricate understanding of the non-verbal cues pedestrians and drivers interpret when a driver is edging toward a turn and a pedestrian is trying to cross the street in the crosswalk. Mr. Schwartz's understanding of the complexity of this and the difficulty of having it be translated and used in an artificial intelligence system was masterfully conveyed.-The challenge of having cities and towns dependent on parking violations revenue find other sources of revenue to replace lost revenue. There were many more discussions that wove together the technological, regulatory, economic and social challenges of transitioning to autonomous vehicles. I particularly liked his discussion of the EU's Global Data Protection Regulations and the degree to which they will inhibit the data collection that any artificial intelligence system, including the one that operates with autonomous vehicles, needs to learn and improve itself. The one subject that might have been covered in more depth is the degree to which AVs will depend on curbside communications infrastructure that has fragmented ownership and leasehold rights, obsolete rules on who can connect to a utility pole, and the potential for municipalities to overcharge those who want to build out 5G infrastructure on municipally-owned poles. However, that is a minor omission in an otherwise outstanding book. This is the kind of book that has been written so thoughtfully that I expect to be an exceptionally useful resource 20 years from now.

This book is much less about autonomous vehicles than the author's decades old policy push to reduce the use of automobiles and infrastructure used by automobiles while ignoring much of the problems for the economy, Uber drivers, the disabled and the increasing numbers of elderly that would be caused if his policies were followed to the extent he hopes. Maybe he likes riding his bike in a snowstorm, but he should also try to get bike riders to stop ignoring red lights, stop going the wrong way on one way streets, stay off sidewalks, use lights at night, and use the bike lanes when available, etc. Maybe he should also consider writing about the advertised subject of his book. The most useful thing he discussed about autonomous vehicles was the idea that if those vehicles stop automatically for pedestrians, pedestrians would learn to ignore them and the cars might not move for hours in places like New york City.

Not very enjoyable. Gives extensive history of prior decades automobile facts which don’t ever feel very relevant to today’s autonomous vehicles. He makes definitive statements like ‘AV will clearly create more cars on the road and more congestion’. I’m not saying I agree or disagree but maybe that conclusion should have come after an entire chapter of discussions instead of just throwing it in blindly and factually in chapters 1-3.

With a background in traffic engineering, it is easy to understand why author Samuel I. Schwartz is a proponent of autonomous vehicles (AV). However, by the end of the book I came to realize that Mr. Schwartz has taken the same hard-eyed approach to this technology as he applied during his years of service to New York City.Even people who have the smallest amount of knowledge about the coming AV evolution have strong opinions about it. Some welcome this future while others are adamant about not riding in cars without a human driver. Mr. Schwartz is extremely educated on this topic, one that appears inevitable in one form or another. As with any major change, questions present themselves, some of which may not be solved before an army of autonomous vehicles are on the streets.Mr. Schwartz is not afraid to get his hands dirty, and one of the final chapters deals with the moralistic aspects, including who may be held accountable for accidents and fatalities. When one considers the myriad possibilities in the potential programming of these vehicles, including more loss of personal privacy, it is easier to understand the precarious balancing job people will have when deciding what programming the “driver” should adhere to in different situations. The writing is deep without being dry, multi-faceted without an overwhelming mountain of detail. This future is quickly becoming our “Now,” and this book contains more than enough knowledge to enable readers to understand exactly what is racing our way. Recommended. Five stars.

Review

“At a moment in cultural history dominated by the shallow, the superficial, the quick fix, Marilynne Robinson is a miraculous anomaly: a writer who thoughtfully, carefully, and tenaciously explores some of the deepest questions confronting the human species. . . . Poignant, absorbing, lyrical...Robinson manages to convey the miracle of existence itself.” ―Merle Rubin, Los Angeles Times Book Review“Incandescent . . . magnificent . . . [a] literary miracle.” ―Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly (A)“Rapturous . . . astonishing . . . Gilead is an inspired work from a writer whose sensibility seems steeped in holy fire.” ―Lisa Shea, Elle“Lyrical and meditative . . . potently contemplative.” ―Michele Orecklin, Time“Perfect.” ―Jeremy Jackson, People(four stars)“Major.” ―Philip Connors, Newsday“You must read this book. . . . Altogether unlike any other work of fiction, it has sprung forth more than twenty years after Housekeeping with what I can only call amazing grace.” ―Anne Hulbert, Slate“So serenely beautiful and written in a prose so gravely measured and thoughtful, that one feels touched with grace just to read it.” ―Michael Dirda, The Washington Post“There are passages here of such profound, hard-won wisdom and spiritual insight that they make your own life seem richer. . . . Gilead [is] a quiet, deep celebration of life that you must not miss.” ―Ron Charles, The Christian Science Monitor“Gilead is a refuge for readers longing for that increasingly rare work of fiction, one that explores big ideas while telling a good story. As John Ames might point out, it's a remarkable thing to consider.” ―Olivia Boler, San Francisco Chronicle

The works of Marilynne Robinson have been a gap in my reading. I am a protestant minister and one of my most faith-filled members has read everything Robinson wrote, so I thought it high time to read her. This book astounded me. As an old preacher, I was stunned how Robinson captured so much of the ambiguity, deep rooted faith and experiences of a life long parson. Does that sound a little confused? It may be. Marilynne Robisnon captures it all. The minister in the book has a rock solid faith, but a realistic opinion of his work. The descriptions of his work as a preacher hit home. Two thirds of the way through this incredible book, I knew that when I reached the last page, I would start it over again to revisit its power and to capture what I might have missed. If you are a minister, you must read this book. Robinson demonstrates the extraordinary in the ordinary. She shepherds us up to our own death and helps us face it with confidence. She validates our lives in places where we wonder if they have had any impact. She makes clear the power of the church. The little church in Gilead where Ames preaches will die when he does. But that does not mean the death of faith. The victory is just under the surface. Just under the surface, filled with wonder and majesty. This book is an amazing unveiling of the truth of the Christian faith, barely hidden behind the curtain of human mortality. Robinson's guided tour of the dusty, dry insignificant town of Gilead is a walk through the deepest of our human experience. She shows us how to celebrate life and God and appreciate every last thing about this life and the life to come.

Gilead is a slow-burning novel told in retrospect by an old Midwestern minister facing death. It is scattered and covers a wide range of experiences, as the minister's letter--meant for his child, who is too young to understand it yet--jumps between his childhood, his father's childhood, his time in seminary, the family drama of his neighbors, and his own love story with his much-younger wife. But the heart of the story is beautifully human and contemplative. This is not a story for the inattentive, or even for those who simply prefer a straightforward plot. Gilead's storyteller weaves back and forth between at least five different sub-plots, sometimes jumping ahead in one before telling us the meaning of the other. One almost needs to read it twice, simply to see again what he meant he made the reference to his grandfather in the first part of the story, before we had ever met his grandfather or known about his relationship with him. There is a central narrative of events that take place in the story's present, as the minister is writing, but this narrative is often sidelined by the stories of the past or general philosophical asides on Calvinist doctrine. This may make the book sound dull or didactic, but in fact it is neither. The Calvinist doctrine comes across more as a character trait than as the author preaching at the reader, and reflect more on the self and the needs of the soul than on the nature of sin and the cosmos. And while the book is definitely slow and contemplative--even the stories of the past rarely ascend beyond a shouting match, the human drama at the heart of it makes the entire story compelling in a way that should resonate with many readers. The minister has fears, doubts, and regrets like any man, but he is also, unquestionably, a good man, looking back at his life and struggling with jealousies and resentments he knows are unjustified. He is a good man without being an idealized one; a refreshing thing in modern fiction.Gilead is not a fiery book. It is not a fast book. It does not explode with passion or shout for your attention in the normal ways. It is wandering and thoughtful and at times conflicted. It is, in fact, most like sitting in the living room with a very old friend, talking of days that have gone by and days that are to come. It is a book for people of all ages, races, and creeds, and a book I thoroughly recommend.

Robinson won the Pulitzer Prize for this fictional story of an aging and dying pastor who wants to leave for his young son a written legacy of his life. John Ames is a third generation pastor in the little town of Gilead, Iowa. He has spent virtually his whole life in Gilead, and most of it faithfully pastoring a little church. He married young and had a child, but both his wife and little girl died shortly after the child was born. Ames spent the rest of his life single until age 67 when a young woman attended a Pentecost service at which he was preaching. He immediately fell for her and marriage soon followed. A little boy brought joy to their home but at age 76 Ames is dying of heart disease and he is acutely aware that his son would never remember him, at least nothing of significance. So the pastor used his remaining energies to write his memoirs, not just events but of his thoughts, what his philosophy and theology was and what concerned him about the future for his wife and son. The result is a thoughtful, heartwarming story about life, what is important, and how we want to be remembered.Reviewed by Gary E. Gilley, Pastor-teacher, Southern View Chapel

Foolproof was excellent and much more subtle and thought provoking than its subtitle “Why Safety Can Be Dangerous and How Danger Makes Us Safe” would lead you to think. Instead of a retread of the well known Peltzman effect (the idea that innovations design to enhance safety just lead to greater risk taking without necessarily increasing safety) the book is actually a subtle and wide-ranging exploration of when it is true, when it is not, and its implications (e.g., seatbelt—the original Peltzman claim—actually don’t have the effect because people forget they are wearing them so don’t actually alter their behavior much, but antilock breaks are something you directly engage with while driving and lead to less safe driving). The wide-ranging aspect is a substantial amount of economics which is Greg Ip’s speciality, especially the recent financial and eurozone crises, but also safety in areas like food, floods, wildfires, automobiles, airplanes and professional football. Although Ip somewhat heroically tries to extract some lessons from all of this, the real strength of the book is tying together disparate topics and making you realize that there are no easy answers to any of these questions. That said, I personally find myself generally more sympathetic to what Ip calls the engineers (i.e., the people who try to make innovations to increase safety) rather than the ecologists (i.e., the people who worry about preserving the ecosystem as a whole without disturbances like new safety innovations). But overall an exciting read and thought provoking whether or not you agree with every part of it.

Don't get me wrong it's a great book. Lots of nice tidbits of history.Given the author's background in Financial Journalism, it is unsurprising that stories of financial disasters and the events leading to them take up a lot of pages. Greg has of course done a good job in relating them to the main theme of the book, the safety paradox (how making trying to make ourselves safer from one thing makes prone to disaster elsewhere). If you like a good insightful read on the human obsession of self preservation and protection then this is an interesting book. It covers a lot of topics but is very heavy on financial disasters and their history. There was great potential to show insights into what neuro-psychological research has revealed about our behaviour but sadly that was lacking in this book. It is a good book to read once but not something I'd keep as reference.

While the premise - that making things too safe encourage unnecessary risk taking that may be more dangerous, is in some senses a logical outcome. And the authors discussion of how this related to the recent financial melt down was excellent, he beat the living daylights out of it to the point of becoming weary. While I would recommend it, be prepared to tear your hair out a little when it becomes tedious. I some ways, this is a rehash of a book called "Cycles" which posited that we will have another depression once all the people who lived through the last one had passed on, taking their risk aversion with them.

Mr. Ip is a singular talent in financial journalism for his ability to distill very complicated topics to digestible text. Foolproof is a must read for anyone interested in federal policy and regulation, especially with respect to financial institutions. Risk, perceptions of risk and self interested human behavior mean that rules do not operate on a simple linear system, but a complex and sometimes chaotic system where secondary impacts are not always intuitive. Even those of us who do not agree with all of the points made in the book can learn something, and appreciate Mr. Ip’s clarity and insight.

Greg Ip is a solid columnist with a fine writing style and a solid understanding of economics and human behavior. His book is well worth reading because we now live in a society that assumes that risk can be managed around. Ip points out that by avoiding small disasters we are likely to set the stage, unwittingly, for a large disaster.

This book was truly thought provoking and I enjoyed reading various analogies that the author has linked together. It's a worthwhile read that will help put things in perspective. I would especially recommend to students of economics and finance to help them understand real life applications, that life is not so linear.

It is widely accepted that the policy of suppressing natural forest fires has had two undesirable consequences. One is that more combustible material will make subsequent fires bigger; the other is that the lack of experience of recent fires encourages people to build in areas subject to natural fires, thereby increasing the impact of subsequent larger fires. This book describes other contexts in which measures to reduce risk that are sensible in the shorter term may be harmful in the longer term. The emphasis is on the second effect -- that changing perception of risk may cause changes in human behavior. In economics, for instance, the "Great Moderation" of comparatively stable macroeconomics (growth, inflation and interest rates), perceived as a permanent state of affairs controllable by government, undoubtedly encouraged greater risk-taking by both households and financial institutions, and set the stage for the financial crisis of 2007–08.The author paints a broad picture: river flooding and antibiotic resistance, catastrophe insurance and credit default swaps, automobile and airplane safety, and a dozen more topics. He writes in a familiar modern style -- brief histories of the topic, accompanied by interviews with or stories about individuals. To me, the book constitutes a very readable part of a first look at the big picture of risk in the "public policy" sense. However, looking at these particular topics through this particular lens gives only part of the story. As another reviewer commented, if you want to engage a conversation with someone knowledgeable about one of these topics, you had better learn a lot more.

I am not quite finished with the book, but so far, I think it is very well written. It covers a topic that is difficult to talk about and is often avoided. It has been challenging for me to get through; however, I feel like I should add my perspective. I was diagnosed with cancer at 10. I am now 15 years old and a teen-age cancer survivor. I am a volunteer and advocate for pediatric cancer awareness. This book has gotten negative reviews based on several points:1) This is from another reviewer: "The characters are not believable. They do not speak like teenagers. They do not even handle situations like teenagers do. So many interactions between Gus and Hazel are interactions which, plain and simple, just would not happen between real, emotional, scared, awkward, virgin teenagers, let alone ones with cancer who have been socially cut off for much of their lives."*My point-of-view: Have you spent time with any of us? They are believable as teen-age cancer patients/survivors. We may look like teen-agers, but in our heads, we are not. We have had to face our own mortality and make choices we should never have to make. It makes us grow up...quickly. Most of us do not act or speak like teen-agers because that is no longer how we think. After treatment, many of us find the things most teens (and sometimes adults) are worried about are trivial. Society cuts us off, but we are not cut off from each other. These types of interactions do happen. And, it is emotional and scary, but we learn to tell it like it is, without the normal fluff and awkwardness. We find 'normal' where we can and try to live every single day we have because we know that time is an illusion.2) The parents are not real, not deep characters, and they do not have their own identities.*My point-of-view: I have seen my own parents (and siblings) and the parents of other friends struggle with this. Many times, they do not have their own identities anymore. Every single minute is spent trying to make it to the next! They try to keep the family together and functioning, in spite of the effects of treatment, fevers and midnight trips to the emergency room, 3 weeks of the month spent in isolation, jobs in jeopardy, birthdays and holidays interrupted, not to mention talks that parents never want to have with their child. I've talked to my mom about this. This becomes their identity. My mom said their jobs become about doing whatever it takes, travelling all over the country (which is very common), researching new studies, and new medicines, all to help us survive and thrive with grace and dignity. It is also their job to prepare, if treatments don't work, to help us die with just as much grace and dignity.I hope everyone can read this with an open mind and an open heart. Then, reach out to the patients and survivors in your communities. They are wise beyond their years, funny, brave and inspiring.

The best stories are about memory. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green is quite possibly the best standalone novel I have ever read and is certainly the most phenomenal book I’ve had the privilege to experience in the year 2013. It is my third favorite story and favorite non-fantasy novel. The title comes from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, and it sets the perfect tone for this story written in the first person by Hazel, a sixteen year old girl in the regressive stage of lung cancer who nevertheless is required to cart around an oxygen tank because (as she so perfectly puts it) her “lungs suck at being lungs.” Her mother forces her to go to a cancer patient/survivor group where she proceeds to exercise her considerable teenage snark and wit along with her friend Isaac who is suffering from a type of cancer that eventually requires the removal of an eye.One day Hazel catches the attention of a boy named Augustus and their romance is as breathtaking and expedient as it is completely genuine and uncontrived. Augustus has recovered from bone cancer that left him with a prosthetic leg, but did nothing to diminish his spirit. She can scarcely believe he’s as perfect as he projects and indeed feels as though she’s found his hamartia or fatal flaw when he puts a cigarette in his mouth. Hazel is of course livid that anyone who survived cancer would willingly place themselves into its way again, but Augustus never lights them using the act as a metaphor of having “the killing thing right between your teeth, but you not giving it the power to do its killing.”Both of them together have enough wit and snark to drown the world in metaphors and sarcasm with just the barest dash of bitterness for their plight. Hazel whom Augustus calls “Hazel Grace” for most of the novel feels incredibly guilty that she’s allowed Augustus to fall for her as she and her family expect her cancer to return full force at any moment, and yet their relationship parallels the ever moving train of her mortality. So much so that Hazel shares with him that her favorite book is a story by the reclusive author Peter Van Houten called An Imperial Affliction.“My favorite book, by a wide margin, was An Imperial Affliction, but I didn’t like to tell people about it. Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book. And then there are books like An Imperial Affliction, which you can’t tell people about, books so special and rare and yours that advertising that affections feels like a betrayal.”Van Houten’s work is very meta to the larger story at hand being about a girl named Anna who suffers from cancer and her one-eyed mother who grows tulips. But Hazel makes it very clear that this is not a cancer book in the same way that The Fault in Our Stars is not a cancer book. Anna grows progressively sicker and her mother falls in love with a Dutch Tulip Man who has a great deal of money and exotic ideas about how to treat Anna’s cancer, but just when the DTM and Anna’s mom are about to possibly get married and Anna is about to start a new treatment, the book ends right in the middle of a-Exactly.This drives Hazel and eventually Augustus up the wall to not know what happened to everyone from Anna’s hamster Sisyphus to Anna herself. Hazel assumes that Anna became too sick to continue writing (the assumption being that her story was first person just as Hazel’s is), but for Van Houten to not have finished it seems like the ultimate literary betrayal. As terrified as Hazel was to share this joy with Augustus (and god knows I understand that feeling) it was the best thing she could’ve done because they now share the obsession and the insistence that the characters deserve an ending. The conversations of Hazel and Augustus are not typical teenage conversations, but they’re not typical teenagers. Mortality flavors all of their discussions and leads to elegance such as“The tales of our exploits will survive as long as the human voice itself. And even after that, when the robots recall the human absurdities of sacrifice and compassion, they will remember us.”They speak of memory and calculate how there are fourteen dead people for everyone alive and realize that remembering fourteen people isn’t that difficult. We could all do that if we tried that way no one has to be forgotten. But will we then fight over who we are allowed to remember? Or will the fourteen just be added to those we can never forget? They read each other the poetry of T.S Eliot, the haunting lines of Prufrock,“We have lingered in the chambers of the seaBy sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brownTil human voices wake us, and we drown.”And as Augustus reads Hazel her favorite book she“…fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”The quotes from this story are among the most poignant and beautiful I have ever seen.“Grief does not change you, Hazel. It reveals you.”“There will come a time when all of us are dead. All of us. There will come a time when there are no human beings remaining to remember that anyone ever existed or that our species ever did anything. There will be no one left to remember Aristotle or Cleopatra, let alone you. Everything that we did and built and wrote and thought and discovered will be forgotten and all of this will have been for naught. Maybe that time is coming soon and maybe it is millions of years away, but even if we survive the collapse of our sun, we will not survive forever. There was time before organisms experienced consciousness, and there will be time after. And if the inevitability of human oblivion worries you, I encourage you to ignore it. God knows that’s what everyone else does.”When I finished this I thought to myself, “How am I going to read anything else? How will I find something to match this? How can I pick up another book and not expect it to resonate with this haunting beauty, this tragedy ringed with comic teenage snark and tones that are themselves tragic in their sarcasm like whistling in the ninth circle of hell or laughing uproariously at the monster?” I realized I was lost. I could think of no negative critique unless you count the fact that the two main characters have Dawson’s Creek Syndrome where they’re teenagers who speak as if they were philosophers, but then again Bill Watterson did the same thing with a boy and a stuffed tiger. You realize the story’s hamartia doesn’t matter. That the fact that the plot may be cliched is unimportant and that dwelling on such trivialities is in and of itself a fatal flaw. This story is so much more than the letters and words on each page. It’s the triumph of morning over night when the night grows ever longer. It’s the dream of hope when you’ve done nothing but dine on despair. It is sad? Yes. It is heartbreaking? More so. Is it worth reading? Has anything sad and heartbreaking not been worth reading? The story of Hazel and Augusts deserves to be read just as the story of Anna, her mother, and dear hamster Sisyphus deserves an ending, and that becomes their exploit to seek out reclusive Peter Van Houten so that the characters can be properly laid to rest and remembered. The best stories are about memory.

My thoughts at 25%:I'm so confused. Why is this book hilarious, with all its witty banter and thoughtful philosophy? Shouldn't I be crying over the depth of the subject matter? Shouldn't I be feeling broken by the abject loss of the power of death - the way it's so all-consuming and doesn't care who it touches or who it hurts? How is it that I keep smiling this delighted smile and laughing gleefully over the way these characters find joy in spite of their suffering? Maybe it's the irony of Hazel's cynicism, I don't know.My thoughts at 50%:Okay. The end of Chapter 10? I can't stop crying. Augustus is funny and smart and intellectually stimulating. He's quick and clever and patient and gentle. But he's also a little bit of a smartass and he's impossibly fun. It's brutally endearong, especially combined with Hazel's matter of fact personality, her acceptance of life as what it is and not what she wishes it was. My emotions are so raw right now ... I need a break from the story ... And yet I cannot force myself to take one.My thoughts at 75%:I wear glasses because chronic dry eye syndrome gives me progressively horrifying eye fatigue, which blurs everything more and more the longer the day goes on. But right now I'm reading with my glasses off, and everything is a blur, because I can't wear glasses while crying. My thoughts at 100%:I finished this book somewhat disappointed. I didn't cry my way through the end, as I had expected to. But I read that last word, closed it out, and promptly burst into tears. For its appreciation of both life AND death, for its humor AND its realistic portrayal of devastation, for its twists AND its inevitable turns ... For its lessons and its inspiration ... Five stars.

i did not have that problem. my first attempt at making a boomerang was an instant success. i read the few pages on making your first boomerang and an hour later i had my first successful flight. it is a reprint of a book from the twenties or thirties and i got a kick out of one of the materials being a stick that is used to measure how much gasoline is in the tank of an automobile. Classic! cars may have changed since then but the basic properties of boomerangs hasnt. if you want to impress some kids just whittle out a boomerang for them.

Awfully dated but still a useful and informative guide for the beginner. I plan on using this as an easy introduction to the hobby.

Bought this as a supplement present for my boyfriend to go with a boomerang. I didn't think this was going to be as much of a hit as it was!! Easy to read and interesting. You might even be inspired to make your own boomerang.

Fun little book for me. I have learned to "customize" my store bought boomerangs. It has shown me how to teach my 6 year old grandson to make and throw boomerangs as easily as paper airplanes.

My nephew likes the book...well he likes the idea of boomerangs and I read it to him. It's fun of you want to build one.

Great

A 'classic', first read this 30+ years ago, still in print, still a great guide to making your own proper boomerangs, that really return, and the author explains gyroscopic precession!

A gift for a young man who needs help on tossing boomerangs. He says it has helped!

Corey Barker is a phenomenal graphic artist and photoshop guru. This second book, just like the first Down and Dirty Tricks, is not just for designers. If you are looking to improve your Photoshop skills as well as kick-start your creativity then this book is for you. You will learn valuable techniques for creating your own brushes as well as extracting and compositing images in photoshop. This book is geared toward those folks that are somewhat familiar with using Photoshop and teaches some of the more advanced skills. That being said even beginners will learn more about using photoshop in a variety of ways. For those who are just getting their feet wet with Photoshop I recommend Corey's first Down and Dirty Tricks book.

Corey covers just about every kind of project you might want to tackle in Photoshop. Along with Matt Kloskowski's book on Compositing Secrets, this book serves up step-by-step Photoshop recipes for compositing Hollywood posters, developing customized brushes--and how to use them--and 3d...it's all in here. If you've ever seen Corey give a presentation, you know how thorough he is, and this book is no exception. Every step, and contingency, is covered in minute detail. Photos are in gorgeous color, and they are given plenty of space so you can really hone in on the details. I would get this book, Matt Kloskowski's Compositing book, as well as one/both of his Layers books, and you will be in Photoshop Nirvana.

I had to buy this book for a class in advanced Photoshop skills. The projects were interesting, however, there are a LOT of steps that are left out.I've been working in Photoshop since it came out, and that was the only way I was able to navigate myself to the missing directions. Some were VERY time consuming, and I can't imagine someone without the background that I have in Photoshop actually figuring it out.Honestly, I was frustrated and unhappy with this book.

This book was a quick read, and it follows the clean, concise, visual, to the point pattern set out in other NAPP (National Association of Photoshop Professionals) books. There are images to demonstrate practically everything he describes. His instructions are clear, and thankfully lack the ad nauseam detail that bores me to tears. He tells you what he's doing, and shows you, including before and after. That's what I need. While I found the whole book valuable, my two favorite chapters were Chapter 2, the 26 Piece Tool Set, and Chapter 7, A Dream Within a Dream. In Chapter 2 there is a subsection where he takes a plain brown graphic, sort of fleur de lis-ish, and with layer style turns it into a dramatic, metallic, three-dimensional image (without using real 3D techniques for CS5 Extended). It was a very impressive transformation.Chapter 7 is about 3D, which requires Adobe Photoshop Extended CS5, and given the fact it is written by Corey Barker, the Photoshop TV (podcast) 3D guy of course it's great. He explains in the book that he also has a video demonstrating the topic on-line; I personally like the print version. I've see him demo 3D numerous times on the podcast, and seeing it is print, where I can internalize at my speed what he is doing is more concrete. I can then refer to it when I'm actually in front of the computer, turning my company logo into a cool 3D image. He also utilizes the define brush command, which granted, I've done, but really rarely use. He refers to it a couple of times in the book, to again create these 3D type effects, (again without using real 3D techniques for CS5 Extended) like lightening, or a blood splat, and I think to myself, "Now how can I work in lightening?" Because it looks so great. From the Photoshop 3D guy, 3D effects without CS5 extended.

If you ever watched Photoshop User TV you know who Corey Barker is. He usually gets labeled as the "3D" guy, but he is way more than that. He's actually the one person I've seen use every nook and cranny of Photoshop to create really cool designs. In this book he has taken his years of experience and teaching for Kelby Media and put it into something that is easy to read and laid out . It's labeled "For Designers", but I think it's for any creative person who wants to make their ideas standout. Ask yourself this:Have you ever seen a cool poster and wished you could do that?Want to market an item but your ideas look flat?Want to portray people in cool and visually striking ways?If you said yes to any of these then buy this book! I'm not sure how many tutorials are in here, but there are a lot. The tutorials aren't 20 pages long to show you one thing either. They are to the point and easy to follow. If you're still not sure, click over to PlanetPhotosop and watch some of Corey's lessons. I think you'll be back after that. Enjoy the book & share your work!

Perfectly cool book. I'm a graphic designer and I got a kick out of the cool things that I learned in this book. It seems like you go to school and learn all you can, but you always want to keep looking for books that increase your knowledge on the subject that you love, and this is one. I recommend it for professionals and even people that are interested in Photoshop. It helps if you know some of the ground rules in this application before trying the skill set in this book. Have fun. I felt it worked well with CS4 too, since that is what I have.

Easy to follow, full written instructions!!!! Used to learn more PS tricks and to refresh my memory on others.

I received this book today from Amazon. Wow! This is what Tutorial books should be like. Every page has at least two screen shots - more often somewhere like four (love it!). I like this format because I can use it as a fast-access collection of recipes, with the-before, the-after, and all the steps in between necessary to get there in a graphical format. I know about Corey Barker from watching his great tutorials on KelbyTraining. These types of books are a great complement to video training.I found that training is key to achieving excellence. This book helps me get there.
