Written mainly about slavery and not supporting a government that can allow it, but still topical. Excellent book - would have loved to hear him deliver the lecture!

I have to admit I've never read and Thoreau before but I will in the future. It's amazing that it takes an issue so offensive to the conscience such as slavery to make a man like Thoreau stop and consider his relationship to the state and vice versa. Amazing quick read. I've never highlighted so many quotes and referenced any book as much as this one.

Excellent treatise for the individual versus the collective. A master at describing the personal relevance of the complete individual during any time frame.

Well written and understood in his unique style of writing, Thoreau did well in composing his thoughts and beliefs in a fashion that is easy to follow and inspiring to behold. It's been a long time since I last read Civil Disobedience and this last time was worth it, even if only to agree somewhat but to understand wholly his arguments. They stand the test of time.

Good essay. I would have liked more on why the individual (and not the collective) is the powerhouse of a nation and how to reconcile it with our social nature. And maybe more depth on taxation being theft.

Despite my not agreeing with Thoreau's outlook on life, I have to grant the man credit for being of great intelligence. He tells his story, page after page in a way that deserves admiration; the fact that a reader does not see eye to eye with him generally, on the subject matter that is his specialty, does not detract from the capability he has ,to express and put to word, his philosophy.

Questions and concepts suggested by Thoreau, though logical and potentially freeing for all men, have never been manifested in government and our "democracy" remains but a sham of its definition. Thoreau was a man far ahead of his time as he was a man of his time, and there is a sobering sadness in both of those thoughts.

This is a good example of how history repeats itself. People seem to have always have a problem with government and others that are really running things.This book could have been written today and the author would probably get the same criticism or praise that Thoreau received back then.Everyone who is interested in how things occur in present times as well as in the past should read this book.

I have the first edition, first printing of this book and have read through it randomly several times. This year starting on January 1st, I decided to read it straight through on a daily basis, as Deng Ming-Dao no doubt intended it to be read. I have delighted in some of the insightful, inspiring verse and meditations on common every day situations; some of these have seemed deeply profound while simply stated. Meditation #82, July 1st, entitled "Flow" begins with, "If the boulders are moved,//Even a river will change its flow." And continues, "So it is with the flow of our lives.... The freedom to choose and to change belongs to us." However, there are other meditations or ideas that have left me cold. Today's meditation, in fact, completely turned me off when he stated that you cannot find the Tao if you live in an urban environment. That cities "stink," literally, and they are too noisy for anyone to become "fully realized." That cannot be true. The Tao, or enlightenment, may be experienced in any time or place as it has nothing to do with time and place. But Mr. Ming-Dao is entitled to his opinion as this is his understanding of the Tao philosophy. Overall, the work is worthy of daily or random reading. That this work has had more than 30 print runs over the last 15 years speaks to its enduring wisdom.

I have multiple copies of this book in print version, but Kindle version is very disappointing. The book requires you to cross reference the day of the year in the back with the specific meditation, which is numbered sequentially. With the book version, it's very easy--typically I even leave a paperclip marking the appendix at the back, look up number for today's date, then refer to it. Very difficult to do in Kindle version. And, sadly, author/publisher didn't link dates to pages which would have been the logical step to take.I LOVE this book--hard copy it gets a 5-Star, but Kindle version very poor.

This is my go-to book for reading before meditation. I've owned it longer than I've been married (21 years), and I had to replace my copy a few years ago because the old one was falling apart from use. All of which is meant to say, I love this book! I can't imagine how Ming-Dao Deng managed to include so much poetry, inspiration and wisdom in one small volume. I recommend it highly. Even though I've been turning to this book for many years, I continue to find fresh and relevant insights.

I have had this book in my collection since it was first published. Well, not actually this particular book, pages and cover and all. Paper books come and go with changes in life -- new work, new homes, new responsibilities, new leisure, new joys and concerns -- but Ming-Dao Deng's calm but not dispassionate collection of observations is my staple. Its availability as an e-book only makes it better. The day-by-day format works perfectly on my smartphone. It somehow has a more lasting presence, not being dependent on the physical necessity of a paper page. I'm definitely pro-book, but some wisdoms, like this one, travel better (in my experience) than conventional books I like the relatively recent new cover, also. It well captures the sense of 365 Tao. My delight is complete -- and as a Taoist, I am fulfilled. My only question: what to do in a leap year? Does the Tao mysteriously grow another day? ;-)

Pick the Plot A loud noise startled Owen awake, and he bolted up in fright, finding himself in darkness. The last few days came crashing back, and he squeezed his eyes shut. Wherever he was, he didn’t want to know. There were too many bad possibilities and not nearly enough good ones. The bad ones: 1. He was trapped in a book. The last he’d seen Bethany, the Dark had defeated her. And then Nobody had thrown Owen into a Pick the Plot book. That meant Owen could be in a story where he had zero control over his own choices, with readers deciding for him. This was the worst of the bad possibilities. 2. He was back home, but Bethany was still missing. Maybe the whole Pick the Plot thing had been Nobody trying to scare him, and instead of a book, Nobody had sent Owen back to the nonfictional world. So he was now actually lying in his own bed, which was good . . . but there’d be no way he could help Bethany. Slightly less worse, only because at least he was safe in his own bed. 3. He was back home, with Bethany still missing . . . and Nobody had completely separated the nonfictional and fictional worlds. Depending on what that meant, this might actually be the worst option. As Owen had learned while stuck in a sort of behind-the-scenes comic book land, Nobody had been trying to permanently separate the worlds, and Bethany was one of the last portals holding them together. So if Nobody had found Bethany, then split her in half like he’d said he was going to . . . what would happen? What if Owen opened his eyes and discovered a world without books, without movies, without anything made-up? Would that stuff all just disappear? And would the fictional people on the other side be okay too? Not to mention would Bethany be okay, split in half like that? All in all, that was three good reasons not to open his eyes, right there. Owen squeezed them shut even harder, balling his hands into fists, before taking a deep breath, trying to calm down. Just because the bad possibilities were awful didn’t mean there weren’t still good possibilities. He should list those off too, just to be fair: 1. The last few days had all been a bad, bad dream. 2. 3. Okay, having only one good possibility wasn’t very encouraging. And things like this were never bad dreams. That was just lazy writing in books. Owen slowly lay back down on the bed, purposely not paying attention to how scratchy this blanket was, and how his blanket at home was definitely not scratchy at all. C’mon, bad dream. And then another loud, strange noise came from what felt like yards away, and Owen’s robotic heart began pounding. The sound had been a horrifying cross between a scream and a growl, and definitely wasn’t his fictional cat, Spike. He clenched his fists tighter, still not opening his eyes. Maybe the sound had just been some dog that needed to go out! Or a cat fighting something bigger, like a . . . a tiger, or a truck! Not likely, but still possible! Either way, there was no proof that he was currently trapped in a terrible book where readers could control his whole life. Nope. No proof at all. “I’m at home,” Owen whispered to himself. “Bethany’s at her house, and we’re both totally, completely fine. And soon Mom will be in to wake me up for school, because I slept through my alarm again, and she’ll yell at me for it, just like every morning.” A louder, more guttural roar erupted from even closer, and the entire room shook with its power. That was not his mom. Owen dug his fingernails into his hands, determined not to open his eyes now, no matter what. “This isn’t happening,” he whispered. “I have to be dreaming. I’m going to wake up back home, and everything will be fine!” SHOW OWEN WHO’S IN CHARGE. MAKE HIM GET OUT OF BED. Turn to page 76. LET OWEN STAY IN BED FOR A BIT. HE SHOULD PROBABLY REST UP BEFORE THE CRAZINESS STARTS. Turn to page 141.

Excellent book for tweens! Clean, adventurous and captures their attention to where they want to keep reading!! Who wouldn't want that for their ten year olds? Depending on what you answer in the book, you jump to another section so you actually "pick the plot." Very unique!

I red this to the kids at work. It could be a little hard to follow even as an adult at times, but the kids really enjoyed it. We hadn't read the first three either (our theme this year is pick the plot), so that may have added a bit to the confusion.

My daughter loves this series. It was neat that this book was a little different than the others being a "pick your plot" I think she prefers the regular books more but enjoyed this one as well. She is anxious for the next one.

I ordered this book, as well as others in this series, for my granddaughter. She LOVES them!! They arrived in excellent condition. Shipping was fast.

It is kinda boring at the beginning but then kicks up toward the end of the first quarter. It is a good series and can't wait for the next one.

My son is LOVING picking the plot! He gets so upset when reading time is over!

My daughter loves reading these books for hours at a time, she says they're entertaining.

Once again Story Thieves didn't disappoint, It was amazing!! I'm usually not a fan of pick the plot books, but I definitely liked this one, and am extremely excited for book 5! The only problem was I went away feeling guilty for for accidentally killing Owen and Kara so many times, lol.

I keep buying this either as a gift, or I have given away my own copy over and over again, so I need to replace it. Nachman Breslev lived and taught over 200 years ago, yet his writing resonates with people today.The only thing I would change is the cover illustration which I find less than compelling and a little off-putting. If you can get past that, you will find comfort and wisdom inside. No prayer or meditation is longer than a few lines on one page. No matter where I open it, it as iff it was written just for me.

A well-written book of prayers, especially one meant to be carried on one's person, is worth its weight in gold. Unfortunately, all too many of them are about as inspirational as a dime store greeting card. Either that or they're so sectarian as to be of limited use generally.It was with some lack of expectation, therefore, that I purchased a copy of THE GENTLE WEAPON. Much to my surprise it was the one book of prayers that succeeded at being intelligent, inspiring, and -- while unabashedly theistic -- theologically sophisticated.I found only one prayer to be questionable: "...everything that happens to me... is an expression of Your everlasting love, and Your concern for my ultimate good." I prefer Reb Noson's prayer: "You send hidden messages to each person, in every situation, to bring him or her closer to Your service, in accordance with the place, the time, and the individual." So when I read "an expression of" I substitute: "embraced by."I highly recommend this book for anyone looking for meaningful and compelling language for personal prayer.

Love this book and often give copies as graduation gifts or to friends and acquaintances going through a hard time. Simple and heartfelt prayers that help you understand you are not (and have never been) alone inbfeeling the way you do- whatever emotion on the spectrum you are feeling, from joy to grief.

I love this little book. I'm reading it through for about the third time now. The first time I just devoured it. The second time a bit slower, now I'm trying to just read a few, maybe 2 or 3 pages a day and really think and meditate on them. I gave several copies as gifts and everyone that got one has appreciated it and really found it helpful.

This is a fine, fine book and speaks to every age and every spiritual background. It is so simple yet so deep. Read it before going to sleep. It will give you peace.

I read this book every day. It has helped me through some of the darkest days of my life. I am amazed at how many of these prayers fit my situation. If you are looking for hope, inspiration, solace...whatever, buy this book. I'm glad I did.

An absolutely marvelous compilation of reflections. Only dissapointment: the latest edition is printed in one color: type is red, which I'm sure is a publishing economy. It detracts from the appearance and readability of an other wise extraordinary book.
