Written mainly about slavery and not supporting a government that can allow it, but still topical. Excellent book - would have loved to hear him deliver the lecture!
I have to admit I've never read and Thoreau before but I will in the future. It's amazing that it takes an issue so offensive to the conscience such as slavery to make a man like Thoreau stop and consider his relationship to the state and vice versa. Amazing quick read. I've never highlighted so many quotes and referenced any book as much as this one.
Excellent treatise for the individual versus the collective. A master at describing the personal relevance of the complete individual during any time frame.
Well written and understood in his unique style of writing, Thoreau did well in composing his thoughts and beliefs in a fashion that is easy to follow and inspiring to behold. It's been a long time since I last read Civil Disobedience and this last time was worth it, even if only to agree somewhat but to understand wholly his arguments. They stand the test of time.
Good essay. I would have liked more on why the individual (and not the collective) is the powerhouse of a nation and how to reconcile it with our social nature. And maybe more depth on taxation being theft.
Despite my not agreeing with Thoreau's outlook on life, I have to grant the man credit for being of great intelligence. He tells his story, page after page in a way that deserves admiration; the fact that a reader does not see eye to eye with him generally, on the subject matter that is his specialty, does not detract from the capability he has ,to express and put to word, his philosophy.
Questions and concepts suggested by Thoreau, though logical and potentially freeing for all men, have never been manifested in government and our "democracy" remains but a sham of its definition. Thoreau was a man far ahead of his time as he was a man of his time, and there is a sobering sadness in both of those thoughts.
This is a good example of how history repeats itself. People seem to have always have a problem with government and others that are really running things.This book could have been written today and the author would probably get the same criticism or praise that Thoreau received back then.Everyone who is interested in how things occur in present times as well as in the past should read this book.
