A good introduction into the following languages; Vietnamese, Thai, Khemer (Cambodian), Laotian and Burmese. I have travelled to most of these countries and worked in Vietnam for close to five years. Vietnamese has relatively simple grammar but tonal usage is complex and you can end up saying something you didn't intend to say by use of the wrong tonal inflection(s), Vietnamese is also the closest to Chinese mainly Cantonese. I would recommend this book but be aware it is not all inclusive and is a primary starter, good to have some verbal coaching with the book too from a native speaker of the particular language you intend to focus on.
It's a handy little book. Honestly, as it turned out, we really didn't need it. Most of the people we encountered in Thailand and Cambodia spoke at least some basic English, or enough to make purchases, buy food, get a room. I will keep it for future though. The two things I learned that went a long way were Thank You and Hello. Smile, put hands together and bow slightly. The people we encountered were kind, helpful, inquisitive and they want to be able to communicate.
I didn't end up using this at all during my trip; it was not useful. Unless you are going to be in very rural areas It's not necessary. Plus the intonations are so important. It would be better to have a picture book.
Small and light enough to take with me backpacking and throw in my daypack
Easy to use and beautifully organized. Perhaps a larger dictionary of English to Khmer words would be helpful.
This is a great little book to get buy.

Honestly, I tried to use this a couple times while having trouble communicating. I knew nothing going in, so maybe this is my complete lack of Asian language pronunciation talking but I wasn't able to find the words I needed. It was better just to find someone who spoke English, or fumble through a menu on my own, or just go with the flow of not really knowing the language. It has potential, but didn't have the few really specific things I needed..
