A good introduction into the following languages; Vietnamese, Thai, Khemer (Cambodian), Laotian and Burmese. I have travelled to most of these countries and worked in Vietnam for close to five years. Vietnamese has relatively simple grammar but tonal usage is complex and you can end up saying something you didn't intend to say by use of the wrong tonal inflection(s), Vietnamese is also the closest to Chinese mainly Cantonese. I would recommend this book but be aware it is not all inclusive and is a primary starter, good to have some verbal coaching with the book too from a native speaker of the particular language you intend to focus on.

It's a handy little book. Honestly, as it turned out, we really didn't need it. Most of the people we encountered in Thailand and Cambodia spoke at least some basic English, or enough to make purchases, buy food, get a room. I will keep it for future though. The two things I learned that went a long way were Thank You and Hello. Smile, put hands together and bow slightly. The people we encountered were kind, helpful, inquisitive and they want to be able to communicate.

I didn't end up using this at all during my trip; it was not useful. Unless you are going to be in very rural areas It's not necessary. Plus the intonations are so important. It would be better to have a picture book.

Small and light enough to take with me backpacking and throw in my daypack

Easy to use and beautifully organized. Perhaps a larger dictionary of English to Khmer words would be helpful.

This is a great little book to get buy.

Honestly, I tried to use this a couple times while having trouble communicating. I knew nothing going in, so maybe this is my complete lack of Asian language pronunciation talking but I wasn't able to find the words I needed. It was better just to find someone who spoke English, or fumble through a menu on my own, or just go with the flow of not really knowing the language. It has potential, but didn't have the few really specific things I needed..

Ive bought every one of Kerry's books, and as usual, I love it. But this ones getting downvoted due to the preachy rant against "pit bull type dogs".Hey, people. Take a large, working breed, high energy dog. Doesnt matter what kind. Labs, german shepards, rotties, dobermans, bullies, golden retrievers. Treat it badly and reward it for violence. Itll be aggressive. Dogs are individuals. A small percentage are born bad. Most are average. Some are sweet. Most dogs labeled "pit bulls" are short haired muscular mutts.Couple that with the fact that any time a short haired muscular dog bites people, its a "pit bull". Heck, it doesnt have to be shorthaired. If its medium sized and aggressive, its a "pit bull". If its not aggressive, its a mutt. I own a purebred actual american pit bull terrier and people dont even know what she is and are shocked because they think "pit bull" is some massive mythological huge headed snarling dog, not my petite (48 lb) friendly girl pit. Please, please stop it. The stigmas bad enough already.I work with all breeds of dog and I'd trust a purebred pit over most dog breed not to bite me anyday.

As an RN, I enjoyed this book. It’s a million laughs! I would recommend to teens or college students who are considering entering nursing or medicine. While training, we cram and cram facts and techniques, but this book will introduce you to the human side of healthcare interactions.

I know This book was listed as a mini. It had several God laughs but I'd rather wait for a full length book.

I have read ALL of her books and there hasn't been one that was bad or boring. You might also look up "This is going to hurt" about an English doctor with a wicked sense of humour.

Omg these books are so freaking hilarious. I recommend these to anyone in need of a laugh. I even re-read them from time to time and I hardly ever do that.

Surprised to see this book announced on Facebook and of course bought it immediately! So readable, such a good author, usual complaint of too short!

As always from Kerry Hamm, a fun, readable book. I like quirky non-fiction books, and this fills the bill.

My 9 year old grandson has been using this in church on and off for at least a year now and enjoys it. He can figure out a lot of the words by himself and can usually get the others with some hints. Once in a while there are words I can't even figure out, so it's fun and challenging for all ages. I like that each page has a specific "theme" which once you've figured that out it helps in figuring out the words. There are so many puzzles that this will last for quite a while.

Christmas gift for my boyfriend's daughter. We always did word scrambles in dry erase markers on the bathroom tile so I figured she'd love this book and she does! great activity for kids, requires using your brain, always a plus when too frequently they love to zone out in front of a screen.

Excellent. My 8 year old granddaughter liked it. Love the way each puzzle was a different subject.

I bought this for my 8-year-old granddaughter. She, her aunt, mother and I sat around the kitchen table working on it. Some of the scrambled words were challenging for us all. Each page starts out with easy words, and they get progressively harder. We all love to play Scrabble, and this book is good practice for that. You won't be disappointed with this book.

The first ones on each list are easy and then they get harder. Six year old can do first 4 or so and then we have to help. Fun!

Not too hard for my 7 yr old to try on his own but still challenging enough to be worthwhile!

I'd say it's got a bit of your typical second book awkwardness going on for it wherein the author tries to establish a potential for more stories while staying true to the world they've created in the first installment. Cammie and her friends are determined to find out what it going on, even if it means bugging the boys' rooms.This was another fun episode in an entertaining series about a group of young geniuses who are learning to be spies.

The second book follows from the first book. The series has very little violence and age appropriate romance.This is the perfect novel series to get young girls into reading, light-hearted and fun books. Gallagher Girls reminds of the cherub series by Robert Muchamore, also great reads. This is a book that you cant put down and have to keep reading as it is so good!! MUST BUY!!!

asdfghjkl; these books are so fun! I can't stop grinning and while this didn't get any tears out of me, I enjoyed it a lot! especially the parts where a certain boy was involved (✿◠‿◠) I'm in such a reading groove with this series that I don't have that much time to update here while continuously laughing and turning the pages as soon as possible, but I'm already [almost] halfway done with book 3 and it's really good, too!

Even though Zach and Cammie's dynamic really bugged me in the beginning, it was so surprising to see how well they worked together. The climax was very suspenseful and I was just as shocked as the characters at the result. Good book!

I LOVE this book series which is why I wanted to buy them and place them in my home library. Unfortunately the shipping wasn't what I expected and the books I purchased do not look new at all. They look used and are all bent in the corners. One copy even looks as though pages are missing. Very disappointed.

The premise of this facile piece of pop sociology has built-in appeal: little changes can have big effects; when small numbers of people start behaving differently, that behavior can ripple outward until a critical mass or "tipping point" is reached, changing the world. Gladwell's thesis that ideas, products, messages and behaviors "spread just like viruses do" remains a metaphor as he follows the growth of "word-of-mouth epidemics" triggered with the help of three pivotal types. These are Connectors, sociable personalities who bring people together; Mavens, who like to pass along knowledge; and Salesmen, adept at persuading the unenlightened. I read "blink" and "The Tipping Point" together over the span of a week. Both books were very interesting and touched on similar insights into human behavior and psychology. "The Tipping Point" was similar in style to "blink" in that it presented a small handful of themes over and over to prove the premise the author initially laid out at the beginning of the book. Which is, of course, very convenient for the author. Gladwell essentially has a theory for why cool fads and trends catch on, and in writing this book he appears to have scoured a mixed bag of scientific and non-scientific psychological studies and historical observations to support his theory. The problem with this method is that its not the best way to prove the validity of a theory.One of the most excruciating passages in the book is when Gladwell tries to argue that former ABC news anchor Peter Jennings successfully swayed voters with his facial expressions in the early 1980's. A study apparently suggested that Jennings made favorable facial expressions while introducing stories about Regan but had a neutral face when introducing stories about Walter Mondale, and this caused viewers to change their voting habits. The author seriously tries to make his case solely on the fact that post-election ABC viewers were more likely to say that they voted for Regan than Mondale. It never even occurs to the author (even for a fleeting moment) that maybe ABC news viewers were/are more conservative as a group and thus predisposed to vote for a conservative candidate anyway. The sentence "Because serial killers drink milk, milk drinking must cause people to become serial killers" is a classic example of a Gladwell "proof."Taken as a whole, this book is a bit scary because its a likable best seller, but its unfortunately a sort of misguided Fox News or USA Today version of what could be a very interesting discussion. I hope more books will be written in this area, because it truly is a realm that needs more analysis.

Some may say “The Tipping Point” belabors the obvious, which is that things change, sometimes overnight. True, too true, but so what? Malcolm Gladwell, the master of popularized social research, makes us care about the mechanisms of seemingly abrupt shifts in the course of human events—such as why William Dawes’ midnight ride to warn that the British were coming didn’t start the American Revolution, but Paul Revere’s did. Turns out Revere’s personality helped his news galvanize patriots to pick up their rifles, while Dawes’ identical cry made people turn over and go back to sleep. Revere had two of the three traits Gladwell identifies as necessary to the spread of social trends: he was a Connector and a Maven. Revere had a vast rolodex of acquaintances in colonial Massachusetts and he knew everything there was to know about the nascent independence movement. He set the scene for resistance to the onmarching British, and a few local men of Gladwell’s third type, the Persuaders, finished the job of rallying the militias of Concord and Lexington. Gladwell is adept at explaining the academic research that led to such popular ideas as “six degrees of separation” and relating such social science experimentation to his overall theme of how change happens. He goes deeply into the discoveries about learning that led to the success of “Sesame Street” and “Blue’s Clues”—these shows’ producers used the idea of “stickiness” to instill basic principles and values in pre-schoolers. The “broken windows” theory of policing gets a thorough explainer, including a side trip into how do-gooding seminarians can allow themselves to avoid being good Samaritans. Advertising is one of the great accelerators of trends, and Gladwell marshals a few Madison Ave. case studies to show how commercials tip us into parting with our hard-earned cash. Absolutely painless learning is what Gladwell offers, with a side benefit of greater self-awareness.

As Usual, Malcolm Gladwell is a great story teller. The book is about the small things that can make huge changes. The book is interesting and fun to read, but there are two big problems:a) Malcolm Gladwell is not a scientist, and he lacks the skepticism which is so mauch an important part of science. He starts with the story of the crime fall in NY that came shortly after the start of the "broken windows" policy. The "fact" that the "broken windows"policy made such a huge change serves him well for his arguments, but there is a problem here. the claim that the "broken windows" policy was the main factor in reducing the crime at that time in NY, is an assumption, and by now we have strong reasons to believe that it played only a mior role in the crime reduction. Other factors such as reduction of lead in fuel have much stronger correlation with the crime reduction, and in many other places, as well, while efforts to replicate the "broken windows" policy elsewhere did not produce the same results. So his first chapter is about a nice but false story that if it was true, was showing an interesting nature of how vast changes in behavior happen.The second problem, is that the book was written before that Internet became a major player in the field. By now it is problably the most major player, but the book describes how things were before the Internet became a major player. In this sense, the book describes how things were in another era. Things have completely changed since then.

As a Board Certified Educational Therapist, I applaud Mary Gordon for her exemplary text. I was so taken by her empathic approach, that I will be citing her work in the second edition of The Clinical Practice of Educational Therapy: Learning and Functioning with Diversity, co-edited by myself and Jane Adelizzi, which should be out Fall 2017.

Mary Gordon grew up in a family of super-feelers, with parents deeply concerned about social justice. She couldn't buy black Mary Janes because little girls in India did not have shoes at all. And her family dinner table often included newly released convicts, invited for their first hot meal as free men. Gordon has now taken her extraordinarily high Emotional Intelligence and created a program to spread empathy across the globe, starting with elementary-age children.The Roots of Empathy program brings newborns into the classroom once a month and uses the experience to build lessons about relationships, parenting, and empathy. The program has been successful in reducing bullying, abusive parenting, and prejudice.Parents should read Roots of Empathy to learn real-world strategies for encouraging empathy in their own children. Gordon writes, "The instructor uses well-known children's literature to illustrate emotions such as loneliness and sadness and to underscore themes such as inclusion and bullying." Parents can use storytime to talk about feelings with their children, opening up the opportunity for those conversations later in life.Gordon's overarching premise is that babies are uniquely positioned to teach emotional literacy. Students learn by "observing the baby's experiences and the emotions they inspire; naming the emotions; anchoring the emotion in themselves privately through discussion; reflection, art, and journaling; and discussing their feelings with others." Parents too can take lessons from this progression. The next time your child sees a kid crying is an opportunity for you to help you child expand his or her emotional intelligence.Gordon also points out practices that inhibit the development of empathy. "Labeling children as the 'Down syndrome child' or the 'immigrant child' is a failure of inclusion," she writes. "It is defining people by their differences and erecting barriers to recognizing their achievements and contributions." Conversely, showing children their commonality with others paves the way for them to be caring, giving adults. The authors of the The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement similarly found that the most effective way to combat the growing wave of narcissism in American society is to create a sense connection with others. They wrote, "When we see ourselves as connected to others, egotism dissipates." Gordon's book puts a how-to lesson behind that conclusion.Gordon's book, however, is devoid of sociological or psychological research. The book is aspirational, along the lines of, if every classroom adopted the Roots of Empathy, we could change the world. This is repeated over and over in different variants and slows the book down at times.The book also includes a few dozen drawings from Roots of Empathy students, showing what their wishes for the infants that have acted as their teachers during the school year. Some kids wish for people to be nice to the baby. Others wish for the baby to have safe housing, or to live in a world with no war. The lesson from the drawings is that kids are naturally empathetic, and we only need to encourage those feelings to emerge. Gordon never discusses politics, but the reader might be struck by the fact that none of the children are concerned about wealth transfers or military strength, two constant themes in American political discussion. So there is a political lesson in this book as well: Our children display a natural capacity for empathy. This ingrained concern for others can flourish, if only we seek to show people what they have in common, instead of what pulls them apart. Most American political talk today, however, is about fights among factions--rich versus poor, Keynes versus Hayek, conservative versus progressive. Those divisive conversations kill empathy at its root, and there aren't powerful forces out there to create a balance. We've left it up to people like Mary Gordon to save our natural empathic natures from this destruction. But we need to do more to help them succeed.

Truly one of the great texts on watchmaking. As an amateur, I don't deign myself proficient enough to truly take advantage of the majority of the knowledge here. However, Daniels was nothing if not a great teacher, if this book is any indication. Being smart or extremely proficient in a subject does not at all have any bearing on your ability to pass that knowledge to another. Often, I'd argue, those that operate on the highest levels become incapable of explaining things to those on their way up. Any of you who have taken more advanced specialized physics/math/science classes will know exactly what I mean - that professor who was a genius but clearly was not capable of phrasing things in a way you were able to comprehend. Daniels clearly has no such problems and almost seems to remove the veil of complexity that surrounds many of the advanced watchmaking topics. His ability to teach is immediately apparent from the get-go.Daniels makes things beyond simple, despite their apparent complexity. While I am far from putting, as I said, the majority of the book into practice, I understand conceptually how every single thing in this book works on a mechanical level after about 3 complete reads. I have put a lot of what I've learned into use in my own watchmaking, and it shows. Daniels truly is one of the most important figures ever to touch the art of horology. Even just as a casual coffee table book, this one is a gem. The diagrams and explanations are beyond compare. If you are an engineer or mechanically inclined person of any field, you will delight in reading this. One of the best books I have ever had the privilege of reading.

This is arguably the last word in watchmaking, generously and clearly written and illustrated to provide just about every practical piece of information you need.I have owned the Third Edition for some time, and was very excited to see an update, especially in the wake of Mr. Daniels' passing in October 2011. I was disappointed to find that the only updates seem to be two color photos of Mr. Daniels, eight small photos of his shop from 2010, and the changing of "fifty years" to "sixty years" in the Acknowledgements. The Preface is still called "Preface to the Third Edition." The table of contents and index are also identical.So, if you are one of those lucky ones who already own the Third Edition, you're probably better off saving your money. If you weren't able to obtain one, and are somehow living without this amazing tome, you owe it to yourself to buy it now.

As someone who is looking at watchmaking as a possible career choice and a definite serious hobby, I checked out about half a dozen (all) of the most relevant books on the subject from my local large university library. Although there were some gems, I have never found a book that covers ALL aspects of watchmaking, from choice of materials and tools to use of a lathe and mill for cutting gears, design, casemaking, you name it. I immediately returned all of the other books I had checked out, in favor of this hefty tome. George Daniels is widely considered the greatest watchmaker of our time, and his language is far more modern than other books and guides that might try to fill this niche. The only downside is that this is NOT a book for someone who is just beginning their foray into the watchmaking world. Ideally, one would already understand the basic principles of the workings of clocks and watches, and have a brief familiarity with their parts and common terminology within the discipline. A great buy for anyone entering the craft pretty seriously, or someone who already is deep in it, but somehow hasn't already gotten this gem; it is not a great coffee table book for the uninitiated, as the pictures are useful, but they are intended to convey information rather than to look gorgeous, and the text is VERY DENSE, like a textbook.

This book is amazing. I have just received the latest edition, and cannot believe the wealth of detail and knowledge presented by George Daniels. This book is a masterwork, by a master of his art.It's not just for watchmakers; anyone interested in any kind of precision fabrication, metalworking, metal finishing, or tool making will find much of value in this book. Mr. Daniel's writing style is straight forward and to the point, no wasted words. You will feel as if he is watching over your shoulder, patiently instructing you in exactly what to do, how to do it, and why you are doing it.The book provides a level of detail that is stunning in its completeness, from making your own precision tools and using them, machining the parts, making your own polishing and grinding compounds, all the way to engraving and finishing, and finishing with constructing and using apparatus to test the accuracy of a watch.This is an extremely detailed and thorough treatise on how to design, fabricate, decorate, and test a watch. The only way to get a better education at watch fabrication would be to apprentice yourself to George Daniels.Highly, I say again, HIGHLY recommended.

An absolute masterpiece! One of the finest books I have seen on watchmaking. A true work of art. I can't say enough good things about this book. If you are a watchmaker, collector or enthusiast, you must have this book. Extremely detailed. For the professional, it needs to be on your shelf right next to Archie Perkins book on lathe work. By the way, the cost of this book on Amazon is a true bargain.
