Truly one of the great texts on watchmaking. As an amateur, I don't deign myself proficient enough to truly take advantage of the majority of the knowledge here. However, Daniels was nothing if not a great teacher, if this book is any indication. Being smart or extremely proficient in a subject does not at all have any bearing on your ability to pass that knowledge to another. Often, I'd argue, those that operate on the highest levels become incapable of explaining things to those on their way up. Any of you who have taken more advanced specialized physics/math/science classes will know exactly what I mean - that professor who was a genius but clearly was not capable of phrasing things in a way you were able to comprehend. Daniels clearly has no such problems and almost seems to remove the veil of complexity that surrounds many of the advanced watchmaking topics. His ability to teach is immediately apparent from the get-go.Daniels makes things beyond simple, despite their apparent complexity. While I am far from putting, as I said, the majority of the book into practice, I understand conceptually how every single thing in this book works on a mechanical level after about 3 complete reads. I have put a lot of what I've learned into use in my own watchmaking, and it shows. Daniels truly is one of the most important figures ever to touch the art of horology. Even just as a casual coffee table book, this one is a gem. The diagrams and explanations are beyond compare. If you are an engineer or mechanically inclined person of any field, you will delight in reading this. One of the best books I have ever had the privilege of reading.

This is arguably the last word in watchmaking, generously and clearly written and illustrated to provide just about every practical piece of information you need.I have owned the Third Edition for some time, and was very excited to see an update, especially in the wake of Mr. Daniels' passing in October 2011. I was disappointed to find that the only updates seem to be two color photos of Mr. Daniels, eight small photos of his shop from 2010, and the changing of "fifty years" to "sixty years" in the Acknowledgements. The Preface is still called "Preface to the Third Edition." The table of contents and index are also identical.So, if you are one of those lucky ones who already own the Third Edition, you're probably better off saving your money. If you weren't able to obtain one, and are somehow living without this amazing tome, you owe it to yourself to buy it now.

As someone who is looking at watchmaking as a possible career choice and a definite serious hobby, I checked out about half a dozen (all) of the most relevant books on the subject from my local large university library. Although there were some gems, I have never found a book that covers ALL aspects of watchmaking, from choice of materials and tools to use of a lathe and mill for cutting gears, design, casemaking, you name it. I immediately returned all of the other books I had checked out, in favor of this hefty tome. George Daniels is widely considered the greatest watchmaker of our time, and his language is far more modern than other books and guides that might try to fill this niche. The only downside is that this is NOT a book for someone who is just beginning their foray into the watchmaking world. Ideally, one would already understand the basic principles of the workings of clocks and watches, and have a brief familiarity with their parts and common terminology within the discipline. A great buy for anyone entering the craft pretty seriously, or someone who already is deep in it, but somehow hasn't already gotten this gem; it is not a great coffee table book for the uninitiated, as the pictures are useful, but they are intended to convey information rather than to look gorgeous, and the text is VERY DENSE, like a textbook.

This book is amazing. I have just received the latest edition, and cannot believe the wealth of detail and knowledge presented by George Daniels. This book is a masterwork, by a master of his art.It's not just for watchmakers; anyone interested in any kind of precision fabrication, metalworking, metal finishing, or tool making will find much of value in this book. Mr. Daniel's writing style is straight forward and to the point, no wasted words. You will feel as if he is watching over your shoulder, patiently instructing you in exactly what to do, how to do it, and why you are doing it.The book provides a level of detail that is stunning in its completeness, from making your own precision tools and using them, machining the parts, making your own polishing and grinding compounds, all the way to engraving and finishing, and finishing with constructing and using apparatus to test the accuracy of a watch.This is an extremely detailed and thorough treatise on how to design, fabricate, decorate, and test a watch. The only way to get a better education at watch fabrication would be to apprentice yourself to George Daniels.Highly, I say again, HIGHLY recommended.

An absolute masterpiece! One of the finest books I have seen on watchmaking. A true work of art. I can't say enough good things about this book. If you are a watchmaker, collector or enthusiast, you must have this book. Extremely detailed. For the professional, it needs to be on your shelf right next to Archie Perkins book on lathe work. By the way, the cost of this book on Amazon is a true bargain.

In my anatomy class my teacher said i HAD to read this book. But don't read if someone you know has recently passed or if this kinda stuff bothers you. Take it lightly and humorous.

Stiff: The Curious Life of Human Cadavers is an example of a morbid topic turned into a page turning and ironically uplifting read. Stiff is very informative on the history and uses of cadavers while also providing entertainment through Roach’s unique style of writing. Additionally, the book contains numerous gory stories about blood and death, but the real meat of the book is in Roach’s main point of the history and uses of cadavers. She uses real examples of scientists and researchers performing horrific operations on human remains in order to learn the anatomy of our complex species. The chapters are deliberate and in depth and they address a wide range of topics from impact studies for car safety to human composting as a new means of disposal. Roach is additionally accommodating enough to include informative footnotes in places where the subject deviates from common knowledge. One of the best things about this book, besides just the mere content, is the witty style in which Roach employs. She seamlessly integrates jokes and humor into her writing of dead people without being the least bit disrespectful, in my opinion. To make its case, Stiff appeals to both medical interests in the surgeries described and to historical ones in its ample amount of sources on how humans first discovered how our anatomy was designed. The prominence of death in the book however does not lower its accomplishments by any means. If anything, death and dying opens up a new conversation of what to do after we die. The only piece of cautionary advice I have is that certain parts are a bit too bloody and gory, which may lead to sensitive readers not being able to read every page. To oversimplify, Stiff is one of a kind and can be thoroughly enjoyed no matter what medical expertise one has. While prior knowing of the book’s anatomy knowledge is useful in understanding the kind of value it has, it can be advantageous for a multitude of audiences.

Having read Mary Roach’s newest book, Grunt, in which she talks about the science of keeping soldiers alive, I decided to read her first one, Stiff, for two reasons. One was to see how much she’d changed as an author, but two – and the bigger reason – was a fascination with the subject. Stiff‘s subtitle is The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers, and the book is about exactly that: what happens to our remains after we die? Like she did with Grunt (and, I’m presuming, all of her books), Roach divides the book into independent chapters, each focusing on different aspects. There’s the bodies that end up in mortuary schools, as well as those that end up dissected by medical students. There are cadavers used as crash testers, those that end up at the Body Farm (where decay is studied, among other things), those that are used to help understand airplane crashes…and those that were used to understand what happened to Jesus and others who were crucified. And there’s much more to be found here, including bodies as compost, as art, and more.It’s a fascinating subject, and one that put Roach on the map – and having read the book, it’s not hard to see why. Done wrongly, the book could seem insensitive, ghoulish, or just depressing. But Roach celebrates these cadavers, reminding the reader just how much has been gained from this research and just how important these bodies have been to not only medicine, but to our society as a whole. At the same time, she never shies away from the discomfort people feel; indeed, one of the most compelling threads in each chapter is discussing with the various people she meets how they manage to maintain a proper emotional balance when they’re working with the dead all the time.Roach is more of a presence in Stiff than she is in Grunt; it feels like more of a first book, and something she might grow away from as she went. But that also feels like a key part of why the book works; after all, death is a fundamentally personal event, and there’s little way to read Stiff and not spend time thinking about what you would want done with your own remains, be it cremation, burial, donation, or more. And Roach builds her own debate into the book, concluding the book with a chapter that finds her pondering what to do with her own remains, having done all these studies and researches into our possible fates.But lest that sound too heavy, Stiff is every bit as engaging and fun as you would hope from Roach’s reputation. Her digressive footnotes and odd asides are still evident, her willingness to ask questions no less charming, and her ability to bring a light tone to even heavy subject matters no less welcome. More than that, she finds depth and thoughtfulness to discuss beyond what you would expect, to the point where you get the impression that she could write a whole second book about bodies and never run out of things to say. That she does all this while being incredibly informative, demonstrating a gift for conveying complex things quickly, and managing to even tell stories, is just testament to her skills as a writer, and the deservedness of her reputation.

Have you ever wondered what happens to the body when it dies? Or how cadavers donated to science are used? Have you ever wondered if embalming keeps your body from ever decaying? These are just a few of the questions covered in this book.I absolutely love Mary Roach’s writing style! She’s hilarious without being disrespectful, and I can’t imagine anyone being able to write about this subject as well as she does. She keeps the reader engaged and asks the questions we are all curious about. . .well at least the questions I was curious about. This was a fascinating and at times a disturbing read. If you get nauseous easy this may not be the book for you. This may also not be the book for you if you are an animal lover. There are several sections that discuss experiments on animals – the same or similar experiments that are being done on cadavers – that was very difficult for me to read.

Skolnik, known worldwide for his leadership in radar research and development, has been affiliated with the Johns Hopkins Radiation Laboratory, Sylvania, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the Research Division of Electronic Communications Inc., the Institute for Defense Analyses, and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. He received his doctorate in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University, where he also earned B.E. and M.S.E. degrees. He is the author of the leading college textbook on radar, Introduction to Radar Systems (McGraw-Hill), now in its second edition, and the editor of Radar Applications. I was at NRL during Skolnik's tenure, and this book was one of the publications we kept on hand. While details of technology have progressed, the underlying principles are still just as valid. This is one of those reference standards everyone in the field should have access to. It was nice to pick it up used at a bargain price, but someone promptly made off with it, and I don't know if I'll see it again or not. ; ) Anyway, its a good reference, but you might want to hide it so it doesn't sprout legs. I'll be glad when mine returns from going on walkabout.NRLTEW.

This book is the perfect book to teach children the sacrifice that so many of us take for granted in this wonderful country!How loosely we can use the word freedom. Nothing in this world is free. It is paid for in so many ways by so many incredible men and women. So many lives given, injuries, and sacrifice so that we can enjoy the pleasures and freedoms of this country!This book is a wonderful reminder to be thankful for what you have in this country because the price was very high and to tread carefully in the way you honor these veterans by expressing your freedoms!The pictures are beautiful, the story is truly touching, the beauty of commitment and love it shows, and the importance of family and support is very special!I feel so thankful to have come across an interview with Tara (the author) about this book. I instantly found it on amazon and ordered it for our children. Also being a military family I was so encouraged by the love and support it showed from her mother!Every home in America should have this book on their children’s shelves! I think it’s incredibly important to educate our children on why they are so blessed to live in America.I look forward to passing this book on for generations so we can always be thankful and remember those like Mr. McClary and those who never made it back home.I will never ever take this freedom for granted! Tara has a gift for sharing her love and passion in a way that touches your heart! What a wonderful way to teach children the cost of freedom. A wonderful reminder to all of us to remember the families of all soldiers. Thank God for these hero's and Tara for sharing her story. My daughter and I love this book I recommend everyone share this book with the kids in your family along with all Tara's books!

This is a well written, delightfully illustrated children's book that teaches children and adults about sacrifice,love and service. It is their first choice when my grandchildren pick out books for me to read to them when they are visiting.

Oh My, Oh My!!! First let me say that Author Tara McClary Reeves in my opinion is one outstanding author.This is an amazing story of a little girl and her feelings about her dad. And the perspective of this book is one that not only helps her but others around her. The synopsis gives a great description, so I am not going to give one of my own. Instead, I am going to recommend it to all the military families, as well as to all the schools. It might seem a little off to mention it for schools, but think of how many of our kids have parents or other family members that serve? And teachers some times have to care for them. They sometimes see more than the family might see due to them not realizing how to talk or show their feelings so it can show in their behavior. This story gives us some ideas not only for the little girl and her father, but also for her mom, and how things affected her as well.So for the reasons above I will be giving this book a Breath of Life rating of: Five Clock Rating!!!!Disclosure: I did receive the above book in exchange for my honest opinion and orreview. But the Opinions are my own and yours may differ.

This is a fine book about how water has, and continues to flow to and away from our homes and cities. Great historical perspective and ideas for the future of our water cycle. My only complaint is that farm use and misuse of water was not mentioned. The fact that arid states have irrigated thousands of acres of desert to grow crops that should be growing other places is the true crime of water misuse. Those crimes have been highly subsidized by government boondoggle at taxpayer expense. The more that we understand our water cycle the better we will be in our future decisions regarding the most precious resource.

David Sedlak's treatise on the history and future prospects for water resources in our society is an eye-opening look at the remarkable engineering that has helped to make our civilization what it is today. His organization of water infrastructure development into four major "revolutions" seems appropriate and logical, and this treatment helps to explain the sometimes curious ways in which we currently access and dispose of the water we use. The book is an excellent read for both the expert and novice reader, and Professor Sedlak's deep understanding of the subject matter is readily apparent. The writing style is fun and easy to follow, and I found myself having many "aha!" moments as I read about development of treatment technologies and water delivery methods.Most importantly, Sedlak takes great care to highlight the significant and critical challenges that we face at this particular moment with respect to both water quality and water quantity. I found Mr. Sedlak's book very comprehensive. Considering the content, well presented and fairly easy for a layman to grasp, at least this one.What was most valuable was the many approaches to repairing & updating our current systems. It helped also to see the relative costs involved.Overall, most helpful & will recommend it to my study group.

This is a good introduction to the issues around water supply. Just wished that the author wrote a more comprehensive book!
