Skolnik, known worldwide for his leadership in radar research and development, has been affiliated with the Johns Hopkins Radiation Laboratory, Sylvania, MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the Research Division of Electronic Communications Inc., the Institute for Defense Analyses, and the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. He received his doctorate in electrical engineering from Johns Hopkins University, where he also earned B.E. and M.S.E. degrees. He is the author of the leading college textbook on radar, Introduction to Radar Systems (McGraw-Hill), now in its second edition, and the editor of Radar Applications. I was at NRL during Skolnik's tenure, and this book was one of the publications we kept on hand. While details of technology have progressed, the underlying principles are still just as valid. This is one of those reference standards everyone in the field should have access to. It was nice to pick it up used at a bargain price, but someone promptly made off with it, and I don't know if I'll see it again or not. ; ) Anyway, its a good reference, but you might want to hide it so it doesn't sprout legs. I'll be glad when mine returns from going on walkabout.NRLTEW.

I wanted the original copy because of the sections that had been edited out of the later edition. I am very happy to be able to procure this copy in such good condition.

This book is the perfect book to teach children the sacrifice that so many of us take for granted in this wonderful country!How loosely we can use the word freedom. Nothing in this world is free. It is paid for in so many ways by so many incredible men and women. So many lives given, injuries, and sacrifice so that we can enjoy the pleasures and freedoms of this country!This book is a wonderful reminder to be thankful for what you have in this country because the price was very high and to tread carefully in the way you honor these veterans by expressing your freedoms!The pictures are beautiful, the story is truly touching, the beauty of commitment and love it shows, and the importance of family and support is very special!I feel so thankful to have come across an interview with Tara (the author) about this book. I instantly found it on amazon and ordered it for our children. Also being a military family I was so encouraged by the love and support it showed from her mother!Every home in America should have this book on their children’s shelves! I think it’s incredibly important to educate our children on why they are so blessed to live in America.I look forward to passing this book on for generations so we can always be thankful and remember those like Mr. McClary and those who never made it back home.I will never ever take this freedom for granted! A wonderful reminder to all of us to remember the families of all soldiers. Thank God for these hero's and Tara for sharing her story. My daughter and I love this book I recommend everyone share this book with the kids in your family along with all Tara's books!

This is a well written, delightfully illustrated children's book that teaches children and adults about sacrifice,love and service. It is their first choice when my grandchildren pick out books for me to read to them when they are visiting.

Oh My, Oh My!!! First let me say that Author Tara McClary Reeves in my opinion is one outstanding author.This is an amazing story of a little girl and her feelings about her dad. And the perspective of this book is one that not only helps her but others around her. The synopsis gives a great description, so I am not going to give one of my own. Instead, I am going to recommend it to all the military families, as well as to all the schools. It might seem a little off to mention it for schools, but think of how many of our kids have parents or other family members that serve? And teachers some times have to care for them. They sometimes see more than the family might see due to them not realizing how to talk or show their feelings so it can show in their behavior. This story gives us some ideas not only for the little girl and her father, but also for her mom, and how things affected her as well.So for the reasons above I will be giving this book a Breath of Life rating of: Five Clock Rating!!!!Disclosure: I did receive the above book in exchange for my honest opinion and orreview. My only complaint is that farm use and misuse of water was not mentioned. The fact that arid states have irrigated thousands of acres of desert to grow crops that should be growing other places is the true crime of water misuse. Those crimes have been highly subsidized by government boondoggle at taxpayer expense. The more that we understand our water cycle the better we will be in our future decisions regarding the most precious resource.

David Sedlak's treatise on the history and future prospects for water resources in our society is an eye-opening look at the remarkable engineering that has helped to make our civilization what it is today. It helped also to see the relative costs involved.Overall, most helpful & will recommend it to my study group.

This is a good introduction to the issues around water supply. Just wished that the author wrote a more comprehensive book!

I've been in IT for about 10 years and decided that the ITIL exam was the next logical next step in my career. A lot of people have said the material is easy and you don't need much time to study for it, however, I wanted to take my time with this since I wanted to really learn the material and not just cram to pass a test. I passed the test on my first try about a month after starting the book. I took the pre-assessment which I failed miserably and then read every chapter highlighting important points and completing the end of chapter questions at the end of each chapter. I then reviewed the highlighted material and re-read all the exam essential information at the end of each chapter. I then took the two practice tests at the end of the book and passed the test with a 93% (got three questions wrong). Below are the pros and cons of the book.Pros:It prepares you for what is going to be on the exam. This book is all you need to pass the test.It easy to read with minimal typos and does a good job of covering the material that will be on the test.The practice exams at the end of the book are very accurate on what the test is going to be like. They are gold.Cons:There aren't enough examples of the concepts they cover and the ones that are there are not very good.There aren't enough visuals to reinforce the examples being explained.The end of the chapter questions are not a good representation on what the test questions will be like. If you don't take several practice exams before the real test you will fail.

I studied about a chapter per day and scheduled my test to take place a week after I finished. I got 39/40 correct, and I wasn't surprised by any questions.The material in this book is presented straightforwardly and requires no prior IT knowledge or experience to make sense. The chapters are short enough that you don't feel overwhelmed when you take the end-of-chapter assessments. ITIL has a clear, defined structure and this book mirrors that wonderfully. You don't have to skip between 3 different chapters to get the full picture of a technology, as I'm having to do on Sybex's CASP study guide. Only chapter 12 of this book I felt was a touch confusing.I would caution test preppers that the practice tests in the back of the book are deceptively easy. Download the 2 additional practice tests to get a more accurate feel for what the Foundations exam is really like. They should help you identify what areas of the book you need to read again.This should be the only study guide you need to pass the ITIL Foundations exam.

Disclaimer: I passed my ITIL Foundation Exam with a 92%. However, this book was only a small part of the reason why.I'm mildly disappointed with the book. Far too much detail gets spent on explaining the concepts beyond what is necessary for the Foundation level and a lot of subjects were introduced that aren't even needed until higher levels. The real world examples, while interesting, don't really add that much benefit to studying. The online material was helpful for review, although there was one question where the answers were for another question. The lack of a glossary at the back was a strange omission; you can get a copy of it online, why not include it in the physical book as well?All in all, it's average as a study guide but may come in handy if you choose to pursue a higher level of ITIL certification. If you use it as your only guide, you may be struggling through the exam.

A bit of background: I work in a company that utilizes ITIL, but not completely. Roughly 80-90% of our infrastructure is built off of what ITIL is.I purchased the book to get a clear understanding of the Service Lifecycle, to understand how our business works, and how to better improve it. Reading through this book, using a supplementary video course, and the practice tests provided in the book, I was able to pass over the mark by quite a bit.The book isn't perfect, as a lot of it I found to be wasted space. Sentence rewritten in a different format to fill space was pretty common, but sifting through the wasted space wasn't too bad. Some of it shoots past what is required for the exam, which I consider to be helpful as I'll keep hold of it as future reference material if I ever need to revisit it.I am quite satisfied with the book, and can highly recommend it to people not only taking the exam, but also for an ITIL reference when it is needed.

I passed! The chapter summaries and mini-tests are a great help, as are the resources that you can download from the publisher (see the back cover). Content was well written and easier to understand than some other material. I also recommends the app from AXELOS, who currently license the ITIL certifications. My only suggestion is a bit more overview, showing how the overall system fits together - I didn't really get the five stages' separation and relationships until I started mock-testing and re-reading. Same for the relation between the service portfolio and catalog, and the SKMS and its contents.

I read the book and completed the two practice tests at the back of the book. I scored an 88% on the certification exam! I was unable to download/access the online practice tests and flashcards that were advertised with the text. After 1 April 2015, there was a change in who provided online tech support, and I was extremely frustrated when I could not access everything that was supposed to be included with the purchase price.

A well written book about God's plan of the ages to purge and ultimately save all people. I was disappointed that the author apparently doesn't believe in the Incarnation and the Resurrection or even the divinity of Christ and declares that nobody had to pay the sin debt and God could simply have forgiven all. Christians would strongly disagree since it is Christ who makes it possible for mankind to come to God, and it is the Holy Spirit who brings us to Christ and keeps us in the faith. All of scripture speaks of Christ. He is present in every book of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. He is God in the flesh. Without Him the Bible is just another book. Without Christ there is no gospel.

As nearly all "Christians" who have gone from a strictly Bible based, traditionally moral belief system to the revelation of All Well Be Eventually Well, this author leaves moral, biblical roots to morph his Hope of Universal Redemption into a "God's good with all manner of lifestyles" theology. Not a scholarly look into the idea (Universal Redemption); just a "I no longer believe inconvenient passages of the Bible anymore," statement here and there, as though that somehow ought to satisfy the reader.

If Grace is True is thorough and intimate explanation of Universalism and a God that truly is about grace. For "traditional "Christians, this will challenge many of your long held beliefs, but read it. It is mentally healthy to view other beliefs and examine your own. Gulley is in no way intimidating or dogmatic, rather his writing is filled with the grace he writes about.

This book is having a great impact on my life. I truly believe God loves each of his children and will see them home. I no longer feel burdened to pray and witness to the "unsaved". I read every word Pastor Gulley has written, over and over.

This book makes the most sense if you truly have forgiveness in your heart. I forgive because I am forgiven! These words ring true....God will save everyone. I am a believer. This book can change your life if you'll let it. Read this book prayerfully. The authors use scripture to back up everything. Very eye opening.I give this book of love 5 stars!

I found this book very interesting. I’ve often felt that much of American Christianity limits the grace of God. This is an easy read and I found it well worth the time.

I wasn't going to read this, but a well-meaning friend urged me so strongly that I decided to give it a try. The better parts of the book are in the first 3 chapters. I appreciate the authors' arguments that the idea of Hell as we've been traditionally taught puts considerable limitations on the Love and Grace of God. If our determination as little human beings to resist God is stronger than His divine ability to draw us with his Love and Grace, his love and grace are not all that amazing. If God has picked and chosen who he will share this Love and Grace with and some aren't chosen, then His Love and Grace are not that amazing either.However their logic breaks down seriously in the last 2 chapters of the book. Jesus' divinity is dismissed, along with any serious consideration of Bible passages they find difficult. While I'm open to new takes on old ideas, I can't buy such fruity ideas based solely on the sentiments of the authors, it seems.I think I'll read the Thomas Talbot book others have recommended and see what I think. I'm certainly willing to be convinced that God is bigger and more powerful and more loving than the traditional Church makes him look. I appreciate these authors' hearts to try and relieve people of religious burdens rather than saddle people with them; however I can't take seriously such weak and unsupported arguments even for an idea I hope is true.

This book brought to light things I have been pondering and questioning about for some time. It is more in alignment with my idea of an all loving Father God.

When I ordered this book for my grand daughter, I thought it was an instruction book on how to build a city out of Legos. I was disappointed to find that it was actually a book about how buildings were constructed using Legos for the illustrations. But I changed my feelings about it when I shared it with my granddaughter. We both learned some new words about machines. She was really interested in the steps involved in putting up a building and I realized that I might be able to construct some of the vehicles just by looking at the pictures.The nonfiction part of the book is told in logical sequence with simple words and minimal text on each page. It explains the work of the foreman. It shows the steps workers take such as chipping away large rocks with the jackhammer or using shovels and wheelbarrows to take away the rubble.The illustrations are hand-drawn of Lego characters and vehicles and buildings constructed from Legos. Their bright and simple but clearly depict machines such as a bulldozer, ecavator, front-end loader, single-drum roller, compactor, concrete drum, skid loader, crawler crane, mobile crane and tower cranes.

My toddler grandson is totally fascinated by Lego Duplo construction vehicles and machines and has a lot of them and a special Lego table to build, tear down and play.This book was a Christmas present hit!

Purchased as a Christmas gift for our middle grandson as a way to expand his reading skills. So far, it has been great !

This is a book about how to build a building. There is no actual story/plot (like the other Lego City books). Bummer. This book may be good for a younger child who doesn't need a story plot. My son (5 years old) likes the pictures and descriptions though.

This book . . . deals in a unique fashion with the 28 Hollywood films Hitchcock directed, beginning with Rebecca (1940) and ending with Family Plot (1976). In this volume the author focuses on the leading actors in each film (usually two or three per film), the characters they portrayed, and the quality of each performance. In six to eight pages per film, the author discusses casting choices (who got the roles, who did not, and why), pertinent background material on each featured actor, a brief analysis of each character portrayed (prior knowledge of the film is helpful), progress and problems in the shooting of each film, Hitchcock’s treatment of each of the stars, the critical reception to the film and, most important, an evaluation of the nature and quality of each actor’s performance. Here, the author quotes generously from other film critics and often from Hitchcock, the master himself. However, usually the opinions expressed are those of the author and they are candid, honest, discerning, sometimes very harsh, but always interesting. The book concludes with source notes for each chapter, a filmography that gives a complete cast list and a rundown of the production staff of each film, and a brief index. Throughout the text there are numerous black-and-white photographs, many of them taken during filming. Because of the author’s unique approach to her subject, this book sheds new light on this master director and his output. Excellent look at the casting of Hitchcock's Hollywood films and how the choices made affected what was on the screen.The trick to enjoying the book is to understand that the book is limited in its scope. It only concerns Hitchcock's American films and it only concerns the casting. If you go into the book expecting grand tales on the complete productions of the films you are going to be disappointed. However if you go into the book and go along with what it's doing you will have a great time. For me the film forced me to stop and think about films that might have been or what might have happened if other films had been cast differently. The fact that the book forces you to really think about how all films are cast and the effect the casting is one of the book's strongest points.

A whole new perspective on this fascinating film maker

The author is quite right in drawing attention to the paucity of material regarding casting in Alfred Hitchcock's films, but unfortunately this book does little to remedy that deficiency. This book contains no original research, and after deciding on a fairly superficial main thesis--Hitchcock did not give much credit to his actors--Ms. Coffin slavishly follows this idea through brief (6 to 8-page) chapters about the director's films from "Rebecca" through "Family Plot."These chapters offer very little depth or insight. There is NO bibliography and her notes reveal she has relied mostly on the Donald Spoto biography of Hitchcock, the Truffaut/Hitchcock interviews, and star biographies published decades after the fact rather than consult original documents. Her book often contains egregious errors. Here is a typical example from her chapter on "Dial M for Murder":“When first purchasing the property of the stage play, Hitchcock wanted to cast the most elegant and beloved actress of the time: Audrey Hepburn.” This is just plain wrong. "Dial M for Murder" started shooting on July 30, 1953. Audrey Hepburn had already completed "Roman Holiday" in 1952, but the film did not get released until late August, 1953 and her TIME magazine cover came in September, 1953. In July, 1953 Hepburn was still an unknown to American moviegoers except for bit parts in foreign films (like her 12-second walk-on as "Chiquita" in "The Lavender Hill Mob"). This makes the rest of Coffin's "analysis" fairly painful reading, e.g. "Although a star like Audrey Hepburn would have been an undeniable box-office draw for audiences, she would have also been the biggest star in the movie..."Her chapter on "Psycho" fails to mention Hitchcock's overriding casting imperative with that film--getting the best actors he could for the lowest prices [Tony Perkins for $40,000, Janet Leigh for $25,000, Vera Miles for $10,000 (!)]--in the process of making a low-budget horror film. Coffin also does not seem to have actually watched any of Janet Leigh's prior films when stating, "It was unexpected to see a good girl like Leigh with short hair in her bra and underwear, committing robbery and trying to escape." Leigh's physical charms had unabashedly been presented throughout most of her previous career, and her portrayal of Linda, an alcoholic glamour girl marrying an older man for his money in "Safari" (1956) or Anna, a ruthless Soviet spy who uses sex to entrap John Wayne in "Jet Pilot" (1957) were hardly "good girl" parts. She literally had her bodice ripped (exposing her naked back) as Morgana in "The Vikings" (1958) and displayed plenty of cheesecake for the viewers of "Touch of Evil" (1958), so Hitchcock undressing her in "Psycho" was not unexpected at all: having her murdered while undressed was the coup.Apparently this book started as a college thesis--which is where it should have stayed until Ms. Coffin had done more research and consulted with more critical (& knowledgeable) editors that were available to her at Rowman & Littlefield.P.S. 5-Star reviews from family members [SEE "Coffintom"] are simply EMBARRASSING!
