I have always admired the cartoons of the New Yorker Magazine. Always a little more sophisticated, cerebral and cooler than the rest. Sometimes I may not be sufficiently sophisticated, cerebral or cool enough. Or maybe some are too sophisticated, too cerebral or too cool. And that is sorta the kind of punch line that one can expect from the New Yorker. . So far this year the Cartoons from The New Yorker 2019 Day-to-Day Calendar have been uneven.How important are the cartoons in the New Yorker? They are the inspiration to a serio-comic documentary: Very Semi-. There is even a published collections called: The Best of the Rejection Collection: 293 Cartoons That Were Too Dumb, Too Dark, or Too Naughty for The New YorkerI will be getting both.2019 so far, let down aside, I still recommend this calendar, and will be getting more from time to time in the future. The New Yorker Cartoon Calendar remains one of may favorite daily tear off calendars.

Always like this for my daily tear off calendar. Happy that they marked it down early on b/c I don't ever pay full price for a calendar, but hate to wait half a month to get a deal. I also like that this one has refrained from printing trivia, etc on the back -- I like to use them for note paper....

The humor of The New Yorker cartoons is consistent and if you enjoy those, you will enjoy this. I use the calendar at home and it is disappointing that the weekend calendar page is shared because there is no new cartoon to read on Sunday as I wait for the kettle to boil.

I have been reading the new Yorker forever. Love the New Yorker and the cartoons. This calendar, so far is a disappointment. The images and the text are tiny - difficult to read and so far the cartoons are not the best.

A recent workplace development course entitled " Effective Workplace Consulting" led me to this book. The return on investment was invaluable within the first chapter. Block confirmed that I was performing out of role and taught me to consult with peers and not take on their work. Within the first chapter, I have redefined workplace project roles and tasks, moved to 1:1 meetings with project team members and everyone thanked me as I gingerly gave them their work back. Block prepared me for any resistance which led to better meeting preparation...within the first chapter. I am now acting as a consultant opposed to "manager". My supervisor noticed the change and tendered a compliment on my meeting management within a week of my beginning this book. This book made the difference!.I should have read this book two years ago for my current role and 15 years ago as I started in my career. You cannot afford to not read this book. Personally and professionally Block will show you that you may be acting out of role, futilely exerting energy and setting yourself up for failure. The man speaks the truth. As a professional consultant I was intrigued to see how much of my reality matched up with Peter Block's and it is spot on. I really enjoyed his candor and truth in the struggles and opportunities to help clients make a big difference in their lives. It's a humble profession and Block's advice and system can help eliminate many of the pitfalls in not having a repeatable process. I highly recommend this treasure of a book.

A number of years ago, I found myself without a job for the first time in my adult life. At 40, this was scary until I woke up one morning, created a subchapter-S corporation and became a consultant. This book, along with others by Peter Block, was a significant help in getting started and having the confidence to persevere for two years independently. Now I'm a consultant in a big four firm and the things I learned from this book still ring true.

Having read over a hundred books in the fields of organization development, change management, and consulting, this book has had a tremendous influence on my practice. It is probably one of my top 10 of all time.Block does not talk about the technical aspects of consulting, but focuses on the way of being with the client and ourselves. This is as it should be. After all, we got selected for the job for possessing technical skills. That being said, Block advocates a partnership with the client for a joint discovery of the "real problem" and the "solution". This is in contrast to the traditional expert and the pair of hands models of consulting.

Flawless Consulting is a classic in books on consulting, yet I was slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, Flawless Consulting is a good and useful book that will definitively improve your consulting perspectives and skills, yet I had expected more. The parts of the book related to consultant authenticity was excellent, but the parts on consulting phases and contracting felt mechanic. Perhaps I'm just turned off by the phrases 'phases' (which often contradicts with a more continuous perspective) and 'contracts' (which often replace deep trust). The author did mention contract is more of a verbal/mental contract, but the word comes with a lot of baggage.The book is about 350 pages and contains 19 chapters plus some appendixes. It promises it is shorter than previous editions by moving more content online. The first few chapters set the tone for the rest of the book. The first chapter looks at the definition of consulting and introduces the 5 phase consulting process: 1) Entry & Contracting, 2) Discovery and Dialogue, 3) Analysis and the Decision to Act, 4) Engagement and Implementation, and 5) Extension, Recycle or Termination. The rest of the book follows these phases is chronological sequence. The second chapter introduces the collaborative approach to consulting that the book takes. As a consultant, you collaborate with a client on 50/50 basis to together help the client improve. The third chapter introduces the concept of authenticity to consulting, staying true and congruent to your own feelings and intuition and trying to truly collaborate on equal basis to resolve problems. These three concepts: 1) consulting phases, 2) collaborative relation, and 3) authenticity form the basis for the rest of the book.I won't summarize the rest of the chapters as the follow the consulting concepts in the order of the phases. The phases made me uncomfortable though as I've always viewed consulting as a more iterative and continuous activity where there is gradual discovery, decision making and implementation going on all the time. The strict approach that the book took to these phases felt very unnatural to me, but it might have to do with the different types of consulting. Some might be purely project/goal basis and some might be more continuous. The collaborative and authenticity concepts would fit extremely well with a continuous and iterative view on consulting though, so in that sense, I felt that was a missed opportunity.All that said, the book is a full with useful advise on how to improve your consulting skills. It is definitively be useful for any person in a consultative role and would recommend picking this up. Good.

This came to my notice as a consulting class e-book; I purchased a hardcopy after reading the first chapter. I highly recommend it to ANYONE especially if you are looking to learn how to communicate better in ANY situation; but especially when you are communicating from a lesser status position (such as at work; with superiors or customers). As for consulting itself; this is by far the best advice you could ever get; not just for yourself but for anyone you may consult for and their organization.

Louis Fantasia (B.A., Georgetown; M.F.A., California Institute of the Arts) is Director of Shakespeare at the Huntington, the teacher training institute of the Huntington Library, Art Galleries and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. He has produced and directed more than a hundred and fifty plays and operas worldwide. He was Director of the Shakespeare Globe Centre’s Teaching Shakespeare Through Performance Institute from 1997 to 2002, and was President of Deep Springs College in 2007. He also served as Dean of Faculty and Chair of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the New York Film Academy’s Los Angeles campus from 2011 to 2016.

The Historia Augusta is not exactly the most scholarly of works from the ancient world--but it ranks as one of the funnest. Taking inspiration from Suetonius, this work examines the men who led the Roman empire at its height. This volume starts with Nerva and ends right with the start of the crisis of the Third Century. While often fun and informative, be warned this is not exactly the most scholarly or balanced of sources. Still, there are some memorable portraits here of the emperors and the usurpers. One caveat for Kindle readers--a third of the book contains notes, indexes, family trees and maps. Some of this material proved hard to manage and is rather awkward (some pages have several large endnotes while others have one short endnote).

The book arrived after being on order for about 10 days and it was adequately packaged in all respects. I've always been fascinated with ancient and medieval history because therein lies the roots of the world in which we live now. This is an integral part of my self-education in my later life.

This book is a collection of biographies of the final Roman emperors, supposedly written by six men, but quite possibly a hoax written in the late fourth century. It includes seventeen portraits, as well as the earlier "Lives" of Nerva and Trajan.About Trajan, they wrote, "It was a fault in him that he was a heavy drinker and also a pederast. But he did not incur censure, for he never committed any wicked deed because of this. He drank all the wine that he wanted and yet remained sober, and in his relations with boys he harmed no one. It is reported that he tempered his wine-bibbing by ordering that his requests for drink should be ignored after long banquets." (Pg. 47)Hadrian "both honoured and made rich all who professed the arts---although he always goaded them by his questioning... He treated with the greatest friendliness Epictetus and Heliodorus and philosophers and... grammarians, rhetoricians, musicians, geometricians, painters and astrologers... Teachers who appeared to be unfit for their profession he enriched and honoured, and them dismissed from their posts." (Pg. 75)They record, "when Marcus was weeping for his fosterer who had died, and was being called on by the court servants to refrain from displaying affection, Antoninus' reply was: 'Let him be human, for neither philosophy nor imperial power takes away feelings.'" (Pg. 105)They state, "Commodus began a life of orgiastic abandonment in the palace, amid banquets and baths: he had three hundred concubines, whom he assembled together for the beauty of their person... equally from the commons and the nobility, by force and by payment." (Pg. 165)Although not the most "trustworthy" as a historical source, this book is very valuable to any collection of ancient Roman history.

The German scholar H. Dessau unmasked the six authors of the Historia Augusta (HA) as the brainchildren of one impostor, whom Sir Ronald Syme in his `Ammianus and the Historia Augusta' calls a master of historical romance.This book contains 17 lives of emperors from the HA, together with 2 small biographies of Nerva and Trajan compiled by the excellent translator Anthony Birley.The anonymous author of the HA mingled excerpts from other works, particularly by Cassius Dio and Herodian, with his own `fiction' to compile a parody of imperial hagiographies, exposing those who `belittle the defeated'.It is a work in super-Hollywood style with fake letters, bogey references and even an insult litany on Commodus. The latter `killed with his own hand many thousands of wild animals, even elephants.' During the reign of Antoninus Pius, `four lions became tame of their own accord and yielded to capture'.Hadrian was a Stakhanovist: `At one and the same time, he wrote, dictated, listened and conversed with his friends - if it can be believed.'Avidus Cassius had a schizophrenic character; he `seemed truculent and rough, but sometimes placid and mild; often he was devout, but at other times scornful of sacred things; avid of wine, and again abstinent; eager for food but able to endure starvation; a devotee of Venus and a lover of chastity.'Marcus Antoninus `made the bad good and the good very good.'Pescennius Niger insulted his soldiers: `You have the Nile and you ask for wine?'But the author is fundamentally a moralist: `Wretched is the republic which endures those men who are desirous of riches, and the rich.'Severus `killed many for allegedly consulting astrologers or seers about his health, especially each and every person suitable for the imperial office.... Yet the murderer of these men is regarded as a god.'Emperors don't need hagiographies: (Hadrian) `The lot of emperors is wretched, for they cannot be believed in cases of attempted usurpation - unless they have been killed.'This cleverly disguised author wrote a superb hoax, which is a must read for all lovers of classical literature.
