The Channel Tunnel (Great Building Feats), by Sandra Donovan

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-Donovan traces the history of the Channel Tunnel from Napoleonic times to the present through accessible text, color and black-and-white photos and reproductions, and a time line of the actual construction. The diagrams and pictures are particularly helpful in explaining the construction process. Throughout the book, the author is careful to present the sides of the French and British without bias. Each chapter progresses chronologically, beginning with a brief history of the English Channel, and ending with the successes and issues that the Chunnel faces today. This is an excellent resource for science, physics, and history reports. Donovan's clear writing, her documentation of sources, a detailed index, and a solid list of sources for further study place The Channel Tunnel above par as research material. An easy-to-use resource that would complement any collection.Delia Fritz, Mercersburg Academy, PACopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

Needed this for a school project. It provided lots of detailed information. Good book. Recommend for anyone interested in learning about the Chunnel.

This little volume (hardback edition) introduces the reader to the size and complexity of the English Channel tunnel, or "Chunnel" project and gives a brief history of the idea for it. It took a good many years to get the thing under way, since the British historically did not want mainland Europe to have easier access to England than was afforded by the notably uncomfortable boat passage across the choppy waters of the English Channel.I found a couple of questionable numbers on pages 28 and 29 that cast a little suspicion on the technical veracity of the book. But I guess I should accept that the author is an all-purpose writer who probably finds herself straying into subject areas that she doesn't fully understand. Perhaps the publisher should employ some competent pre-publication reviewers.

Review

"Nolan presents a sensitive look at the difficulties of teen pregnancy. . .Drawing in both reluctant and avid readers, this novel is an uplifting page-turner with a great deal of heart."--School Library Journal, starred review  "Readers will love Eleanor's openness and admire her strength in dealing with hard choices and unexpected disasters."--Publishers Weekly  "As revealed in her first-person narration, Elly is passionate, smart-mouthed, rebellious and completely endearing. Secondary characters are similarly well-crafted, refusing to fit into stereotypes. Readers may feel like laughing, crying and grinding their teeth in frustration, but they will always feel like they are in the experienced hands of a master storyteller."--Kirkus Reviews, starred review  "National Book Award finalist Nolan has written a multilayered character study of Elly, a young woman angry at the adults in her life but enormously resourceful and capable of love. The issues she faces—teen pregnancy, immature boyfriends, bewildered and angry parents, whether to keep the baby, and even the problems of overweight campers—all have their origins in grief and control. How Elly plows through this complex morass both before and after the baby arrives makes for not only a strong story but a subtle object lesson as well."--Booklist  "The combination of camp story and problem novel give the book high appeal, and the characters are complex and sympathetic, particularly Elly as she works through her issues and grapples believably with the forced onset of adulthood."-Bulletin

Pregnant Pause opens up with sixteen year old Eleanor Crowe: fierce, humorous, very pregnant, and about to be married to her baby daddy, party loving recent high school graduate Lam. After the wedding, Lam and Eleanor’s honeymoon will consist of acting as camp councilors (or councilor-in-training, in Eleanor’s case) for Lam’s parents’ weight loss camp for kids. It was either camp or being forced to live down the dirty looks of her Christian missionary parents in Kenya, so the camp would have to work. The things I really love about this book are its ability to mix many elements into one coherent story and how much the book made me think without it pushing opinions into my head.Pregnant Pause is truly unlike any teen pregnancy story I’ve ever read: it’s a teen pregnancy story, but it’s also a young love and ignorance story, a camp story, and a self-esteem story. The setting added a sense of release combined with a claustrophobic feeling, and everything is described in perfect detail. Specifics like the regulations of living in a “fat camp” provide (classes, food choices, etc) color to the picture, and I love how the author allowed the story to encompass more than one heavy topic (teen pregnancy and childhood obesity). The tensions were always present, whether it be Elly getting in trouble with her in-laws, Lam and Elly’s marriage on the rocks, or what will happen to Elly’s baby. As well, unlike most teen pregnancy books where the story stops when the baby is born, Pregnant Pause also goes past the baby’s birth (with the story still rolling strong). The only elements that could’ve used some more fleshing out would be perhaps Elly’s missionary parents and their daughter’s pregnancy and Elly in more depth researching options for her baby.Although this book has its touches of humor and the camp environment can be fun, this book also doesn’t handle its main topics lightly. Like I mentioned before, Pregnant Pause is not preachy, and it would be nearly impossible to tell the author’s opinion on teen pregnancy and the best option for the babies. But, it honestly shows what being young, pregnant, pretty much alone, and not sure what to do feels like. It makes people who would discourage abortion take a second to step back and think (while also commending the pregnant teen’s bravery for her choice). When it comes to where the baby goes, Elly never sits on one decision long, and the ending to the story, although it may be controversial, felt real for the story. It felt a decision that reflected a real teenage girl in Elly’s situation, and even though I personally didn’t agree, I appreciated it.In conclusion, if you want to read a truly unique, non-preachy teen pregnancy story, look no further than Pregnant Pause.

This YA novel dealing with rebellious teens, drug use and teen pregnancy is a surprisingly entertaining read. And though hits a lot of a big issues, Nolan keeps it easy to read, and maintains a fast pace, but though younger readers will be capable of reading it, it is probably a book best left for the older end of the YA market. Its Maine, summer camp setting sets a fun and familiar background. And for the most part, this book actually has a quite authentic and genuine feel to it. There are a few implausibilities scattered throughout (particularly towards the end), but nothing that spoils the book. The end feels a bit abrupt, but it is an emotionally absorbing read that will keep readers reaching for the tissues.

This was the best book I have read in a while! I have read a couple other books by Han Nolan and they were amazing... I'm only 13 and I think these books are amazing. The only thing I didn't like was the ending... I wanted a happily ever after type ending which I guess was the case but with the baby.... I can't explain how much I loved this book <3

I heard about the book a long time ago and I just now decided to read it, I figured it was gonna be like any other teen pregnancy book is read before. I was gladly mistaken! Pregnant Pause was such an uplifting and genuinely touching book! I would definitely read it again and I recommend it to all my friends!!!

I absolutely LOVE this book!! It is amazing. The story line was great and there were some tearful moments. It was the perfect book.

It's such a good book. When I started reading it I had no idea it would end this way. I love it!

I was first introduced to Han Nolan through her novel Crazy, a book that has stuck with me in spite of having read dozens upon dozens of books since. I remember being thoroughly impressed with the control she had throughout the book, giving each voice such a distinctive feel that they leaped off the page and grabbed my attention through dialogue and action. So, I was walking through my library the other day and Nolan's name jumped out at me from the bookshelf in the young adult section and I knew it was time to give her my attention again. Pregnant Pause, while not as smooth and polished a story as Crazy, was an entertaining read that had me flopping back and forth, much like the main character, between wanting to strangle her and cheer her on.In Pregnant Pause, Elly is a 16 year old girl with a major, life-changing moment about to happen. She's pregnant. And to make matters worse, she's surrounded by family in the form of missionary parents who are devoted to AIDS children in Africa, and an older sister (by at least a decade) who has been unable to conceive or carry to term a child. But sweet 16 year old Elly is not only pregnant, she's so pregnant that abortion isn't an option and she is going to have to figure something out. So she tells her parents that her boyfriend (who impregnated her on the first go, no less) has proposed to her. Much to her surprise, both sets of parents agree that marriage is the best solution. And that's just the beginning, folks.Nolan does a fantastic job of getting inside the head of a 16 year old. Elly is stubborn, but she is also young, as evidenced by her constant flopping around on decisions that need to be made. She wants the marriage, she doesn't; she wants to keep the baby, she doesn't; she loves this guy, she loves that guy...you get the picture. I felt like shaking Elly so much throughout this story that I'm fairly certain I gave the physical book I was holding shaken book syndrome. At one point, about 200 pages in, I had just about had enough. I felt like I was being constantly teased and that Elly was never going to get her crap together and figure out what to do with her life. She had her head in the clouds, like many 16 year olds do, and she had so many false ideas of just how perfect life would be - in spite of no job, no place to live, and most importantly, no high school diploma. It's at this point in the story that Nolan took a turn and really dove into the secondary characters.Elly has been living, with her husband, in a cabin set on the grounds of a campground that belongs to her in-laws. It's not any campground, however. It's a "fat camp," and 16 year old Elly has been thrown into some big shoes when one of the counselors falls sick. Nolan introduces a cast of girls who, like Elly, were aggravating, but real true to life, and that's when the story began to shift. The introduction of Banner, the touching on the subject of bullying and ways to handle it, the neglect of children based on their looks, it struck a chord with me and I wished the story was able to explore those themes more and less the theme of pregnant Elly - although then the title would have made no sense. So Pregnant Pause is simply a coming-of-age story; a story about a girl who takes an unexpected pause in the middle of her teenage years to choose a path. Will she choose to remain a teenage girl or will she grow up? You'll find out if you choose to pick up Nolan's story. Make sure you bring a Kleenex or two.

Some years ago I met Admiral Jim Stavridis. The conversation, while short, turned to books. If I recall, it was in Stuttgart, Germany, sometime around 2010 or 2011. Because he was the Supreme Allied Commander Europe and the U.S. European Commander (EUCOM), he had to divide his time between two locations: his NATO headquarters located near Mons, Belgium and his EUCOM headquarters in Stuttgart, Germany. At the time, I worked in the intelligence directorate at EUCOM when we heard he was coming by to meet the staff. It was a gray, overcast afternoon when he arrived. He promptly made his way down a long line of officers and enlisted, each of them posed to shake his hand and say a few words. I had only a few seconds to make a connection—to say something interesting or ask him a question. But this I knew: I loved books; he loved books; and while standing there, I thought of something he wrote that might prove that I, like him, believed that books are essential to our profession, if not our lives.Months prior, he had written one of his regular blog posts. In it, he said that his wife noticed that his love of books and his growing library had evolved into a “gentle madness.” That phrase—a “gentle madness”—refers to a wonderful book by author Nicholas Basbanes. Basbanes’ book—A Gentle Madness: Bibliophiles, Bibliomanes, and the Eternal Passion for Books — is a long, discursive work: one part discussion of historic book culture in America and Britain, the other full of profiles of quirky and dedicated book lovers and collectors. When the admiral finally reached me, I mentioned the blog post and the book. His eyes lit up and he said something about few people knowing the reference. He then told me he owned 4,000 books. Surprised, I said something about wanting a library that large. He then simply said, “You’ll get there.” The conviction in his voice floored me. I believed him. And he was right. I’m getting there (the featured image of this post is a picture of my library; today I have around 2,000 titles, give or take).Fast forward a few years and, no surprise, the admiral’s library has grown. Stavridis, in the introduction to the entertaining The Leader’s Bookshelf, says that he has in his “house today… more than four thousand books.” His wife, Laura, “has spent far too much of her life packing and unpacking them in postings all around the world.”Stavridis and his co-author, R. Manning Ancell, have written a book that is somewhat similar to Richard Puryear’s fine book—now unfortunately out of print—American Admiralship: The Moral Imperatives of Command. Puryear interviewed 150 four star admirals on a variety of topics. One of those topics was the importance of reading. And like Puryear, Stavridis and Ancell take a similar path. In The Leader’s Bookshelf, they interviewed 200 four-star generals and flag officers, and from those discussions, they determined the 50 books that “stood out most…with top military readers.”Using no particular scientific method, they rank ordered the books in descending order by the number of mentions. Thus, the first book on the list, Michael Shaara’s The Killer Angels (1974), was mentioned most often. While the last on the list, How: Why HOW We Anything Means Everything by Dov Seidman, was mentioned least frequently. For each title, there is a short essay by a senior officer as to why they choose the book, followed by a quote from the book, a biography of the author, then a summary of the book by either Stavridis or Ancell, concluding with a few sentences about why the book is important for leaders today. For folks that regularly follow the reading lists that are published by the Chief of Naval Operations or the other services, there are, unfortunately, few surprises. The regularly cited titles appear: Anton Myer’s Once an Eagle, Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, Clausewitz’s On War, John Keegan’s The Face of Battle, E.B. Potter’s Nimitz, and the always popular Steven Pressfield with his Gates of Fire. They all made the cut. While there is nothing wrong with the oldies but goodies, it was refreshing to see some unusual—or rather, some outliers—find a place in the top 50. Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s court makes a showing as does Norman Mclean’s A River Runs Through It. In fact, General Stan McChrystal is the senior officer that recommended Twain’s satirical novel about a man from the 19th century, Hank Morgan, traveling back in time to King Arthur’s court. The Leader’s Bookshelf, I confess, would be ho-hum if not for the additional essays that Stavridis and Ancell add to the book. It is these essays on publishing, reading lists, and building a personal library, that raise this book from mediocrity to must have. And here, Robert Ancell pulls his weight, adding a nice cherry on top with an interview with General Mattis.Mattis beats Stavridis in the book department. With some 7,000 titles on his shelves, he probably is the best read military leader—retired or active—out there. In the interview, Mattis mentions books that apply to each level of war. Of note, he recommends Lucas Phillips’ book The Greatest Raid of All. A book about a British raid that shattered the Nazi’s dry docks at Saint-Nazaire, France during World War II, preventing the Germans from using the docks for large battleships for the duration of the war. The raid resulted in no less than five Victoria Crosses. I had never heard of neither the book nor the raid. It is these little-known reading recommendations that make books like this exciting. You simply do not know what you might find.Ironically, the only criticism—or rather, observation—I have about the book is that senior officers still do not carve out enough time to read. And this in a book in which one of the early essays is about “Making Time for Reading.”In one essay, a senior officer admits that while working in the Joint Staff that he only read one book in a year. One book! While another, in her recommendation, wrote only two sentences to praise the work—and even then those two sentences were footnoted. Sigh.Nonetheless, The Leader’s Bookshelf will appeal to all types: The newbie looking for a good book to read and the bibliomaniac who may have read all 49 on the list and owns each first edition, but unaware, or didn’t realize there was just one more interesting title out there.

I cannot recommend this book enough.Amazon users are no doubt aware of the proliferation of books about leadership. What makes the Leader’s Bookshelf different is it provides a rich how-to guide for using books to your advantage and developing nuanced leadership skills. On its surface, the Leader’s Bookshelf appears just to be a book about great books. But it is far more than just a mere listicle in hard binding. Each book overview includes quotes from one of its four-star recommenders, providing a window into their thought processes, and a brief synopsis of the book’s main lessons for the time-starved.Many reviewers, and even the book’s authors, remark on the inclusion of books which are not part of the traditional leadership canon, including Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court and Isaac Asimov’s wonderful Foundation series. Finding these hidden gems is another great value of this book because it doesn’t shy away from finding value in unlikely places. The diversity of fiction and non-fiction titles on the list provides variety to the reader, a much-needed quality for those tired of trawling through the rote talking points of conventional leadership books.Beyond the books themselves, the Leader’s Bookshelf provides advice on curating your own library, writing, publishing, and managing your intellectual development in the rigor of our busy lives. These bits of wisdom remind the reader that writing, reflection, and thought leadership are just as important as successfully managing daily work activities.Five stars for utility, originality, and good writing.

Jim Staviridis’ gift to bookavores everywhere, The Leader’s Bookshelf is a difficult one on which to provide notes because it is so packed with great and essential material. What Stavridis and former Navy PAO R. Ancell have done is put together a Top 50 reading list for military leaders--they accomplished this feat by surveying hundreds of senior military leaders. The final list, though, only took into account the inputs of the more than 200 4-star officers surveyed. The authors then compiled the most frequently cited titles and ranked them by frequency of citation.I’ve only read about 12 of the 50 which lean a little too heavily toward the Civil War (5 of the 50, not including three on Lincoln). Each of the 50 books includes a prelude on its importance written by one of the surveyed 4 star officers. The distribution of preludes by service follows:6 Air Force16 Navy9 Marine Corps18 Army1 Coast GuardHe also devotes a chapter to an unofficial survey of junior officers and provides a short summaries of the titles that are most often listed. One of the strengths of this book is that it provides a framework to analyze future books. The author’s systematic approach to reading provides a useful framework for anyone desiring to better digest and use what they read.As a FAO, I enjoyed Staviridis’ analyses that repeatedly noted the need for regional expertise (across the spectrum of history and literature) to better inform national strategic decision-making.Key Quotes:“To be a good soldier you must love the army. This is a very unusual business memoir, because Benmosche was a very unusual Fortune 500 CEO. It is not focused exclusively on AIG but on its author. The chapters dedicated to his youth are enlightening and explain a lot about his approach to family and business life. Benmosche's outsized personality illuminates this book. Foul-mouthed, loud, unrefined yet perceptive and smart, he mustn't have been a fun boss. That said, as one who once worked for a very political Fortune 500, he must have been refreshingly direct. But most of all, he seemed to have had more courage than most of his counterparts and superiors, and if there is any lesson in this book, this is it.Although the author warns the reader early on that he will serve management lessons, this is no management manual: bringing your girl friend to the company you lead and continuing that relationship is hardly good advice. There is no mention of how he reorganized the sprawling company that was AIG, how he made it more efficient, how he simplified reporting lines, improved systems or promoted accountability.Rather, one gets the sense that he early on grasped the few key divestitures he would want to do at the right price, and stuck to basics, namely, pick good and loyal lieutenants, give the troops hope, motivate them, have their backs and insist on performance. It is no surprise that he admired Ronald Reagan. It is also a moving book, as Benmosche was a more complex man than his reputation made him to be. How he dealt with cancer was admirable. Perhaps what most attracted me was his unusual combination of in your face bluntness and pudor, and of course his courage. It remains to be seen whether Benmosche rebuilt a durable company or whether he held it together through the force of his personality. But there is no doubt in my mind that he was an exceptional man.

I'm looking at a photograph I took of a newspaper headline dated September 17, 2008 (St. Pete Times) in one of the sky boxes at Tropicana Field during a game between the Boston Red Sox and the Tampa Bay Rays. The gathering was hosted by a local money management group for the benefit of local financial advisors who clear through the same broker-dealer. The headline read "Feds to Rescue AIG" Subheading "85 billion will keep huge insurer afloat". The significance to me was that although the blow-up of AIG was caused by a group of bad credit default swaps in the London office, my brokerage firm was owned by SunAmerica which in turn was owned by AIG. While I may have been far from the scene and the AIG mess, I still had some interesting conversations with clients about what was going on. I titled the picture "Where were you when ..."The government ended up eventually pumping in over $185 million to keep the firm afloat and some months after the original announcement, Bob Benmosche was brought in to run AIG. He had previously headed Met Life (of the Snoopy ads and blimp and successfully took them public) and this book is his story to save the firm and return funds to the taxpayers. Initially, the thought was the firm would be liquidated and proceeds returned to the government with a net result that they would ultimately be out "only" $37 to $65 billion. Bob had a different idea.I have met a number of leaders in my life. Presidents (Kennedy and the Bushes), Congressfolk (Bobby Kennedy, Tip O'Neil, Tom McIntyre, Judd Gregg) and an assortment of billionaires (Templeton, Gates and Huizenga), I was not prepared for Bob. At the first of his meetings before our group, we got to seen the unvarnished Benmosche, a man as profane as they come. Bold, brash and aggressive would be putting it mildly. (I am often critical of Millenial writers who cram their books with profanity but here is a boomer like myself carrying on and he doesn't hide it in the book, just who he is.) He hated the idea of the company being broken up at fire sale prices and the U.S. taxpayer being stuck with the tab. He wanted to deal with the issues affecting each division, return them to profitable condition, then sell off what did not fit the idea of a true insurance conglomerate. (This included selling off our advisor companies to a private equity group a few years later.)Who wanted to prevent his following this course of action? Most of the government folks he had to work with, several of his board members (including the chairman), and members of his own legal team. Who was on his side? The employees and contractors since he returned a sense of pride to the organization, gave the workers their freedom to perform, and pulled no punches in laying out where he wanted to go and what the challenges were. He also had to deal with the widespread scorn being heaped on the firm and issues like his Croatian vacation shortly after being hired and the payment of "retention bonuses" to those in the division that blew the firm up, protesters at headquarters and physical threats against employees (to the point where some were being asked to remove their children from affected schools), and the "clawback" of bonuses from those who had already left the "sinking ship".A year into his task he was diagnosed with cancer but did his best to hide the nature of it, just announced he was undergoing chemo and the company doctors would keep the board informed of his progress. In one meeting I had with him in the hallway of large hotel, I wished him the best and he commented "So far, so good. Think I can beat this effer". Typical Bob. The book was interesting to me in that the medical issues are finally discussed. He had lung cancer and had been given a year at most. Then the good news came that a DNA analysis showed that the type of cancer he had was a type responsive to a new drug called Tarceva. The chances of that being the case were only 1 in 7. He went on to live a further 4 years, demanding work schedule and all.He forced out the chairman, worked out programs with a resistive government and managed to repay all the funds advanced plus a significant profit to the taxpayers.I'm giving this 5 stars, not because it is literary gold, it clearly isn't, but out of respect for someone who accomplished some amazing things against significant odds and has told a wonderful no-holds-barred story of how he pulled it off. It is interesting from a historical, financial, and personal angle and will probably appeal to folks just looking for a good story. RIP, Bob, it was a pleasure to have known you.

Good for the Money is a business book that is truly hard to put down. Bob was a complex man with an interesting story to tell which he, with the help of the talented writers Valerie Hendy and Peter Marks, tells very very well. I enjoyed the backstory - Bob's upbringing, early professional career and family life - as much as the details around his involvement with AIG and the near miracle he performed in getting it back on its feet and redeeming its name. Mostly he reminds us that there were and are good and hardworking people at the companies like AIG that screwed up big, though you wouldn't have known it through the worst of the crisis. I found myself thinking more than once, I would have liked the opportunity to work with Bob Benmosche.

Anyone outside the world of business could benefit from this great comeback story. Too bad the comeback wasn't deemed as newsworthy as the earlier mistakes of AIG. Congratulations to all who stayed the course and endured the grief.

The book was a great look into the story of AIG and how the story unfolded from the inside. The personal story of Bob and what he did, and why he did it, was great to hear about in an era where principles give way to greed more often than not. I would recomend this for anyone who is interested in reading about an amazing business turnaround, as well as people who are interested in how to better your own management style to get the most out of your people.

My best Read of 2016 so far. It is extremely rare to find a biography of a business leader that is fast pace and riveting. Bob showed decisive leadership in times of crisis and what a true leader would do stood up for his team. He is remarkably candid about his life and that reflects the strength of his character.Excellent book certainly has helped me in understanding about leading from the front, in tough and challenging situation.

Introduction Enigmas, charades, and conundrums were very popular in the time of Jane Austen, as evinced in her 1816 novel Emma, where the following is cited as a well-known “charade”: My first doth affliction denote,Which my second is destin’d to feelAnd my whole is the best antidoteThat affliction to soften and heal. Here, the first is “woe” (affliction) and the second “man”. The whole, then is “woman”.  Times change, and such charades hold little interest now, even if we can overlook the obvious sexism.             The lifestyle of the nineteenth-century landed gentry in England might an alien landscape to us, but Austen’s six published novels, which are all against this backdrop, have an enduring appeal to this day.             Perhaps it is her tell-it-like-it-is style that still rings true, even if the dialogue is antiquated. The social obstacle course of acceptability and interpersonal attraction might have been reconfigured, but it still exists, and we recognize it in the lavish balls and matchmaking machinations that fill her works.             Pride and Prejudice was published a full century before Emily Davison threw herself in front of the King’s horse to protest women’s suffrage, and it is important to keep this in mind when judging Austen’s style as “safe” or “subversive”. Her critique of the mores and manners of her time might seem gentle now, but her quill had quite a sting.            Her protagonists are women who must use their wit and imagination to find their way to happiness in a patriarchal society. Misunderstandings and miscommunication invariably make each story a puzzle that must be resolved before the principals can be joined in conjugal felicity. It is a game, however, that Jane herself preferred to enjoy as a spectator instead of as a participant; her own biography is frustratingly sparse, and she chose not to get married.            The puzzles in this book are predominantly riddles and lateral-thinking conundrums with a helping of logic problems and visual brainteasers. You do not have to be a Jane Austen aficionado to attempt them, but if you have not yet experienced Miss Austen’s novels, perhaps this humble manuscript might tempt you to do so.

So, I've always been a fan of the "zombie" drink, but it is pretty hard to find a good one. There is so much rum in it that if you get the ingredients or ratios wrong, it turns into an unpleasant shot of rum and bad flavors. So, I rarely order them.Last October, I tried to make one, thinking a "zombie" would be a perfect drink for a Halloween party, and thinking it would be nice to learn how to make one so I didn't have to rely on the lame ones I have received in the past. A couple of attempts using internet recipes turned out very badly. Sigh.Just wait - I'm getting to the book ...In November, we got an invitation to a tiki bar in San Diego called "False Idol" and I decided to ordered their zombie. The angels sang. The pearly gates opened and I walked into heaven. Awesome. So, in December, I was travelling in San Francisco and went to the Tonga Room there. It was very disappointing. Drinks were quite poor, which was a big surprise for such a long-established icon. As I was reading Yelp reviews on the Tonga Room, I saw mention of a place called Smuggles Cove in San Francisco that had won awards, voted best bar in America, one of the best in the world, yada, yada, yada. And I was kicking myself for going to the Tonga Room instead of Smugglers Cove. Apparently the owner, Martin Cate, really knows his cocktails, and - ta-da - is a partner in the False Idol in San Diego and the guy behind the drinks there !In January, I stumbled upon his book on Amazon - some web search or Amazon search brought it up, I'm sure. I don't remember. I saw the title, noted the author, saw that it had recipes in it and ordered it. I was a little concerned that it would be lots of stories and not much recpies, but it turns out it is alot of stories and also alot of recipes.I am very surprised that a bar owner in a business where drink recpies have been traditionally kept secret is willing to spill the beans like this. He has presented so many secrets, along with the stories and history behind the secrets and also given credit to alot of the people responsible for digging up the secrets. It's mighty big of him, I think, and consider this a big "thank you" for writing this book. Some good things about the book:- Martin has developed a list of rum categories based on production method to assist in the selection of rums for the recipes. Most of the recipes in the book don't call for a particular brand and style of rum, but call for a certain category of rum, which could be one of many brands and styles. It is really smart and really helps the budget, too, because you don't have to buy the $80 bottle if you don't want to.- Really a lot of recipes in here. I saw one Amazon reivew saying there weren't many recipes. That is just wrong. The recipes are scattered throughout the book and relate to the text in each chapter, but there are more than anyone could want.- Also, reading between the lines, you can figure out how to take any of these cocktails and change the ingredients to make your own recipes, so the number of recipes is unlimited if you are willing to experiment.- Martin lists a whole bunch of syrups and concoctions that are used in the recipes. This is very helpful, and again - very generous of him to show us these secrets from his bars. Real grenadine syrup, demerera sugar syrup, cinnamon syrup, passion fruit syrup, etc.- I am surprised by a couple things. First - that the drinks are not necessarily super sweet and fruity. Second, there are an extraordinary number of interesting ingredients that I never knew existed or how they were used. These ingredients are herbal, spicey or savory and keep the drinks from getting too that sweet.- Great details on ice choice and mixing techniques.- I'm not that much into tiki decor so alot of that design stuff was not interesting to me, but I also feel the book would be incomplete without it.Things I would add or change / the downside:- I would like to see some descriptions of the non-rum ingredients on the recipe pages. As I was looking through the recipes, many listed ingredients that I didn't know what the heck they were. Maybe they were in the text, but I didn't want to hunt through and find it. It would be nice if some explanation were given for those, or maybe put a little reference section in the back and add a page number to the recipe so you can read up on it, like "Benedictine (see page 444)".- Some of the syrups were a little sweet, making it difficult to adjust the recipe without changing the sweetness. For example, I made a drink with the cinnamon syrup and wanted more cinnamon flavor. So, I added some cinnamon syrup, but it was too sweet. The syrups make perfect sense in a bar where you want the bartenders to make the same thing every time, and save some work. But if you want to tinker, it may be better to just add the ingredients separately.- This is an expensive hobby. Martin has done a good job making sure we don't waste our money by putting expensive ingredients into bad cocktails, but it aint cheap.I have made about 6 of the recipes so far. Enjoying them all, especially the zombie and the Planters Punch !I hope to meet Martin some day. He's done a great job with his bar in San Diego and the book. Thanks a bunch !

Smuggler's Cove is the book to have for tiki cocktails. I've made three of the drinks so far and they have all been winners. One of the best things about the book is the author lists 7 types of rum and the recipes specify a type instead of a specific bottle which means the your home bar only needs 7 bottles of rum. Many cocktail books call for specific bottles which gets both expensive and unwieldy after awhile. The recipes aren't overly complicated which I appreciate as well. I have books from other famous bars and for some books, making one drink is a huge project. I look forward to working my way through more recipes. The text of book is fantastic as well. It gives a great account of the origins of tiki culture in the USA and how Smuggler's Cove came to be.

This is a beautiful book. I only got it today and just started reading it so this is a preliminary review but this is one of the best-looking, best-reading cocktail books I've picked up in a very long time. With photos and art on nearly every page, Martin Cate's writing is clear and entertaining. There are more than a hundred recipes throughout the chapters, along with well-written information about the history of the tiki culture; everything about rum and how it's made; making the drinks (extensive info here); setting up your own home bar and throwing a tiki party. This book is not only a delight to read but it would be an appropriate gift for the cocktail-lover in your life.

Everything you've ever wanted to know about tiki, tiki cocktails, and tiki bars, and more! Since leaving the SF Bay Area almost two years ago, I've missed the Smuggler's Cove drinks more than almost anything. Now I can make (most) of my favorites at home!! There are even recipes for all the house-made syrups they use. The surprise ingredient in the Mai Tai Simple Syrup is a revelation! This book should be required reading for anyone who considers themselves tiki enthusiasts or craft bartenders. As a rum enthusiast, I am especially appreciative of the rum categorization system Martin has devised. It makes finding the right rum for a cocktail so much easier and clears up a lot of the confusion created by the existing "light rum, gold rum, dark rum" categories that make no sense at all!Even if you never make a single drink from this book, the writing style and the stories are entertaining and informative enough to have at least one copy on your shelf (I have one at home and one at the office).

I've been developing a liking for tiki cocktails lately, and this book is poised to turn that affinity into a full-blown addiction. The writing is clear and well-thought-out. The recipes give you all of the information you need and a lot of fascinating history in addition. Not only is this book a wonderful guide to making some of the most interesting libations the 20th century had to offer, but it's also a historical record of where Polynesian Pop originated and proliferated, until its untimely demise in the 70s and 80s. This book comes to us at a time when Tiki is undergoing a revival. And it makes me want to be a part of that!Fun, informative, useful, and might just lead to a full-blown addiction. Or at least a new hobby.

Wow-what an amazing book. The sad part is that it is pushing me back into the world of the Tiki. Ok, maybe not a bad thing. The Cate's love for Tiki is clearly evident, and unlike a good fishing hole, they are willing to share all with whoever glances into these pages. I'm hooked. Just the info on rum was worth the price of the book...but there is much more including; well written sections on the history of the tiki culture, how to create your own tiki bar, throwing a tiki party, etc. All interspearsed with tons of great exotic drink recipes. I look forward to visiting their restaurant and plan to check out all the old and new tiki bars in between. Thanks Martin and Rebecca. Job well done.

I was able to attend one of Mark's Certified Scrum Master classes through his company, Platinum Edge, and it was such a great course I had to buy this Scrum for Dummies book to follow. Similar to Mark's in-person teaching style, this book was extremely informative and easy to understand. I also bought Agile Project Management for Dummies and am excited to read that too.

Layton tends to oversell Scrum, but Scrum is a good system so read the book for the clear explanation and take Layton's cheerleading with a grain of salt. Sometimes Layton seems like Scrum is his new found religion. Yet he does provide a good overview so you should be able to implement Scrum skills after reading this book.

I can easily find the information I'm looking for as the company I work for is embracing Agile and Scrum methods and techniques more and more!

Most Dummies books are good but this one refers to templates that can be downloaded from their web site. Apparently the only way you get access is if you buy it from THEIR web site at a higher price. Also, once you hit the web site you can never un-register and you get a barrage of email ads. The product line has fallen significantly from their earlier glory.

The book's content is not very much for beginners, but is written in a very easy-to-read manner.
