The book is rather useful. It contains descriptions of how to implement many specific and commonly used techniques in 3D engine programming. Unfortunately (and this is the case with almost all books as of writing), it is somewhat outdated. For example, he GLSL tutorial sections used outdated keywords like gl_ModelViewProjectionMatrix, and the book may occasionally reference OpenGL projection and modelview matrix operations that are now deprecated. The reader may want to check to see if certain features the book talks about are deprecated. However, this book's slight outdatedness does not render it obsolete. The techniques described within are very useful, and much of the deprecated code is easily portable to the newer standards. In fact, most computers don't even support the newer standards yet. And because much of this book describes techniques rather than discussing their specific code implementations, it should be useful for a long time to come.

I'm rating this 2 stars primarily because of the incomplete nature of the project. It's not just that the code samples won't compile, or are so disorganized as to be nearly worthless. Much more irritating are the constant references to code samples that simply don't exist. Time and again the author(s) refer to sample programs that can be 'downloaded from the books web site'. These programs do not exist. The authors lame explanations for the lack of a CD (cost, etc) lose all credibility when one comes to the realization that the likely reason a CD doesn't exist is because the vast majority of the sample programs referred to in the text don't exist, either. Any hope that new code samples my someday appear on the book site seems futile as well - the site hasn't been updated in a year and a half. One is left with the feeling that this is clearly a project that was shipped when only partially completed. I feel ripped off; taken advantage of.On the plus side, portions of the book are well written and informative. It is, in spite of it's shortcomings, one of the better books I've found for explaining a variety of GL techniques commonly used in games. It's a shame it doesn't live up to it's promise; if the authors had been a little more diligent in completing the project before publishing it, it could have been a world-beater. Instead it's just another slightly below average disappointment.I also have a real problem with the fact that the author is writing reviews (typically 4 star ratings) for books that his own organisation is involved in publishing. If that isn't a conflict of interest I don't know what is. I feel Amazon compromises their credibility by allowing clearly non-objective 'reviews' to be listed with the books. If the author wants to write a little blurb, thats fine, but don't let them rate products they have a financial interest in.

Some of the stuff in this book is redundant in a sense that language specs and extensions spec are already available online then why put in there.Second, I found the explanation more like notes+spec form. Not at all for an newbie person and for an expert it does not offer anything new. As it starts with FBO, RenderTarget, PBOs etc. many things have changed over the period, including GLSL specs.Book structure is also quite confusing to me, it starts with some concepts of advance OpenGL(!) and then it is more like ShaderXn series with appendix and last chapeters full of GLSL and ARB specs.Buy this book if you know what you are looking for, check appendix first.

This book is dated, but it does still cover some really interesting topics. I picked it up for almost free. I wouldn't pay more than 5$ for this book.

I currently am taking advanced graphics courses in college, and this book has managed to match pound-for-pound the amount of graphics techniques covered in advanced courses. This book is definitely designed with the serious programmer aimed at professional-level work in mind, and it delivers generously.The book is structured as a series of articles of varying lengths addressing a large number of advanced topics in graphics. It starts with giving better methods to store and pass data around than in the previous volume, which can be applied to all of the techniques thereafter. A few small articles about mildly interesting topics serve as appetizers to the main course: shaders. The author clearly recognizes the importance of shaders and spends a fitting amount of time discussing them. The examples start out simple and demonstrate practical uses of shaders, making sure the reader comes out of these large chapters with a working knowledge of what shaders are for and how to use them.With shaders mastered, the rest of the book dives into a feast of useful graphics techniques and tricks. It effectively covers the various solutions available to common graphical goals and effectively conveys when they can and can't be used, their costs and benefits, and other important information that not only helps implement but also helps the reader decide when to use each technique for the best effect.Don't underestimate this book; it is massive as well as meaty. If you are passionate about computer graphics you won't be able to skip a page. If you're a professional, this book is full of valuable reference material and details about implementing the latest innovations in graphics. This book doesn't have a place on my bookshelf; it has a place on my desk.That said, the only thing that is badly lacking is the source code. The book does not come with a CD, but rather allows the reader to download source code from the author's website. The included examples are fairly well-constructed, but the code base is incomplete. Most depressingly, the source code for the shader wrapper - which the author uses in most of the code examples for shaders - is not available currently. While having the interface design is nice, it does require that the reader implement it in order to directly copy the code examples from the book, which might feel tedious when one is anxious to actually start messing around with shaders. However don't think that the source code is totally useless; there's a good deal of useful source on the web site to sift through.The complaints out of the way I must reiterate that this is the best graphics book I have seen available and was worth not only every penny but more. I strongly recommend "More OpenGL Game Programming" to to student who's looking to take amateur graphics programming to the professional level or the professional looking for a good resource for the latest graphics techniques used in games today.

Sadly, this autobiographical book is still relevant today. I don’t want to believe that 50 years have seen so little progress in race relations, and that white Americans are still woefully ignorant of both the history and the current realities. Read this book and see.

I have long known of the atrocities that occurred in the U.S. During the Civil Rights Movement. This book, told by a white woman who lived through it, gave me new insights and a different perspective on the subject. There was so much I did not know. I often feel overwhelmed by the issues of race and diversity; Lois Stalvey showed me that one person can make a difference. I highly recommend this book.

I loved this book since the first page. I have learned a lot about black history. The book has a lot of emotions that get you hooked and make you want to keep reading.

This is the best book about race I have ever read written by a white person. Stalvey's memoir of her personal relationships with black people during the 1960's when our country was finally beginning to come to terms with its deep-seated racism is both inspiring and enlightening. Not only does she discuss race, she delves into other kinds of prejudice and how important it is for each of us to examine where our prejudices come from if we are ever to move beyond them. I recommend this book to anyone who doesn't think we have a race problem in this country, for even though decades have passed since its initial publication, we still have a long way to go to resolve the schism racism has cut into our national psyche.

Great book really puts race relations in this country into perspective in a non-offensive way. I great peeks behind the scened of some historical figures. Sadly, in 2014 we are still facing similar issues and this is a good start fr teaching our generation about "WASPs"

My adoptive mother was assigned this book by the social worker that did their home study. Why a social worker would assign a book about the civil rights movement in America to a couple adopting a child from S. Korea is beyond me! Evidently it is an indicator of their ineptitude along with my miserable childhood with abusive AP's. However, I did enjoy the book and my education since I do align myself with the WASP mentality.

I got this book to help my nieces who are in their junior and senior year of high school. I was looking for a book that not only gave questions and answers, but also gave test-taking tips for the test. The SAT is a beast of a test and you have to be able to understand that what you know is important, but knowing how to test with that knowledge is just as important. Well pretty much that is how this book works. It has an abundance of test questions, but also provides tips on how to study and how to take the test. I highly recommend. I wish I would have gotten it early so they would have had it a few more months before the test. My nieces say the best part is the flow of the book, its simple and easy to use.

This is a very good literature study guide that's very easy to follow. It has test prep and practice test questions with the answers for the college board SAT as well as the literature subject test. I highly recommend this study guide for anyone that's needing to focus on literature for their SAT!!

This is the second book I have read by Ann Patchett. (The first was "Commonwealth.") I sense a writer's "trick" in these two that she uses magnificently. In both books, we have perfectly ordinary people living perfectly ordinary lives. And then (insert the golden Plot Key and twist slightly) something happens that is not perfectly ordinary and changes their lives. This happens in the first few pages of the book. And then we share in the experience of these perfectly ordinary people as they deal with something they never imagined--and the implications and effects it has on those they love. And when I say "experience," I mean that. Ann Patchett fully draws the reader into the book. The stories are not scary or filled with terror (remember, the "perfectly ordinary" descriptions above), but the story will haunt you.The basic plot of "State of Wonder": In the first sentence we learn that Dr. Anders Eckman is dead. Anders had traveled deep into the Amazon at the behest of his employer, a Minneapolis-based pharmaceutical company that has a researcher working at a secret site on a secret drug that will revolutionize the world. But the researcher is incommunicado. Anders was sent to investigate. And then tragedy strikes. With few details about his death and no body (he was hastily buried in the jungle), Dr. Marina Singh, Anders's officemate, is sent to the Amazon to find out what happened to this married father of three young boys. And so begins a state of wonder in which the reader will be carried with descriptions so vivid that it's easy to envision the chaos and blistering heat of the jungle and almost hear the squawking birds and screeching creatures that inhabit it. Marina's perfectly ordinary life has been upended and will never be perfectly ordinary again.But the book is so much more than plot--no matter how riveting and engrossing. It is also about people, our connections, the choices we make and the effects those choices have on us and others.

Very well-written book. Both not what I was expecting, and far more than I was expecting.I expected a book about exploring the Amazon. The first half of the book was all about the main character, a doctor and scientist, and her work and personal relationships in Minnesota. By the time she flies to Manaus to look for a lost colleague, one is already half-way through the book.Eventually, the person she is waiting for in Manaus shows up, and she follows them into the jungle. From here, her experiences are so different from what I would have expected, yet interesting and profound. I really enjoyed stepping into this woman's shoes and experiencing everything she experienced. It's like adventure travel, combined with science and moral dilemmas, and calls for bravery in multiple situations. To my surprise, the book winds up with a very satisfying ending.

I loved the writing in this novel. The author is so technically excellent in weaving in flashbacks, memories, dreams and the physical world. I loved the descriptions of the Amazon, an area I will probably never visit but one that came to life in A. Patchett's prose. She took me on the archetypal journey of the protagonist/heroine who strikes out on a search and succeeds in bringing back the Holy Grail (Anders). However, I do think that the author seems to have painted herself into a corner when we get to the end of the book. The author painstakingly takes us on the journey from Marina reluctantly considering beginning her quest to her coming to terms to the society that she has entered to the actions she takes in the end. Nothing prepared me for the sudden and not-quite-believable ending given the totality of the book. Still, there is much to delight in the wonderful prose and the often startling imagery of this novel.

This was my first Ann Patchett book - an author that had been recommended to me by a few people. It started off a bit slow with too much dialogue and preamble before the book took off in an interesting direction. About half way through, I realised that I was quite enjoying this book and it almost became a page turner. The language was good, the characters interesting and the story somewhat fascinating - albeit in no way believable. Ultimately the ending, which leaves you guessing, was just right especially in the context of a story which could in no way be true. I wouldn't recommend this to those who are interested in realism but if you can suspend disbelief and like a good story then you will enjoy the book. I will ponder the question of what happens next - however as much as I would like to fill in the blanks it is part of what makes the overall book good.I would give this book 4 1/2 stars if I could. I will definitely read another one by this author

The book turned quite weird at the end. The characters were not very likable or interesting. I'm also not sure what the title had to do with the book. Some of the tribal oddities were annoying and a bit condescending. If a tribe is known to steal all a person's clothes, why not warn people to hang on to their suitcases instead of just having them leave them unguarded? The plot was mildly interesting, but the ending was disappointing. It seemed like the book was trying to make a point about drug research, pharmaceutical companies, etc., but the plot was so odd that the meaning was lost. Other books I've read by her have been better than this one.

The title fits the book as I was in a state of wonder as I read it. The story deals with science professors and doctors/pharmacologists giving up their lives at home to work on a fertility drug way out in the Amazon jungle. One doctor is missing and presumed dead from Malaria. Meanwhile another doctor, a woman named Marina is sent out there to find out what happened to Dr.Anders and what is going on with the research. What transpires next is an ongoing adventure that keeps you reading and not wanting to put down the book. I thoroughly enjoyed I and recommend it highly. I never would have read this book on my own but it was our May book group book choice. I thank them for that.

Pretty pleased with this set overall so far. My only complaint is that in the accompanying book, the dialogues are very complex right from the get-go and get progressively more so fast. And the English translation is not printed line-for line-beneath the Irish. The English translation comes after the Irish dialogue, which often means a lot of page turning to keep track. And even when not turning pages, it is not easy to match. More of a drill at times would be nice, too. However, the intracies of the language, including grammar and pronunciation, are well explained, and that is much needed, as Irish is unlike many Europeans languages in many respects. The book is also well thought-out mostly, very readable and accessible, and the CDs very clear. I think if you want to learn Irish, this would be a good addition to your learning curriculum. You might like to include other sets as well, though. But I would always suggest MORE when learning a language. Think of how much work you put into learning English as a child.Erin go bragh!

I started learning Irish on Duolingo and this is a great supplement to that. Duolingo doesn't always have audio for Irish and I bought this because it's obviously helpful to hear how the words are pronounced.

This is one of the only teach yourself Irish sets I've found that has traditional methods for learning: grammar, aural practice, verbal practice, exercises, vocabulary, cultural notes -- none of this "learn by hearing only and mind-numbing repetition" nonsense which leaves you totally unable to read the language. Irish Gaelic is (if nothing else) quixotic when it comes to pronunciation & spelling, so to see how the word is spelled vs. how it is pronounced is vitally important. Tá sé seo fiú a cheannach.

I found Gaelic study difficult and slow going--it just doesn't sound like it spells! With an auditory component, this package seems to present the tools you need for an effective study. Just allow plenty of time and patience.

I have to confess that I'm not that far in the course, but I am very familiar with the Living Language approach, as I have the Japanese, Russian, Polish, Korean, and Chinese courses as well. That having been said, the thing I like the most about this course is the audio. Other courses are more about reading AND listening, and rarely have just audio exersises. they may have a few here and there, but they do not have the amount that Living Language offers. And I believe that you need to have sufficient audio only exposure in order to understand people when they speak to you. Overall the book is a great start in the language too. The grammar notes are short, but clear and concise. The vocabulary is practical and up-to-date. The exercises are easy and yet good for the topics covered in the lessons. the only complaint I have is that there are no vocabulary lists for the 'readings' given in most lessons. You are expected to look up any unknown words you want to know. In the Korean textbook the readings have a vocabulary list (be it smaller then the main list), but this is the only complaint I have. And all you have to do is look up a word here or there per lesson really. Also, this book does not lend it self to one particular dialect like most Irish textbooks. Instead it teaches you the Official Standard used in Ireland, which is based on all three major dialects (Ulster, Connacht, and Munster). Thus this book is good for getting a good grasp on Irish, and while not being as comprehensive as the Japanese, Russian or Chinese courses, it is still good for a beginner. And Best thing is you can go on and learn any dialect you would like and take your Irish further!

Having audio paired with most of the words and phrases in the lessons is very helpful in learning pronunciation. The grammar sections are the best I've seen so far. They actually do a good job of explaining the syntax, grammar, and conjugations. Most other materials usually avoid this and try to teach the student by imitation alone, with a note that if you actually want to understand the grammar, you should go read a book on it.However, I was disappointed with the limited material in each chapter. The reading exercise and practice exercises are almost verbatim the same things that were said in the dialogue exercise. They essentially took the dialogue exercise and rewrote it into sentences where you fill in the blanks, and then again into a paragraph that you read. There are a lot of other words that are introduced in the example sentences in the grammar sections, but you never have an opportunity to practice them or hear them more than once, so your functional vocabulary at the end of a chapter is limited to about 20 words out of the 40 they actually gave you.The book is smaller than I was expecting - about the size of a novel, not a conventional text book. It should be expanded to include a lot more practice and reading exercises with a wider vocabulary and more varied sentences that actually challenge the student's comprehension - not just their ability to copy a couple words from the dialogue transcription.

It goes a little fast ... but it's thorough. I'm on my old Buntus Cainte book, Duolingo and this. I'm covered.

I grew up in Memphis, and spent many years as a youngster working for my Dad's construction business. We worked all over Memphis, and so I drove past many of these signs for years.One of my earliest memories is looking out the window of my parents' Volvo and seeing "Sputnik", a very memorable version of a type of sign called a "rotosphere" (as the authors inform us). I was mesmerized by this sign as a child, but it was broken in those early memories--it didn't spin or light up back then. Only many years later did I see it post-restoration--and what a sight! Learning how it actually works and what it took to restore it was very interesting--although I found myself longing for more technical detail on that one point!All of that to say that I looked forward to reading this book because I have many of my own memories associated with a lot of these signs. I drove by the giant skate and the "Roller Skate for Health" sign for years, and my mom bought stamps from Advance Rubber Stamp for the family business. So I knew my history with a lot of these prominent landmarks, but I didn't know the history of each one. This book educated me on the history and origins of these distinctive signs, and more than just relating the manufacturer and original purchaser, the book tells about the people, era, and neighborhood that go along with each one.The style of writing is akin to a feature piece in a newspaper, with a section, or chapter, for each sign. Each section can stand on its own, which makes this the kind of book you can read in spurts rather than in one committed study. It is not the dry narrative of the historian; it is more like walking into a conversation between a group of old timers who really know the history of their home town.However, and perhaps simply due to the fact that this is written and not spoken, the book lacks some of the magic of a real conversation. Like the reporting you would read in a newspaper, the author is somewhat detached from the subject matter. That may be because the text is often moving from one quotation to the next without a real binding narrative for any one sign, or for the book as a whole. That is the only reason I give this four stars instead of five--I think the writing could be more engaging.But that is a slight tarnish on an otherwise shining example of local history. This book adds color to Memphis and its history you won't find in many other places. The paintings and photographs of each landmark really help tell the story (in fact I found myself wishing for more photos showing different angles and eras for each sign). I hope if you end up with a copy of this book that you enjoy it as I did--and maybe even start looking around your own home town a little closer for gems like these in Memphis.

For lovers of all things Memphis, this fantastic book will give readers insight into the fascinating hidden histories behind some of the city's most legendary landmarks. The artist did a beautiful job of illustrating these famous signs that adorn places like The Beauty Shop and Joe's Wine and Liquor, while Mrs. Horton masterfully weaves together all of the interesting historical facts that take readers on a journey back in time through Memphis history. I was excited, yet anxious, about this book being published. At the age of 63 and being a native memphian, I was hoping the author, Caitlin Horton, would be able to capture the true renaissance of this great city of Memphis. She did not disappoint! I love it! This book has captured not only historical topic, but all of the fun, beauty and incredible artistic talent that has ALWAYS been the heartbeat of Memphis. Rebecca Phillips is a perfect example of this talent through the paintings of signs illustrated in the book. Through the author and artist, you can't help but be drawn-in to the creative spirit of this great city! If you're not from Memphis, or have never visited, you'll be planning a trip soon! I would highly recommend this book to young and old!

We are proud to add this eye-catching book about Memphis TN and its colorful past to our 'what's amazing about Memphis', library. While each chapter is beautifully illustrated and well researched, my favorite two sections are on Soulsville, because of the heartbreaking and then triumphant historical background given in that piece, and the Spinning Lights Of Joe's Wines And Liquors. I love the art in the Joe's Liquor chapter and I also live near Joe's Liquor and see the spinning lights frequently. As a Californian, Memphis Type History has given me a new look at old Memphis and taught me to appreciate more and more the tremendous and colorful history that Memphis holds for us all.

Memphis Type History offers the reader a pictorial and biographical tour of Memphis Landmarks. The artwork draws the readers attention and the personal stories keep you turning the pages. It is so refreshing to be privileged to the real-life stories beyond the factual, historical research offered in other publications. To take a glimpse back to what once was makes my town even more endearing. Memphis Type History now has my family and me looking at our city from a different perspective. Not only has our appreciation for the past chronicled in the book expanded, but also we are finding ourselves on our own scavenger hunt of sorts to find the stories behind the signs and buildings we have looked at everyday, but not truly seen.

Having lived in Memphis for about 5 years, I was pretty familiar with the signs and some of their history, so most of the details in the book resonated with me and in some cases triggered memories long dormant. What is special about this book is that it creates a meaningful cultural and emotional context that both supplements and enhances the beautiful artwork. Whether you have ever lived in Memphis or you are merely familiar with the area (or you are just a vintage sign fan), you cannot help but be touched by some of the narratives associated with these iconic signs.

As someone born and raised in Memphis, I have missed so much as to what this city is about, including history, politics, major companies, and revolutions that have happened in this great city. Maybe I couldn't see the forest for the trees, but this great city is rife with so much culture and interesting things that most people don't know.This book definitely helps to bring it into focus. It goes through so much of the history (known by most and known by very few) to shed a new light on the city. It's such an intriguing read and I highly recommend it.
