This is a must read book. Most people really do not understand how hard it is to keep their money safe. Many of the threats to money are almost invisible, nibbling here and there. But by the magic of compounding, these "tiny" nibbles can cut your money in half over time. e.g., a 2% inflation (what the Fed calls "no inflation") will cut your money in half in 36 years. So if you're 50 and live to be 86, you will live your last year on half the money you have now. Just a tiny 1% increase in the sales tax? Over time, it will impoverish you if your money doesn't grow more than 1%.Loeb travelled the world as part of his investment business. He saw everything-- earthquakes, wars, revolutions, ravening inflations. People fleeing with all they could rescue of their lifetime savings on their backs. This led him to a great insight: There is no way to keep money safe from all the threats to it. The only way to keep your money "safe" is to grow it faster than it is nibbled away. So this book is about how to grow your money.This book was first written a long time ago, but the lessons are still important. These are things most people don't know and most investment books don't cover. In fact, a lot of the standard investment advice-- the kind a "financial advisor" will be swarming you with-- will not grow your money and will not keep it safe from all the tiny, invisible erosions.Please, read this book and think it all thru again. Do you really want to have all your money in a residence and rental property in earthquake and tornado country the way one hard saver I know does? Do you want to have 5 typed pages of load mutual funds to be properly "diversified" the way my sister did when she died? Do you want to keep your money "safe" in bonds now that you're retired the way my doctor is being advised to do? Do you really want to vote for that sales tax increase that's "only" 1% the way my aunt did?

The Battle for Investment Survival is referenced in The Zurich Axioms, an excellent book I read earlier. As such I was curious to read it. This is a second edition of this book that was published in 1957. I don't know when the first edition was written. The author is a 35 years, seasoned, stock broker who lays out his experience and advice in this book. It is broken down to 96 short chapters, followed by (in the second edition) notes and lectures that the author made after writing this book. I liked it for the useful and interesting information, some of it contrary to main stream investment status quo. I felt at times that some of it could be cut a little shorter to convey the same idea. I, personally, had somewhat of a hard time with the language or writing style of the author. It might be the style of writing at the time or just his own style, I don't know which. He is using long run-on sentences that are becoming hard to follow sometimes. Also, the use of terms in ways that are not used in present day, had me stop and re-read and think before I could continue. All on its own it is not a bad thing except for slowing me down. I don't feel that this book taught me anything ground breaking but I'm very pleased for having read it. Some of my favorite quotes:"There is no line of endeavor in the world where real knowledge will pay as rich or as quick a monetary reward as Wall Street.""There are three ways of making money. One is to sell your time. The second is to lend your money. The third is to risk your money."And my favorite of them all:"people who invest money for others have legal and moral responsibilities which often hinder the use of investment practices most likely to succeed."

This is a book that will increase your understanding of the world of money and what you have to do to protect your future. Loeb travelled all over the world and saw *everything*-- war, revolution, economic collapse, earthquakes, inflation, starvation, people losing everything, fleeing for their lives. He also lived a long time and saw many changes in US laws and taxation. His basic point is that money is never safe. Never. You think you can keep it safe in a bank, or under a mattress, or in government bonds, but even when it is not being outright confiscated or stolen, the purchasing power it is supposed to preserve is being constantly chipped away by inflation, taxation, regulation.In his view, the only way to keep money safe is to invest it in a way that will return enough to make up for what is eroded and chipped away. Liquidity matters. Don't have it all in one location-- i.e. don't have a lot in real estate in the same location you have your business in. e.g. California before the real estate bust and economic crash.I happen to believe his investment style is correct: don't invest it all, be very selective about your buys, have only a few A+ ideas, and watch them carefully. When opportunity presents, go after it 100%. Keep losses small.But even if you don't agree with everything Loeb says, this book is full of investment *wisdom*, and it will increase your wisdom enough so you will recognize and avoid the "advisor" who comes at you slinging jargon and investment "facts" hoping to fool you into thinking he knows anything.

I recently downloaded "The Battle for Investment Survival" into Kindle.I had first read this book at an Army post in 1969.I read it and reread it many times to get the major points by G.M Loeb.It opened my eyes to the most common sense, intelligent adviceabout the stock market that has followed me through today.to quote the book:"It is absolutely futile to get results except to buying into anticipatedlarge gains. It is far better to let cash set idle than to invest just tokeep invested or for income. It fact it is really vital ........ one of thewidest differences between the successful professional and theloss taking amateur."I believe this book offers the best investment advice a 72 year oldhas ever read.

The illustrations in this book are drawings of real life flowers, but they also look like other things. The author/illustrator has asked children to imagine the flowers as a parrot in flight, purses with flaps, fluttering bats, etc. They're almost like optical illusions.The text is simple, and the colors in the drawings are vivid. It's almost laid out like a board book. The ARC was incomplete, so I couldn't get the full feel of the book, but I would guess it will appeal to children between ages 2-4.The ARC did not contain much of the promised end notes either, but there were full color photos of the actual flowers, and Stockdale has done a terrific job of reproducing their likenesses in her illustrations. Learning to see involves looking closely and learning the language to describe what is right before our eyes. Fantastic Flowers is a perfect introduction for budding gardeners to explore the blooms in the flower beds of the world. Susan Stockdale’s beautiful illustration of the shapes of flowers that look like upside down pants, prim ballerinas, or wild baboons introduces early readers to an imaginative view of nature. A flower is not just a flower but can be compared to the shapes of other known objects. A hybrid Osteospermum spirals out in the shape of spoons, the hybrid Calceolaria represents a purse with a flap. Teaching children to name what they see helps them remember and will spark their curiosity to look more closely at the beauty of the world.Just as the reader reaches the end of the colorful illustrations, Stockdale delivers the scientific and common names of the flowers complete with photographs for the fancifully illustrated flowers in the first section of the book. This is when the beginning reader could benefit from a lap of an experienced gardener. Flowers that look like ballerinas? Baboons? A swaddled baby? Strangely enough it's all true and Susan Stockdale highlights seventeen flowers that look an awful lot like something else. It reminds me a bit of the cloud game, where you try to see things in the clouds, except with flowers. This is a great book to use to introduce children to plants and the amazing variety and the strange characteristics of flowers. In addition, Stockdale also gives a brief overview of pollination. Photographs are included at the end along with the official names, scientific names, and pollinators for each plant. A great book for teaching or just a fun introduction to amazing nature.

As a sci-fi and dystopian fan, I was intrigued enough to buy the first book in this series. It's ridiculous, but I am admittedly squeamish and easily terrified by horror stories, zombies, and the like. This two-part story was at the very edge of what I can tolerate regarding gore and horror. I KNOW that I would NEVER be able to watch a film adaptation, and honestly hope that Gregg Hurwitz's work won't be bastardized by Hollywood.However, I stuck with the series and have thoroughly enjoyed the character development, especially of the two brothers' relationship, but also of the supporting characters and Chance's Rhodesian Ridgebacks. I became emotionally invested in the characters, genuinely caring what would become of them, and was even moved to tears a few times. The action is intense and although I do not flinch at violence, some of the description of the gore was almost more than I could take. Having said that, the gore was purposeful and not gratuitous, and I already admitted my squeamishness.My one criticism has to do with continuity in the setting. Gregg Hurwitz intentionally does not state what state the brothers live in, but does give clues through the description of the climate and terrain. Even with the intentional withholding of a specific setting, some details do not make sense. For example, there is a scene following Thanksgiving when one moment "their footsteps are crunching on the dry leaves," but then all of a sudden an accumulation of snow is mentioned and although it's the same day, same few minutes, the environment has changed completely. A little later in mid-December, Chance describes the hot wind on his face, but they are less than 100 miles from the main setting, which is close to a mountain range. Now, I've lived literally coast to coast, including middle states like Colorado and Oklahoma, and I know how drastically the weather can change in a lot of places, especially in the middle of the country. These incongruities were just enough jarring to me, though, without any explanation, that it pulled me from the story. Trust me, this is not a criticism of the author, but more of his beta readers and editor(s).All in all, it is a great read and one that I can easily pitch to my students who enjoy action/dystopic stories. The book contains some beautiful examples of writer's craft and I appreciate that.

Amazing sequel to The Rains! This is a must-read for anyone who enjoys dystopian type books.To be honest, when I read reviews about aliens, I was skeptical because that isn't something I enjoy, but it was not the driving force in the book. The plot centers around two brothers and their love for each other and for humanity. It is a book that dystopian fanatics will not be able to put down.Delivery and shipment were perfect.All you need is this book, a nice cup of coffee, a comfortable place to lounge, and time to read because you won't be able to put it down.

This a great apocalyptic story! I liked the author’s writing style. He kept me in suspense and wonder the whole time. It’s definitely a tear jerker!

It’s my new favorite book. It’s so suspenseful and the author is incredible. Really opens your eyes! Even though it is a fictional book, the story behind it is insane!

I bought this mainly for the agents' listing, of which there are very few. There are maybe a couple dozen that take fiction, and some of those aren't even Christian agents, so what are they doing in this book? By contrast, Writers' Market for Agents lists hundreds of agents. I threw my money away with this one, and cannot recommend it. Judging by it's sales rank, it isn't selling very well anyway. Full disclosure: I did send a proposal to Steve Laube, author of the book, and his assistant wrote me a polite rejection letter. The assistant was kind enough to answer my follow up letter as well. Anyway, if it's an agent you're after, save your dough and do a little digging with Mr. Google and you'll find a lot more people who represent Christian novels. A final gripe: as I worked my way through these agents, I had to go to their web sites to learn the details of the submission process. Therefore, for me, this guide only supplied names, all of which I could have found on the internet.

Over the years, I have purchased the paper back version of this title and been extremely happy with it. I found the Kindle version very difficult to use when looking for specific markets and impossible to copy and paste info so that I could use it as a reference while I was actually writing. When I decided to return it and wait for the paperback publication of this title for 2019, which isn't available yet, there was no provision for returning it.

Was hoping this edition would be better than previous but it's about the same. Most entries were harvested from previous issues and there weren't many Catholic publishers listed. The Support for Writers section is large if that is what you are looking for. Will not buy this again.

Great help for what I needed, wanted devotional writing info and it was exactly what I needed so very pleased

I have one from 2015. Used it then and backed off for other projects. Now I bought it again and am using it and finding great help. It helps me narrow my focus on where I want to major.

The author has a great deal of information regarding the publishing/agency world and it really is worth every dime.

The Very True story that inspired William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist. which is way scarier then Blatty's book or the 1974 movie. It prove that truth is not only stranger then fiction but way scarier as well. It tell the story of a boy not a girl who became possessed during the 19440's after trying to contact his favorite aunt using what else The Ouija Board. The book gives insight into the Catholic practices of The Right of Exorcism and just why it isn't for the Novice and not anyone except for a trained expert is meant to do it. I highly recommend this. and if your a fan of The Exorcist you'll love this insightful story. I also recommend it to any Christin who wants to learn more about the ongoing fight between God and the Devil.

As a Roman Catholic, the subject is interesting and the author goes into much detail about the actual "Robbie Mannheim" (alias) case that started outside Wash DC and ended in St Louis. The amount of priests involved and the secrecy kept was politically motivated as the 'modern' church did not want to appear to be going back to medieval times, although those are its roots. This account was so frightening that I could not read it at night, I wound up reading it during daylight. I was surprised at some details, such as the Society of Jesus (Jesuit order) where it takes 15 yrs. to complete fully the training of a Jesuit. They are the scholastic and theological foot soldiers of the church with a rigorous training agenda. Most of the priest involved were Jesuits as well as protestant ministers. The first priest to attempt an exorcism received over 100 stitches from his shoulder to his wrist from a bed spring the boy tore loose during the opening rites. He was never the same mentally after that it seems, having stared into the face of raw evil

Since reading I have the impression that I might be the only St. Louis U. grad. not to know about the case until now, (2014). gives the general reader a good elementary education about diabolic possession from more than one point of view. The book is easy to read and entertaining. I especially recommend it to readers unacquainted with human possession by the Devil or whatever else the phenomenon might be.

Thomas Allen has made a career out of investigating the 1940s exorcism of a 15-year old Lutheran boy in St. Louis. That exorcism, conducted by Jesuit priests from St. Louis University with the permission of the Catholic archdiocese, formed the basis for William Peter Blatty's fictionalized book and film titled "The Exorcist." This book contains the fruits of Allen's investigation into the case, which hit U.S. newspapers in 1948 after the Lutheran pastor told the press about what had happened. It's a readable and gripping volume written in an informal style that makes it hard to put down.As it says on the book cover, Showtime aired a cable TV dramatization of this book with the same title in 2000, starring Timothy Dalton as the lead priest. Allen also appears in many documentaries about this case, most effectively the 1990s documentary titled "In the Grip of Evil." If you are fascinated by the phenomenon of exorcism and you want a relatively sober account, this paperback is a good starting point.

Undeniably the best and only accessible account from which William Peter Blatty used as a basis for his bestseller, The Exorcist. No. But I'd dare the reader to change places with the priests or others who witnessed this account with their own eyes and ears, and remain skeptical.

My favorite movie since I can remember has been The Exorcist, so I have a lot of interest in anything having to do with that story or exorcism in general. I read William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist a couple of years ago, and I wasn't disappointed but not necessarily impressed either (the movie is so in-your-face that it's hard to "top" it, for me). Since that book is based off of the experience described in this novel, I decided to give it a try. I thought it was presented in a very careful, restrained way which was really nice. I think anyone who has an interest in The Exorcist (the book or the movie) or in exorcisms in general would most likely find this to be a worthwhile read.
