I bought this mainly for the agents' listing, of which there are very few. There are maybe a couple dozen that take fiction, and some of those aren't even Christian agents, so what are they doing in this book? By contrast, Writers' Market for Agents lists hundreds of agents. I threw my money away with this one, and cannot recommend it. Judging by it's sales rank, it isn't selling very well anyway. Full disclosure: I did send a proposal to Steve Laube, author of the book, and his assistant wrote me a polite rejection letter. The assistant was kind enough to answer my follow up letter as well. Anyway, if it's an agent you're after, save your dough and do a little digging with Mr. Google and you'll find a lot more people who represent Christian novels. A final gripe: as I worked my way through these agents, I had to go to their web sites to learn the details of the submission process. Therefore, for me, this guide only supplied names, all of which I could have found on the internet.

Over the years, I have purchased the paper back version of this title and been extremely happy with it. I found the Kindle version very difficult to use when looking for specific markets and impossible to copy and paste info so that I could use it as a reference while I was actually writing. When I decided to return it and wait for the paperback publication of this title for 2019, which isn't available yet, there was no provision for returning it.

Was hoping this edition would be better than previous but it's about the same. Most entries were harvested from previous issues and there weren't many Catholic publishers listed. The Support for Writers section is large if that is what you are looking for. Will not buy this again.

Great help for what I needed, wanted devotional writing info and it was exactly what I needed so very pleased

I have one from 2015. Used it then and backed off for other projects. Now I bought it again and am using it and finding great help. It helps me narrow my focus on where I want to major.

The author has a great deal of information regarding the publishing/agency world and it really is worth every dime.

My mom loves the book and got a lot of useful information from it

The Very True story that inspired William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist. which is way scarier then Blatty's book or the 1974 movie. It prove that truth is not only stranger then fiction but way scarier as well. It tell the story of a boy not a girl who became possessed during the 19440's after trying to contact his favorite aunt using what else The Ouija Board. The book gives insight into the Catholic practices of The Right of Exorcism and just why it isn't for the Novice and not anyone except for a trained expert is meant to do it. I highly recommend this. and if your a fan of The Exorcist you'll love this insightful story. I also recommend it to any Christin who wants to learn more about the ongoing fight between God and the Devil.

As a Roman Catholic, the subject is interesting and the author goes into much detail about the actual "Robbie Mannheim" (alias) case that started outside Wash DC and ended in St Louis. The amount of priests involved and the secrecy kept was politically motivated as the 'modern' church did not want to appear to be going back to medieval times, although those are its roots. This account was so frightening that I could not read it at night, I wound up reading it during daylight. I was surprised at some details, such as the Society of Jesus (Jesuit order) where it takes 15 yrs. to complete fully the training of a Jesuit. They are the scholastic and theological foot soldiers of the church with a rigorous training agenda. Most of the priest involved were Jesuits as well as protestant ministers. The first priest to attempt an exorcism received over 100 stitches from his shoulder to his wrist from a bed spring the boy tore loose during the opening rites. He was never the same mentally after that it seems, having stared into the face of raw evil

The book is easy to read and entertaining. I especially recommend it to readers unacquainted with human possession by the Devil or whatever else the phenomenon might be.

Thomas Allen has made a career out of investigating the 1940s exorcism of a 15-year old Lutheran boy in St. Louis. That exorcism, conducted by Jesuit priests from St. Louis University with the permission of the Catholic archdiocese, formed the basis for William Peter Blatty's fictionalized book and film titled "The Exorcist." This book contains the fruits of Allen's investigation into the case, which hit U.S. newspapers in 1948 after the Lutheran pastor told the press about what had happened. It's a readable and gripping volume written in an informal style that makes it hard to put down.As it says on the book cover, Showtime aired a cable TV dramatization of this book with the same title in 2000, starring Timothy Dalton as the lead priest. Allen also appears in many documentaries about this case, most effectively the 1990s documentary titled "In the Grip of Evil." If you are fascinated by the phenomenon of exorcism and you want a relatively sober account, this paperback is a good starting point.

Undeniably the best and only accessible account from which William Peter Blatty used as a basis for his bestseller, The Exorcist. I would recommend reading this book if you are curious about the events and facts associated with "The Case". No. But I'd dare the reader to change places with the priests or others who witnessed this account with their own eyes and ears, and remain skeptical.

My favorite movie since I can remember has been The Exorcist, so I have a lot of interest in anything having to do with that story or exorcism in general. I read William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist a couple of years ago, and I wasn't disappointed but not necessarily impressed either (the movie is so in-your-face that it's hard to "top" it, for me). Since that book is based off of the experience described in this novel, I decided to give it a try. I thought it was presented in a very careful, restrained way which was really nice. I think anyone who has an interest in The Exorcist (the book or the movie) or in exorcisms in general would most likely find this to be a worthwhile read.

After having made my first successful batch of dill pickles a few months ago, browsing through this book of nearly innumerable pickling recipes was a fun romp. When author Jennifer MacKenzie says that pickling isn't that hard, she's right--it isn't. Especially not when you have over 250 recipes for traditionally picked and quick-pickled condiments, sauces, and sides in your hands! She's covered everything from lesser-known fruit pickles to classics like chili sauce and corn relish. My favorite section by far, though, is "World Traveler." I had heard of Moroccan preserved lemons and Korean kimchi (they're both delightful), but I hadn't known about Jamaican Banana Ginger Chutney or Indian Spiced Pickled Peaches. More intriguing yet are the recipes for domestic treats like Pickled Milkweed Pods (who knew?) and New Orleans Pickled Mirlitons (I knew chayote squash is sometimes called mirliton, but I didn't know they were ever pickled). This is such a great book for learning how to make many different, flavorful pickles, chutneys, salsas, and other flavor-packed recipes. Some cook book authors have an uncanny ability to over-complicate the technique, which can leave the reader feeling intimidated and confused. Jennifer MacKenzie has written this book in such a way that anyone can learn this old-age art form. Another thing I really like about the book is that not only does she provide weight measurements (e.g. 5 lbs.) in her ingredient lists, but also volume measurements (e.g. 4 quarts or 2 cups). This is extremely helpful. A must buy for pickling novices and masters.

I've used this book as an intro to making both pickles and homemade spaghetti sauce. The instructions are clear and the author has obviously put a lot of time and effort into fine tuning these recipes.

I love finding recipes that remind me of what my grandma used to make when I was a kid. The Limpa and Cardamom Braids are outstanding... still working on trying others :)

Holy Cow! Got this cookbook several weeks ago and just got around to making my first recipe, on page 84, the Swedish Tea Ring. This was a no-knead bread, 24 hours of letting the dough sit in the fridge, and baked today. My neighbor and I could hardly keep our hands off the finished product it was so darn good. As I made it I really wondered if it would be worth it having purchased the cardamon pods and was kicking myself while digging them out of their husks, grinding them etc. It provided the most terrific smells while baking and this was really so easy to do will definitely make this many times in the future! P.S. WOULD PROBABLY BUY MORE COOKBOOKS IF they would show their index or table of contents. I hate buying a cookbook blind only to find a repeat of recipes I already know ie. chocolate chip cookies. I mean really, how many of those recipes does one need to know?!!!

The Great Scandinavian Baking Book is something I wanted to add to my cookbook collection for two reasons: 1) I'm from Minnesota and my Mom and her side of the family are all of Norwegian descent. The thought that I could recreate some items from my Mom's childhood excited me. 2) I wanted a collection of baking recipes that yielded results appropriate for "company."Also I really like the flavor of cardamom :)This book served both purposes. I've made some great items with wonderful results. I'll be honest, some of them sounded quite difficult and I didn't have a lot of confidence in my abilities. I'm a great cook (if I do say so myself) but baking - following directions really - is not my forte. But Beatrice Ojakangas' instructions are so precise, yet natural that I got things right the first time.The first thing I made was an Icelandic coffee wreath. No, it's not Norweigan like my Mom. But it did make a great and beautiful pastry fit for serving at a holiday potluck at work. Everyone was impressed. It was so simple to make but it looked like a million bucks. That's the impression I want to make with my food at work, you know?Then I made Norweigian butter cookies. Oh my gosh. How can a 6 ingredient recipe turn out something so lovely and melt-in-your-mouth good?The real payoff was Crispy Krumkake. My Mom still has Grandma's Krumkake iron, but doesn't ever make the cookies because, well Mom is into lots of domestic arts, but cooking isn't one of them. So I gave Krumkake a shot and the recipe was fantastic. Light delicate cookies, made pretty by the iron's design, they were a hit! Unfortunately the German side of my family filled them with Cool Whip which made me cringe, but they liked it so I guess it's okay.So why did I remove a star? Well the book has this gorgeous photo on the cover but no photos inside. There are some line drawings where appropriate (like explaining how to slice and shape that coffee wreath), but no inspirational photos. And the book isn't bound so as to be very useful in the kitchen. It's a paperback that isn't heavy enough to stay open. Not that format is everything, but transcribing or photocopying recipes isn't my idea of a good time. Overall it is a minor thing, but still worthy of comment.If you like the flavors of cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, butter, almonds - you'll love this book whether you have a Scandinavian history or not.

This book is somewhat different than other cookbooks I have reviewed. There are no photos to assist with presentation, and the recipes are sparsely illustrated.The book is different from other Scandinavian cookbooks that I own as well in that they tend to omit insular areas, focusing exclusively on Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. This book covers Iceland as well. The recipes here also range from main dish mushroom pies to cookies, and from crackers and breads to cakes. The diversity in the cookbook is astounding in recipe types as well as geography.Instead of a photograph, each recipe includes a brief set of notes about how the recipe fits into the food culture where it comes from. In many ways, this is more helpful than a photograph anyway, as long as one has other cookbooks which have such photographs of Scandinavian foods and how they are decorated. (For those, I'd recommend: Authentic Norwegian Cooking and The Cooking of Scandinavia - Foods of the World Series.)Highly recommended.

This is one of my well loved cookbooks as you can bake almost anything from this cookbook. You will find recipes for breads, cakes, cookies and desserts from Scandinavia. Personally I enjoy bread baking so I usually bake the bread recipes from this book although I've baked plenty of cookies too. All have turned out well.Author Beatrice Ojakangas offers a bit of background of where the recipe came from and in some cases how the recipe was traditionally prepared.Some of the recipes you will find include:*Heart Shaped Cream Waffles*Sweet Cream Waffles*Alexander's Tarts*Danish Sugar Drops*Norwegian Coffee Buns*Danish Currant Buns*Swedish Chocolate-Frosted Almond Bars*Swedish Cinnamon Butterhorns*Finnish Blueberry SquaresHighly recommend.

So many recipe books to choose from; where do you start? Well, I started with reading the reviews here at Amazon, and this book got such high marks I ended up ordering it - and I have not been disappointed. I'm reading my way through the book right now - yes, it's a recipe book you can read (as opposed to many others which are fun to browse but can get a little repetitive) because of all the snippets of backstory and custom woven throughout. It adds so much for me to be able to find out not only how things were prepared, but when, and why. I also LOVE that there are recipes from all over Scandinavia - I, for one, have never made recipes from Iceland before - and if there are regional variations, we are told about them.In short - the reviewers here are not wrong, this is a wonderful book! The only thing that could have improved it would have been a few more pictures and/or diagrams - I like knowing how it's supposed to turn out - but this is not a flaw, just a 'wouldn't it be nice'.Highly recommended.
