Blaise Pascal was a 17th century mathematician and philosopher who decided to follow Christ with his whole heart. He did so not without careful consideration of the alternatives, and his logic in Pensées is reflected in what is commonly known as Pascal's wager. He reasons that either the God of the Bible is true, or there is no God. If the God of the Bible is true and trusting him with your life results in eternal life and heaven without evil forever, the benefits are obvious. If God is true, and you reject him, the results are eternal separation and hell. If God is false, believing in Him results in the temporal benefits of a life filled with purpose only to result in oblivion. If God is false, not believing in Him simply results in a meaningless life only to end in oblivion. Pascal points out that everyone must wager one of these choices, and for him wagering that God is real and living your life that way is infinitely better. Pensées is translated as "thoughts" and it was published after Pascal died. He intended to make them his life work, but never finished the project. It is laid out much like Proverbs and Ecclesiastes as short bullet points, and that was what his notes were like. The book was published in 1669. Also, ancient authors such as Livy, Cicero, Augustine, Horace, Josephus, Philo, Eusebius, Thomas Aquinas, etc. His goal is the persuade the reader of the divine inspiration of the Bible and that the Christian faith is the truth from GodHe presents Daniel's prophesy concerning the seventy weeks of years and the appearance of the messiah and the destruction of the temple as a proof of Jesus as the messiah and confirmation of Bible truth. Especially since as a mathematician he uses 'proof' as a fundamental tool in scientific discoveries. -"There are three sources of belief: reason, custom, inspiration. The Christian religion, which alone has reason, does not acknowledge as her true children those who believe without inspiration. It is not that she excludes reason and custom. On the contrary, the mind must be open to proofs, must be confirmed by custom, and offer itself in humbleness to inspirations, which alone can produce a true and saving effect." -Proof is a part of Christian belief but not all. Human belief is deeper than intellectual analysis.Pascal analyzes the interplay of external and internal devotion. . ."It is superstition to put one's hope in formalities; but it is pride to be unwilling to submit to them." Superstition meant foolishness or unfounded belief."The external must be joined to the internal to obtain anything from God, that is to say we must kneel, pray with the lips, etc., in order that proud man, who would not submit himself to God, may be now subject to the creature. To expect help from these externals his superstition; to refuse to join them to the internal is pride."Decarte seen as father of modern philosophy. Pascal met him and analyzed his work. Concludes -''I cannot forgive Descartes. In all his philosophy he would have been quite willing to dispense with God. But he had to make Him give a fillip to set the world in motion; beyond this, he has no further need of God.''Decarte laid bricks in the road to 'materialism' - no spiritual reality exists. Nevertheless -''The nature of man is wholly natural, omne animal.There is nothing he may not make natural; there is nothing natural he may not lose.''This use of paradoxical contrasts is a wonderful teaching tool! Felice Benuzzi was a junior officer in the Italian Colonial Service, stationed in Addis Ababa, when the British thwarted Mussolini's ambition to build a colonial empire in East Africa. Benuzzi, along with thousands of other Italians, was captured and interned in a POW camp near the foot of Mount Kenya, where he and his countrymen languished indefinitely, waiting out the war and the desperate boredom, passivity, and isolation of prison life. "In order to break the monotony," he writes, "one had only to start taking risks again." But the isolation of the camp precluded the possibility of escape to a neutral country: "I thought, then at least I shall stage a break in this awful travesty of life. I shall try to get out, climb Mount Kenya and return here." So begins No Picnic on Mount Kenya, a first-class adventure story full of courage, humor, and exquisite detail. Benuzzi and two fellow prisoners spent six months secretly hoarding food; sewing clothing, shoes, and tents; and scavenging for scrap metal to hammer into ice axes and crampons. After escaping, they braved the multiple risks of capture, wild animals (including elephants and rhinoceros), starvation, frigid weather, and some of the most challenging climbing conditions in Africa. The men ascended 16,300 feet to Mount Kenya's Point Lenana, hoisted a homemade flag, and then returned to the misery of the camp. Benuzzi and his comrades never cared that their freedom was fleeting: they climbed Mount Kenya to reaffirm their humanity in the face of a barbaric world war. Very unusual and unexpected. A part of WWII history that I had no prior knowledge of. Written by an Italian years ago make the language sometimes different that I am used to. But I enjoyed the story. I learned about Africa and about the war. I had a friend living in Kenya at the time, so the name of the book got me interested. I like survival stories generally.

Most climbing books are rather boring, even to climbers. There's something about climbing that just doesn't translate well to books. But even though I've never had to break out of a prisoner of war camp just to go climbing, Benuzzi's story just seems more familiar and human than any other climbing story I've ever read. I can imagine myself on his climb, feeling like he was feeling. I don't know if a non-climber would get quite as much out of it, but the story is funny and the adventure is exciting, so give it a shot.

Tremendous story! Should be a major motion picture! The language is a little awkward, from time to time, due to a combination of the fact that it was written 50 years ago, by a gentleman who is not a writer by trade, and who is writing in a foreign tongue. All in all, it does not detract one iota from this remarkable story about the will of the human spirit to seek adventure, and ultimately to be free. A classic "why did we climb it? because it was there!" story.

I have had this book for many years having read it before a photo safari I took to Kenya back in 1991. While there, our guide told us it is required reading in Kenyan schools. It is full of amazing feats both in the characters' escape from a WWII prison camp as well as their adventures and survival while climbing the mountain. I bought it as a gift to a family member who has also been a mountain climber.

unique story, ended too soon.

An extremely well-written book, especially considering the author was not writing in his native language. A crazy idea about climbing a mountain by 3 novices; crazier still under the circumstances of escaping from a POW camp with the intention of returning. I bought the book after having read the story in National Geographic "Adventure" of 2 experienced & well-outfitted mountaineers who re-traced their steps. The original is better!

Julie C. Gilbert, teacher and author, has written a book for students (and even teachers) called 5 Steps to Surviving Chemistry: Tips for Understanding a Challenging Course. It is amazing! When I was in school, wish I had this book....No, allow me make a correction. I wish I had Ms. Gilbert for a Chemistry teacher AND I wish I had this book to help me through some of the concepts I struggled with. Although I enjoyed Chemistry class, I, instead, decided to continue my studies with the English and Spanish languages. For the past 19 years, I have taught high school Spanish and English Lit and Composition. Believe me when I say, this book is very well-written.The book starts off with an introduction, addressed to those reading the book, that explains who this book is for, why it is important/useful, and how to use it so that you can get the most out of it. It is written in a way that made me feel like I was having a normal conversation with my teacher (Ms. Gilbert). She immediately makes readers feel at ease about a topic they, probably, aren't comfortable with to begin with: Chemistry. She gives readers the feeling that they are not alone...they are headed down this difficult road together, teacher and learner.The book is broken up into 13 chapters by topics/themes that can be read and used in any order preferred by the learner. Ms. Gilbert starts off each chapter with a short introduction and explanationon on the topic to be discussed before breaking down the big ideas and concepts (that textbooks - and some teachers - make almost impossible to understand) in easy-to-understand language, suitable to all students. Each chapter is filled with step-by-step instructions, real examples, tables, tips, strategies, and notes, all detailing the "how" and "why" behind the topic at hand. The visuals and real-life examples make these difficult concepts much easier for the average learner to grasp, and her enthusiastic, yet calming, attitude toward the subject makes readers feel like this IS something in which they will be successful (and even want to learn more about!). The Kindle version of this book (I have both print and Kindle) includes many helpful links where the learner can go to extend their learnings or see more examples of specific topics, which I found quite motivating. What this also says to me is that Ms. Gilbert does NOT fill this book with anything except what is necessary. She does not go on and on proving she is an expert in this field. Instead, she directs the readers to other places if they choose to expand on a topic that sparks their interest. To me, an overuse of explanations and examples causes students to be turned off because there is too much information to absorb. Less is more. Knowing WHAT to include and HOW to address her readers is a clear indication that she IS, in fact, a true expert in both Chemistry and Education.The conclusion of the book is outstanding. These tips and strategies are helpful for students everywhere, no matter their field of study. Here, she gives learners ways to use the resources that are available to them, what steps they should take to best use those resources, and how to be most successful when doing so. From a teacher's standpoint, she could not have written a better conclusion. She was right on.I have no doubt Julie Gilbert is a phenomenal teacher. She cares about the needs of all students, and their success in the classroom is important to her. I found it interesting that she also has included her email in places throughout the book, in case readers need to contact her about something that confuses them or if they need extra help finding information. There aren't too many teachers/authors out there willing to do that, especially when they have their plates full with helping their own students. This is quite admirable.I rate the book 5 Steps to Surviving Chemistry: Tips for Understanding a Challenging Course by Julie C. Gilbert 5/5 stars, hands down. I recommend it to high school and college students (as well as teachers) as a guide to help them through their Chemistry course. It would even be an excellent supplement, if not a main guide, to any Chemistry course. Being that this is written by a teacher, rather than by someone in the field, makes this even more appealing because not only does she know what it takes to be successful in the class, but she knows how to explain it so that students will learn and understand the ideas being presented.Thank you for reading my review. This is elemental battlegrounds, and it's a rainbow colored war. I havent played EB yet, but itsounds fun. Anyway, another good book and funnier than usual. There is a Lesson in the story and i think everyone noticed it!It is better to have a best friend than a powerful guild that are bullies who want you to join their group.You'll also Lose your best friend too.It also teaches people not to bully other people in school right?so GREAT JOB I HOPE YOU WRITE MORE OF THESE BOOKS
