Jonathan does an excellent job at breaking down your goals into seven steps and then taking those seven steps and breaking them down even further to more manageable pieces. Each chapter has an activity at the end to help you through the process. I no longer look at my goals and feel overwhelmed. This edition by Norton republishing Patricia Highsmith's second novel, The Price of Salt, or Carol as later titled by the author, is worth its higher price than the other Kindle editions available that are fraught with typos and amateurish typesetting. I imagine most who are checking out reviews here have either already seen the movie Carol (based on the book) or plan to see the movie yet wish to read the book first. I had already read an earlier edition of The Price of Salt prior to seeing the movie recently. I'm glad I've invested in this Norton edition as it includes interesting and informative commentary from Highsmith shedding light into the backstory of her writing the novel mid-20th century in the first place.For me, reading the book and experiencing the movie are a complete package. Like two persons who belong together, words well written and images well framed can be better appreciated than partaking of one without the other.In terms of the novel, Highsmith's prose does a wonderful job of developing its characters, particularly the character Therese who is the story's protagonist. The novel is clearly written from Therese's point of view. It is a coming-of-age story about Therese and her experiences that lead her to falling in love with an older woman, Carol, who is in the midst of getting a divorce. Carol is torn between her love for her daughter, named Rindy, and her attraction and growing romantic love for Therese that puts Carol's relationship with her young daughter at risk. It is a dark story at times fraught with immense tensions and conflicts acutely felt but forcibly suppressed by certain characters as it takes place within the early 1950s. Such is a a time when same-sex attraction was considered both pathological and criminal if acted upon, and the novel's dialogue and narrative must be seen within this repressed societal context of the day. The novel is quite revolutionary for its time, carrying a somewhat ambiguous though positive ending for the two women in love rather than the typical tragic one, and the story continues to be relevant even today. The movie, as brilliantly directed and supurbly acted by all of its cast, and with its own rich historically accurate reproduction and visualization, has a few changes to the original plot that for me, work. I would say if you read the novel before seeing the movie, you will experience the movie more as an insider who recognizes these changes as something complimentary to Highsmith's story. By watching the movie, you can appreciate having greater insight into Carol's part within the story.All said, the novel Carol is a worthy read for anyone who wants to read a complex yet ultimately uplifting love story that happens to be between two women who do not fit into the stereotypes for lesbian relationships of any period.

If you're like me, you know Patricia Highsmith from her Ripley crime novels. But Highsmith, writing under a pseudonym, also wrote this groundbreaking 1950s study of one womanâ€™s sexual awakening. The release of the Hollywood adaptation, under the title â€œCarol,â€ has brought this often overlooked novel the attention it deserves. Even 60 years after its initial publication, â€œThe Price of Saltâ€ remains as relevant, powerful and compulsively readable as ever.The story centers around Therese, a 19-year-old aspiring set designer who suffers from a severe disconnect with the world around her and from her own identity. On the surface, she seems happy: She has a devoted boyfriend, Richard, and just got a temporary job at a department store to make some extra cash. But somethingâ€™s missing from Thereseâ€™s life â€“ something she herself canâ€™t exactly define. (Thereâ€™s a nice bit about the various ways to pronounce Thereseâ€™s name that sums up her confusion: â€œShe was used to a dozen variations, and sometimes she herself pronounced it differently.â€)Enter Carol, a mid-30-something upper-class housewife and mother who comes across as glamorous, beautifully unattainable, and moody. After they meet in the department store where Therese works, the two feel a â€œsudden release, that leap of response in both of them, as if their bodies were of some material which put together inevitably created desire.â€As the first part of â€œThe Price of Saltâ€ traces Therese and Carolâ€™s â€œwill they or wonâ€™t they?â€ relationship and the second sends them on the lam, so to speak, on a cross-country road-trip, Highsmithâ€™s background in crime fiction serves her well. Itâ€™s hard to tell if this is a love story or a thriller, thereâ€™s that much suspense. A shady detective, a conflicted boyfriend, and a mysterious friend from Carol's past all add to the tension.Like the best of Highsmith's novels, "The Price of Salt" doesn't shy away from the more problematic aspects of its own story. For instance, the age difference between the main characters is mentioned a number of times. (Imagine if this novel were about a heterosexual relationship between a man in his mid-30s and a 19-year-old girl.) The novel also explores Highsmithâ€™s preoccupation with identity and, in this case, love's apparent contradiction: even as Therese finds her true self, she loses her identity in Carol's or, as Therese reflects, "she felt like an actor, remembered only now and then her identity with a sense of surprise, as if she had been playing in these last few days the part of someone else, someone fabulously and excessively lucky" in love.In the end, this shouldn't be categorized as a lesbian love story. It's a beautifully realized and meditative novel of one young woman finding the courage to "plunge headlong" into life and love. That's something anyone can relate to.

It was beautiful... every touch, every conversation was magic. Really makes you fall in love with them both, they both want it so much and gosh.

Interesting read, it makes you think. For those that try to mesh a possible scientific explanation of existence after death with the ultimate "why do we exist" scientific questions ... this book has some interesting topics to ponder. The biggest thing I took away from the book is how everything is created with "wisdom". Still leaves you wanting more answers but I guess that is what this journey is about. Hopefully we will find it in the end.

An extraordinary venture undertaken to demonstrate that the beauty and complexity of life can not have come about by chance. Even if you don't believe in God, you should read it, and ponder the mysteries of creation. There is a tremendous amount to think about, and the book is well written, understandable by anyone with an interest (but not necessarily training) in the natural sciences.

Somerset Maugham, in "The Summing Up," confessed that a lot of his favorite reading was "metaphysics." I am beginning to understand why: a good philosopher is trying as hard as he can to discover and explain the truth, and he has little equipment, aside from logic, imagination, other thinkers, and his own hard thinking.I don't know if this book is going to change anyone's thinking about God, but it is (for me) a mind-stretching update into the world of modern science. I mean, do you know that your body has 75 trillion cells, and each one of them is busily manufacturing 2,000 proteins per second?!The Big Bang apparently began with the entire universe at a size smaller than your thumb, and it certainly grew! How many billions of stars and billions of galaxies came from that tiny beginning? How did that happen?Similarly (?), the union of one tiny sperm cell with one egg cell will finally produce a fully-grown human being, with the aforementioned 75 trillion cells, each making 2,000 proteins a SECOND. How did that happen?A further mystery: proteins do not occur in nature, other than proteins manufactured by living cells. You can drain the seas and not find a single protein, unless that protein was made by some sort of life-form and its cells. BUT cells are made of protein, and require protein. Which came first, the chicken or the egg?Another thought-provoking fact is the simple atom. We all remember the little diagram of the atom-as-solar-system from high school --- and we've all (probably) been told that it's inaccurate. It's stunning to find out just how inaccurate it is! Enlarge the nucleus to (say) four inches, and where are the electrons? They're four miles away. Four. Miles. Away. 99.9999999 percent of an atom is nothing but empty space? Well, not quite. The "empty space" is some sort of force field we don't quite understand. Theoretically, the "force" comes from zillions of hypothetical invisible protons humming around. And when we get to the "matter," the weirdness does not stop. All the atomic particles have wave-like properties. It would only be a tiny step further to think "There is no matter in the universe!" That's wrong, of course, but it is certainly right to say that matter is NOT what we imagined it would be. It still works, hammering nails into plywood and all that, and your house is not going to fall down, but quantum mechanics is just weird. (Not only that, in The Devil's Delusion: Atheism and its Scientific Pretensions, Dr. Berlinski maintains that the math we use for relativity stuff and the math we use for quantum stuff are incompatible with one another.I recommend this book very highly. You might have to absorb it in small doses (I did).

If you think that the traditional Darwinian theory of random mutation evolution could have done the job of growing life on earth, read this book. There IS a mind at work out there. It underlies everything. It's name is Wisdom. Dr. Schroeder proves it by showing the scientific evidence in a very pleasant and readable style.

I love this book. It really has me digging deep with every chapter I read. If you have a scientific mind or have someone you what to share with that does then get this book. Schroeder does a great job of rolling away the stones that cause intellectuals to stumble.

This should be a must read for anyone who is searching for the truth about how life in a cell really works. Also, written by someone smart enough to write in a way that us regular people will be able to understand almost all of it.

I have always admired the cartoons of the New Yorker Magazine. Always a little more sophisticated, cerebral and cooler than the rest. Sometimes I may not be sufficiently sophisticated, cerebral or cool enough. Or maybe some are too sophisticated, too cerebral or too cool. And that is sorta the kind of punch line that one can expect from the New Yorker. . So far this year the Cartoons from The New Yorker 2019 Day-to-Day Calendar have been uneven.How important are the cartoons in the New Yorker? They are the inspiration to a serio-comic documentary: Very Semi-. There is even a published collections called: The Best of the Rejection Collection: 293 Cartoons That Were Too Dumb, Too Dark, or Too Naughty for The New YorkerI will be getting both.2019 so far, let down aside, I still recommend this calendar, and will be getting more from time to time in the future. A recent workplace development course entitled " Effective Workplace Consulting" led me to this book. The return on investment was invaluable within the first chapter. Block confirmed that I was performing out of role and taught me to consult with peers and not take on their work. Within the first chapter, I have redefined workplace project roles and tasks, moved to 1:1 meetings with project team members and everyone thanked me as I gingerly gave them their work back. Block prepared me for any resistance which led to better meeting preparation...within the first chapter. I am now acting as a consultant opposed to "manager". My supervisor noticed the change and tendered a compliment on my meeting management within a week of my beginning this book. This book made the difference!.I should have read this book two years ago for my current role and 15 years ago as I started in my career. You cannot afford to not read this book. Personally and professionally Block will show you that you may be acting out of role, futilely exerting energy and setting yourself up for failure. The man speaks the truth. As a professional consultant I was intrigued to see how much of my reality matched up with Peter Block's and it is spot on. I really enjoyed his candor and truth in the struggles and opportunities to help clients make a big difference in their lives. It's a humble profession and Block's advice and system can help eliminate many of the pitfalls in not having a repeatable process. I highly recommend this treasure of a book.

A number of years ago, I found myself without a job for the first time in my adult life. At 40, this was scary until I woke up one morning, created a subchapter-S corporation and became a consultant. This book, along with others by Peter Block, was a significant help in getting started and having the confidence to persevere for two years independently. Now I'm a consultant in a big four firm and the things I learned from this book still ring true.

Having read over a hundred books in the fields of organization development, change management, and consulting, this book has had a tremendous influence on my practice. It is probably one of my top 10 of all time.Block does not talk about the technical aspects of consulting, but focuses on the way of being with the client and ourselves. This is as it should be. After all, we got selected for the job for possessing technical skills. That being said, Block advocates a partnership with the client for a joint discovery of the "real problem" and the "solution". This is in contrast to the traditional expert and the pair of hands models of consulting.

Flawless Consulting is a classic in books on consulting, yet I was slightly disappointed. Don't get me wrong, Flawless Consulting is a good and useful book that will definitively improve your consulting perspectives and skills, yet I had expected more. The parts of the book related to consultant authenticity was excellent, but the parts on consulting phases and contracting felt mechanic. Perhaps I'm just turned off by the phrases 'phases' (which often contradicts with a more continuous perspective) and 'contracts' (which often replace deep trust). The author did mention contract is more of a verbal/mental contract, but the word comes with a lot of baggage.The book is about 350 pages and contains 19 chapters plus some appendixes. It promises it is shorter than previous editions by moving more content online. The first few chapters set the tone for the rest of the book. The first chapter looks at the definition of consulting and introduces the 5 phase consulting process: 1) Entry & Contracting, 2) Discovery and Dialogue, 3) Analysis and the Decision to Act, 4) Engagement and Implementation, and 5) Extension, Recycle or Termination. The rest of the book follows these phases is chronological sequence. The second chapter introduces the collaborative approach to consulting that the book takes. As a consultant, you collaborate with a client on 50/50 basis to together help the client improve. The third chapter introduces the concept of authenticity to consulting, staying true and congruent to your own feelings and intuition and trying to truly collaborate on equal basis to resolve problems. These three concepts: 1) consulting phases, 2) collaborative relation, and 3) authenticity form the basis for the rest of the book.I won't summarize the rest of the chapters as the follow the consulting concepts in the order of the phases. The phases made me uncomfortable though as I've always viewed consulting as a more iterative and continuous activity where there is gradual discovery, decision making and implementation going on all the time. The strict approach that the book took to these phases felt very unnatural to me, but it might have to do with the different types of consulting. Some might be purely project/goal basis and some might be more continuous. The collaborative and authenticity concepts would fit extremely well with a continuous and iterative view on consulting though, so in that sense, I felt that was a missed opportunity.All that said, the book is a full with useful advise on how to improve your consulting skills. It is definitively be useful for any person in a consultative role and would recommend picking this up. Good.

This came to my notice as a consulting class e-book; I purchased a hardcopy after reading the first chapter. I highly recommend it to ANYONE especially if you are looking to learn how to communicate better in ANY situation; but especially when you are communicating from a lesser status position (such as at work; with superiors or customers). As for consulting itself; this is by far the best advice you could ever get; not just for yourself but for anyone you may consult for and their organization.

Louis Fantasia (B.A., Georgetown; M.F.A., California Institute of the Arts) is Director of Shakespeare at the Huntington, the teacher training institute of the Huntington Library, Art Galleries and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California. The Historia Augusta is not exactly the most scholarly of works from the ancient world--but it ranks as one of the funnest. Taking inspiration from Suetonius, this work examines the men who led the Roman empire at its height. This volume starts with Nerva and ends right with the start of the crisis of the Third Century. While often fun and informative, be warned this is not exactly the most scholarly or balanced of sources. Still, there are some memorable portraits here of the emperors and the usurpers. One caveat for Kindle readers--a third of the book contains notes, indexes, family trees and maps. Some of this material proved hard to manage and is rather awkward (some pages have several large endnotes while others have one short endnote).

This book is a collection of biographies of the final Roman emperors, supposedly written by six men, but quite possibly a hoax written in the late fourth century. It includes seventeen portraits, as well as the earlier "Lives" of Nerva and Trajan.About Trajan, they wrote, "It was a fault in him that he was a heavy drinker and also a pederast. But he did not incur censure, for he never committed any wicked deed because of this. He drank all the wine that he wanted and yet remained sober, and in his relations with boys he harmed no one. It is reported that he tempered his wine-bibbing by ordering that his requests for drink should be ignored after long banquets." (Pg. 47)Hadrian "both honoured and made rich all who professed the arts---although he always goaded them by his questioning... He treated with the greatest friendliness Epictetus and Heliodorus and philosophers and... grammarians, rhetoricians, musicians, geometricians, painters and astrologers... Teachers who appeared to be unfit for their profession he enriched and honoured, and them dismissed from their posts." (Pg. 75)They record, "when Marcus was weeping for his fosterer who had died, and was being called on by the court servants to refrain from displaying affection, Antoninus' reply was: 'Let him be human, for neither philosophy nor imperial power takes away feelings.'" (Pg. 105)They state, "Commodus began a life of orgiastic abandonment in the palace, amid banquets and baths: he had three hundred concubines, whom he assembled together for the beauty of their person... equally from the commons and the nobility, by force and by payment." (Pg. 165)Although not the most "trustworthy" as a historical source, this book is very valuable to any collection of ancient Roman history.

The German scholar H. Dessau unmasked the six authors of the Historia Augusta (HA) as the brainchildren of one impostor, whom Sir Ronald Syme in his `Ammianus and the Historia Augusta' calls a master of historical romance.This book contains 17 lives of emperors from the HA, together with 2 small biographies of Nerva and Trajan compiled by the excellent translator Anthony Birley.The anonymous author of the HA mingled excerpts from other works, particularly by Cassius Dio and Herodian, with his own `fiction' to compile a parody of imperial hagiographies, exposing those who `belittle the defeated'.It is a work in super-Hollywood style with fake letters, bogey references and even an insult litany on Commodus. The latter `killed with his own hand many thousands of wild animals, even elephants.' During the reign of Antoninus Pius, `four lions became tame of their own accord and yielded to capture'.Hadrian was a Stakhanovist: `At one and the same time, he wrote, dictated, listened and conversed with his friends - if it can be believed.'Avidus Cassius had a schizophrenic character; he `seemed truculent and rough, but sometimes placid and mild; often he was devout, but at other times scornful of sacred things; avid of wine, and again abstinent; eager for food but able to endure starvation; a devotee of Venus and a lover of chastity.'Marcus Antoninus `made the bad good and the good very good.'Pescennius Niger insulted his soldiers: `You have the Nile and you ask for wine?'But the author is fundamentally a moralist: `Wretched is the republic which endures those men who are desirous of riches, and the rich.'Severus `killed many for allegedly consulting astrologers or seers about his health, especially each and every person suitable for the imperial office.... Yet the murderer of these men is regarded as a god.'Emperors don't need hagiographies: (Hadrian) `The lot of emperors is wretched, for they cannot be believed in cases of attempted usurpation - unless they have been killed.'This cleverly disguised author wrote a superb hoax, which is a must read for all lovers of classical literature.

----- AUDIENCE -----I acquired this book for two reasons. First, I was "putting my feelers out" in the job market and facing the possibility of being technically evaluated at a day's notice, and frankly it's been a while since college! Second, as I find myself in an interviewer's role occasionally, I was starting to wonder whether my process and questions were fair to today's job seekers. I was therefore looking at this book from those two perspectives, although most people probably fall into the first group: being an interviewee.----- FOR THE INTERVIEWEE -----The author doesn't make the explicit distinction, but to me, advise in this book falls into one of three categories: (1) non- technical interview advise, (2) technical section and (3) general and trick questions.(1) A sizable portion of this book is dedicated to interview etiquette and other non- technical things, which I think will be especially helpful for inexperienced or not-so-socially-versed people. The author strikes a familiar tone here, being a programmer and (as he freely admits) introvert himself. Some of the advise is just common sense, but it's nice to see it all written out, because don't we all forget things or have little quirks. Knowing what to expect and how to behave shows confidence and that can be half the rent. One particular thing that stuck out is how current the material is. E.g. I just got my invite to the new Stackexchange Careers a couple weeks ago, and sure enough the author mentions it.(2) The purely technical part of the book is probably the weakest. And it's got to be: it treats a lot of subjects, sometimes in multiple languages, and we all know just how large the algorithm books even from the 70s are! I think the most helpful way to look at the technical section is as a study directory. Still, some things are missing or underrepresented from this "suggested curriculum". For example, concurrency could be expanded, and a word about modern algorithms such as the genetic bunch would be neat.(3) The "infamous and trick questions" are actually my favorites. This sort of interview question is falling out of favor these days (HR sometimes bans them), and it's probably thanks to formulations such as "how many golf balls can you fit in a bus". But these strike me as entertaining (the first time you hear them anyway), and a good test for creativity and general problem- solving intelligence. If anything, knowledge of these notorious questions can bring you bonus points in my book - especially when you're able to turn the table by making an "oh, this sounds like the Dining Philosophers problem" remark.----- FOR THE INTERVIEWER -----Perhaps not so much intended, I find this book to be a valuable reference for an interviewer as well. For starters, I've always been afraid to ask easy questions for fear of being ridiculed by my own peers. But no more! Easy questions put the interviewee at ease, plus if he/she really doesn't know what 0x3A is in binary, you've just saved everybody a lot of time.The book also gave me a good sense of what are harder but still fair questions to ask, and to place more value in how problems are approached, versus hearing the perfect solution - after all, perfect solutions can be looked up online! Overall, I think this book made me a better evaluator of IT applicants.----- VERDICT -----I think this is a great read for anyone looking for an application programmer job, whether just graduated or "old school". As long as you use it right (directory, not complete knowledge) I don't think you can go wrong with this book. It's also insightful for people conducting interviews, giving them a sense of fairness.

Whoa, don't be fooled. This is very elementary and not too technical based. Some of the technical chapters include: Code Quality, Quirks and Idioms (like 1 or 2 examples from various languages, nothing in depth like the 'Effective C++' series), Testing, and a couple others. I guess I judged the book by the cover, and subtle changes would have given me a way different impression. The HUGE '160 QUESTIONS' made me immediately assume technical programming questions, but most of them are verbal/communication types of questions and not even all programming-specific. There's a whole chapter called 'Notorious Interview Questions' that have your cliches like golf-balls-in-a-school-bus and Dining Philosophers. Not a bad book, just a bit misleading. Pair this with a good set of programming questions and answers (whether they are from other books or things like career cup, etc.). Good luck on the interviews!

The book covers exactly what I need in the style I need it. I was afraid it was going to focus on a different level of programming, ignoring low-level things like machine-level questions, algorithms, etc. but it covers all those areas in a very accessible style.The only reason I didn't give it five stars is that almost all the examples are in C#, which is not a language I'm familiar with. The plus side of this is I got to see some of what C# looks like. The down side is that I have to figure out how to map the examples into a language I can compile and run (C++ or Java) to fiddle with them myself.

Long story short - this is a great book, whether or not you're actually preparing for the upcoming programming interview. I wasn't at the time when I read the book, but I bought it because it seemed to me that it covered a lot of valuable and interesting topics in one place, topics that every programmer should really be (at least) familiar with.If you're looking for a highly algorithmic book, this may not be the best choice (Cracking the Coding Interview might be a slightly better choice in that case), but overall I think this book may be even more valuable because it gives a great overview.In the end, I'm only kind of sad that I bought the Kindle version, but I was in a rush before a trip and wanted to have it with me. Otherwise I would've gone with the paperback version, but if it ever gets a second edition, I'm grabbing that one, too. (paperback :) )

I purchased the book for two primary purposes: for myself, a seasoned programmer, as a review of essential software development concepts and practices; and for my daughter who is graduating from college and experiencing her first interviews (OSU Computer Engineering). I finished reading it in 3-4 days. There are a number of areas where I need to brush up on my skills. The author also introduced me to a number of terms that I was not familiar with. For my daughter, I hope that it's a review, an education, and that it helps her in terms of knowing what she might run into during interviews. Look at the table of contents. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

This book does not only give me very important information about the technical questions but also told me how to confirm the company cultures, and all details on the interview, such as whether I need to dress suites, etc. I learned the knowledge and found two jobs including my current job two weeks later.
