From the Back Cover

A groundbreaking work of science that confirms, for the first time, the independent existence of the mind–and demonstrates the possibilities for human control over the workings of the brain.Conventional science has long held the position that 'the mind' is merely an illusion, a side effect of electrochemical activity in the physical brain. Now in paperback, Dr Jeffrey Schwartz and Sharon Begley's groundbreaking work, The Mind and the Brain, argues exactly the opposite: that the mind has a life of its own.Dr Schwartz, a leading researcher in brain dysfunctions, and Wall Street Journal science columnist Sharon Begley demonstrate that the human mind is an independent entity that can shape and control the functioning of the physical brain. Their work has its basis in our emerging understanding of adult neuroplasticity–the brain's ability to be rewired not just in childhood, but throughout life, a trait only recently established by neuroscientists. Through decades of work treating patients with obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), Schwartz made an extraordinary finding: while following the therapy he developed, his patients were effecting significant and lasting changes in their own neural pathways. It was a scientific first: by actively focusing their attention away from negative behaviors and toward more positive ones, Schwartz's patients were using their minds to reshape their brains–and discovering a thrilling new dimension to the concept of neuroplasticity. The Mind and the Brain follows Schwartz as he investigates this newly discovered power, which he calls self–directed neuroplasticity or, more simply, mental force. It describes his work with noted physicist Henry Stapp and connects the concept of 'mental force' with the ancient practice of mindfulness in Buddhist tradition. And it points to potential new applications that could transform the treatment of almost every variety of neurological dysfunction, from dyslexia to stroke–and could lead to new strategies to help us harness our mental powers. Yet as wondrous as these implications are, perhaps even more important is the philosophical dimension of Schwartz's work. For the existence of mental force offers convincing scientific evidence of human free will, and thus of man's inherent capacity for moral choice.

Neuroplasticity: Changing the physical brain by using the mind itself.  Rewiring the brain by conscious activity. Tracing the author’s path on how how he came to his conclusions over the years is interesting in its own right.1. He was well aware of William James (1900) who wrote on the “mind and the brain” and contended that there was more to the mind than a physical entity.  James talked about “volition" (free will), but could not make a scientific case for proving it.2. Author knew that a child forms most all brain function potential by the age of two. He also knew that when young children lost half of their brain to surgery, they were NOT severely handicapped.3. As a neuropsychologist, the author worked with many patients who were suffering from Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and others who had lost part of their brain function due to stoke or other causes.  Instead of giving patients drugs to affectcertain parts of the physical brain, which was common practice, he tried self-mind-healing remedies where the patient took back control by “focus”, “intention” and “attention”. Author quote: “The discovery that neuroplasticity can be induced in people who have suffered a stroke demonstrated, more than any other finding, the clinical power of a brain that can rewire itself."4. After years of working with OCD patients, the author used a disciplined format of, “Relabel, Reattribute, Refocus, Revalue”, resulting in an independent scientific application that could be applied to validate the results. (All the while he was bucking the materialist psychologists who wanted no part of his “mysterious solution”.)  Author’s process was at last confirmed scientifically by controlled studies.Author quote: “Since I was arguing that the mind can change the brain, persuading the scientific community that I was right required that scientists accept an evan more basic fact that the adult brain can change at all.”5. At this point the author had won the argument for “duality”; that the brain and the mind are connected but that they are completely separate entities.  (Darwinists and materialists deny duality since brain to them equals mind.)He also had vindicated William James contention that there was a real concept of volition or free will.6. The author then goes on to investigate if there is any basis in science for this “mind over matter mystery” to come about, i.e., how does the rewiring take place? He was open to the option that it might be a mystery or enigma of physics, so he investigated quantum physics where physicist Niels Bohr had already shown that consciousness between mind and quantum particles changes the state of the particles.Niels Bohr quote: "Anyone who is not shocked by quantum theory has not understood it.”  (Einstein understood what Bohr meant but never accepted it.)  With the triumph of the quantum theory, physics stopped being about nature itself and instead became about our knowledge of nature (human observations): “No phenomenon is a phenomenon until it is an observed phenomenon.”  Without knowing the details of quantum theory, It should be obvious that the mind and matter are in some way mysteriously entangled. The final step was to apply the quantum effects to what is going on in the brain of an observer, and what scientists know as the Quantum Zeno Effect.  The neurons involve electrical impulses and ions so we have the quantum ingredients needed if changes can be effectual.  Simply put, the Zeno Effect says that when an observation is made (intention/attention of the mind), it holds onto the neural connection that has been created, and with continued, focused observations over time holds that neural connection. So the brain gets physically changed/rewired by focused use of the mind!So the author finally satisfied his puzzlement on how the OCD patients and those with other brain damage could by "force of mind" produce healing.  The author makes a comment "that although I believed in the concept in a spiritual sense, I wasn’t yet thinking about whether such a mental force might have a physical reality.”

I can personally vouch for the efficacy of Cognitive Therapy at altering my own OCD and this book's descriptions and explanations explain what is going on. It has been wonderfully reassuring to read a scientific explanation for the lessening of my symptoms. Yet, I was troubled by the further arguments. 1. The author claims that successful use of willful mindedness changes the brain circuitry and lessens OCD symptoms and this is proven by PET scans. Yet I can't agree that this demolishes the Newtonian materialist world view because it shows the mind changing the brain. A non material thing changing a material thing. This is a vast conclusion based on a specific insight. It is eerily evocative of the Creationist arguments which claim to demolish natural selection by pointing to one problem with the fossil record. An entire foundation of science is not destroyed by one contradictory or unexplained aspect. 2. Quantum mechanics and the brain are a major part of this book. Fascinating but the idea that the world only exists when humans observe it seems preposterous. The brain only exists because of the observing mind is implied. The strange issues of quantum physics are blended into spiritual concepts of mind. I am uncomfortable with this. 3. The author claims that the firing of neurons cannot explain all that the brain does, but does that mean we have to accept forces and non-material concepts as real? A gap in our understanding has to be filled with a "force" which cannot be quantified or described? Because neuroscience ignored consciousness and mind does not mean they are totally wrong and we can go back to spirits and demons running things. The excesses of the materialist viewpoint pale in comparison with the excesses of centuries of the alternative. An OCD sufferer of the Middle Ages would have been considered to be under the control of a demon, now it seems we are asking a demon to stop the OCD. The firing of neurons explains so much while a non material spirit mind can not be described. I am not ready to overturn the materialist world view but I very much appreciated this book's discussion of OCD and neuroplasticity. It is worth reading for those points and also to make you think about the topics I have mentioned above.

This books sets out to scientifically prove that them ind can heal the body. Neuroplasticity is an amazing concept and in this book it is used in depth to treat and cure many mental illnesses. If you're interested in the power of the human mind and brain I highly recommend getting this book. It's a fantastic read. You will have to learn one key thing if you don't know already; and that is that the mind is different than the brain...Or is it? *brain explodes*There are many great comparisons in this book to try to validate that the mind is separate the brain and others that say the mind is the same as the brain.

Sort of helpful *before* your trip to plan high-level itinerary, but the book reads like a travel brochure rather than a guide. Very limited use once on the trip. The first 15 pages are the most useful sections. They give you high-level recommendations on regions to spend your time (where and for how many days), as well as “must-dos” in NZ.The book does well on zooming into a city’s center and showing where the clusters of restaurants, bars, and notable shopping areas are. That helps you quickly figure out how close a particular restaurant is to where you're staying (if you're staying in-town).General lack of information on “things to do” while in NZ: For example, in Wanaka, it makes almost no mention of any particular good walking tracks (Rob Roy to Mt. Aspiring, duh!) and rather just becomes a “phone book” of commercial companies offering guided experiences. There isn’t even much commentary on the differences between the various guided companies. This is completely useless since this info is easily searchable on Google/Tripadvisor and readily available in all of the ad material in NZ. And the Internet has real user reviews! This theme repeats itself throughout most of the cities in the book. The free magazine your car rental company gives you is almost just as good.Too much focus on commercial guide company listings and not enough real info. For example, it’s easy to google kayak companies in Abel Tasman, but the more difficult question is what else I can fit into my drive from Abel Tasman heading south to the next big thing? Any good pit stops? Quick bang for the buck detours I should make? And how long will it take? What places are good bases for exploring a region? These are the practical questions that the book will not provide answers to.Most of the maps suck. They are either super zoomed in to one specific neighborhood, or super zoomed out showing 1/4 of the island. This works for very metropolitan city visits, but not for NZ. There is no middle ground view for the towns themselves. Given NZ sometimes has confusing (or non-existent) road signs, this info is key! This makes navigating from 1 small town to another challenging, especially without GPS navigation.Everything is grouped into one “region” with no practical information on navigating through the area. For example, the book solidly touts the Hot Water Beach as a fun visit, and groups it in the Auckland section, but fails to mention that it’s 2+ hours away from Auckland. What else do you suggest I do that day? Are there any stops along the way that are worth making? That's 4+ hours of driving in a day that it casually sells as a 'stop by while you're in Auckland and then have coffee in the afternoon back in the city center'! Tell me it's 4 hours away and help me build an Auckland itinerary instead.Positive: some good restaurant recommendations that turned out quite good. However, I could have just as easily searched these on the day-of online.

About Five years ago, I purchased the Lonely Planet guide to the South Island New Zealand. This guide looks like a combination of the North Island and the South Island Guides. The section on the South Island looks almost identical to the guide that I have that is Five years old. I was hoping for some updated descriptions or new entries or expanded areas - instead, it is the same old thing.

I'm a big fan of lonely planet guidebooks but this one wasn't nearly as comprehensive and insightful as a lot of the other places they review. It's also good to know what not to do and stay away from like completely waste of time tourist traps. I ended up going to some places that other LP guidebooks would very kindly steer me away from (like Lake Tekapo which isn't actually a lake but a reservoir and doesn't actually have any real hotsprings just a big swimming pool with heated lake water, plus the mountain views are infinitely better only about 30 minutes up the road)

This guide seems to be pretty good in that it is much like nearly all others. There is information about a large number of things, but it is still hard to make decisions about what to see. There just isn't enough information about any of the items to create a clear understanding of what you might want to see or skip

Lonely Planet is always my favorite travel guide. It may not be the most detailed, but it is definitely the most accessible. Description is succinct and maps are accurate. The short essay on the history of New Zealand is the gem.

My husband and I loved this guide book! It has a lot of fun information in it as well as very practical info about hotels, food, and activiites. I wish it had more about camping since NZ is big about freedom camping but everything else about the book is amazing.

Have used Lonely Planet books when traveling several times in various countries but this edition for New Zealand was BY FAR THE WORST!!!It seemed to just be an extended advertisement for outfitters and tourist traps. Better than not having any guide book at all but really didn't measure up to the Lonely Planet standard.

Used extensively while planning for and road-tripping South Island for 8 days this month, in conjunction with many online tourism and review sites. Definitely used it to both select and avoid some activities and restaurants, and was happy to see that some places we'd selected independently were mentioned in the book.

I love books of church architecture. For me Rome was like Catholic Disneyland. However, I also like classical music and my problem with classical music is the same as it is with looking at churches - I can't figure out the eras or the styles, let alone recognize the work of a certain architect. If this is you I would buy the book. If for no other reason, you could spend a lifetime occasionally picking it up and turning to any page at random and find something enjoyable. I can't say to much more because it only came a few months ago but I knew from the first I would love it.

Interesting book, but a lot of print is way too small. Great pictures, and I realize a lot of the side bars are small to accommodate the full page prints on glossy paper. Still hard to read and enjoy. THe book is divided in three parts history, parts of the church, forms. It was interesting to see things change over time and what doesn't.

Too much text. I was looking for photos of cathedral interiors. There are some but there are too many photos of small areas and articles within the church rather than long shots of Naves and Chapels.

Whether theory or fact this is a fun and thought-provoking read. Having visited churches in many countries, and, no doubt, more to come, I will look at them with a different perspective.

This book exceeded my expectations on every level. It is written by an serious author who clearly researched his subject and has not allowed himself to be corrupted by revisionist history or political correctness. The photographs are large and beautifully reproduced;every detail the author refers to is plainly visible. The text is reserved and restrained, but contains a wealth of information and detail.Everything about this book is exceptional, from the quality of the writing to the quality of the paper. It even has a ribbon bookmark. When is the last time you saw one of those?

Love the insider details and wonderful pictures. Great book.

Interesting subject matter. However, a good amount of subject matter wasn't covered: e.g. stained glass windows, symbols used by the early churches on tiles, graves, mosaics, etc.

Wonderful review of architecture and church history.

Review

"This beguiling, thought-provoking, sumptuously illustrated, and engaging book is essential reading." --Current World Archaeology"'On the Ocean' is a magnificent book, being carefully crafted and requiring all of Barry Cunliffe's encyclopaedic knowledge. The image portrayed, through multilateral means, offers a coherent narrative that can be followed through different times and spaces, offering both the overall view and the detailed developments. Stefan Vasilache, Journal of Ancient History and Archaeology No. 4.4"On the Ocean is a book all nautical (and terrestrial) archaeologists should read... It provides a comprehensive overview from a seafaring perspective of the Mediterranean and Atlantic from the beginnings of humankind's voyaging in these waters to the discovery of the Americas." -- Colin Martin (University of St Andrews), The International Journal of Nautical Archaeology"This is a stunning work, handsome and massive, its author a distinguished and prolific archaeologist. The maps offer a 'sea-wise view of the world,' and their unconventional projections bring readers more deeply into the narrative, which is enhanced by numerous color photographs....[T]hose with a serious interest in the subject will find this splendid, challenging book immensely rewarding....Essential."--J. C. Perry, CHOICE"The book adopts a familiar format to Cunliffe's other recent volumes and supplies everything we have come to expect. It is hugely ambitious in scope, fluently written and beautifully illustrated with panoramic photographs of landscapes and monuments, plus trademark mapping... In betwe en, the narrative takes in deep geological history, the nature of winds, tides and currents, the night sky, the peopling of islands and coastal areas and details of ship- and boat-building technology." -- Robert Witcher, Antiquity Reviews, December 2017"An absorbing and lively account of the early Atlantic and Mediterranean. Importantly, it reflects the latest research and delves deeply into the motives of those who sailed them: not just where and how they travelled, but what fears these seas evoked."--History Today"A grand and beautifully illustrated work, offering a fascinating perspective from which to understand human development and achievement."--Michael Scott, BBC History Magazine"[T]he total effect of On the Ocean is to encourage a new way of looking at European history using a maritime perspective. I hope it changes the way people think: it is good enough to do so."--Felipe Fernández-Armesto, Literary Review"This is a stunning work, handsome and massive, its author a distinguished and prolific archaeologist... Those with a serious interest in the subject will find this splendid, challenging book immensely rewarding."--CHOICE Reviews

This is a great history by Cunliffe. The history of sailing and navigating the European coasts and north Africa as well. All the way up to the 1500s is covered. Fascinating material. The Greeks and Celts as well as Romans are covered. Buy and read today.

Cunliffe's descriptions always are presented with defined premises and probable results that are corroborated with current archaeological, genetic and linguistic artifacts and debates. While the book's title may not be original it is certainly the best summation of maritime discoveries compared with Pythias' limited descriptions from the 4th century BC. I look forward to Sir Barry's next research.

Barry Cunliffe did it again. The research that went into this book gives terrific insight into early boat construction and some of the hardship early merchant-sailors endured.

This is an extremely interesting book for those who want to read factual books.

Be warned! I have just received this, and I'm sure it is as good a text as any of Sir Barry's books. However it is printed in the smallest font of any commercially available book I've ever owned. I dare say the publishers did this so they wouldn't have to release the book in two volumes, but they've done the reader no service!
