Georgina Rannoch thought she would have a few months to relax and help her flashy mother, a former actress, work on her tell-all memoir, until her mother goes running off to be with her current lover during a time of crisis. Still without a penny to her name and disinclined to go back to live under the thumb of her overbearing sister-in-law, "Georgie" is relieved to get an assignment that seems right up her alley: to prep a newly-found Australian heir to a Dukedom to the proper protocol of running a ducal estate. The Australian turns out to be a bright, handsome young man who's more than a little puzzled about all the hoops his English counterpart has to jump through, and the current Duke, who hasn't supplied the family with an heir because he's "that way," takes an instant dislike to him. He'd rather proclaim his valet the heir instead. Soon after he says so, he's found dead, with his Australian nephew's knife in his back. This is a fun outing in the "Royal Spyness" cozy mystery series, although you really don't care if the rude Duke has been murdered or not because he's such an utter pill! More fun are his male "followers," and Jack, the Aussie heir, is a good partner for Georgie's sleuthing. The mystery is reasonably complicated and the country house setting comfortable and familiar. A few anachronisms and inaccurate turns of phrase creep in, and for the life of me, I seem to remember a similar story in another mystery series. Still, another enjoyable visit with one of my favorite mystery characters.
I am a long-time fan of the Royal Spyness series, but this one is probably my least favorite yet. As always, there's a mystery to be solved, but this one was just kinda flat. There's a murdered loose in a family manor, but not much happens. Everyone wants to suspect the outsider, but Georgie feels he's innocent. Darcy is present through most of the book, but there is zero development with Darcy and Georgie. (I'm not saying that they should get on with it or anything, but isn't it about time for some kind of twist in their relationship? It is one of the over-arching plot lines of the series, and it really gets the backseat in a story that could have certainly used a bit more excitement)I thought the ending of the book was a pretty good twist, but arriving at that reveal was kind of lackluster.
This is another entertaining book in the Royal Spyness series of cozy mysteries. As with all cozy mysteries, it is not so much the mystery that holds the story together but, rather, the cast of characters and their interactions. As thirty-fifth in line to the British throne, the impoverished Lady Georgiana Rannoch is on yet another mission for her cousin, the Queen. This time her mission is to mold the heir to a dukedom in the intricacies of high society. Considering the fact that this heir was plucked from the wilds of the Australian Outback, Georgiana has her work cut out for her. Moreover, the Duke himself has his own ideas about who should be his heir, further complicating things for Georgiana. Finding herself stuck in the Duke's manor home with a motley crew at odds with each other, things go from bad to worse when the Duke meets an untimely and unlamented death. With assistance from her beau, the darling Darcy, and her best friend, Belinda, Georgiana hopes to put to right what has gone so horribly wrong. This is an easy, breezy cozy little mystery that fans of the series will enjoy, as will all those who appreciate this genre.
Georgie, technically Lady Georgina Rannoch, is once again desperate for a place to live. Her brother, the duke of Rannoch, has been convinced by his wife to set Georgia free--that is, to force her to find her own way to live. So when the Queen asks her to do a favor for a royal friend, she is definitely interested. When she finds out that the job includes living in a huge mansion and comes with food and the good life, she agrees to become a tutor for the new heir, just recently arrived from his life as a worker on an Australian outback. If this sounds too good to be true, you're right. Soon members of the family start to have accidents, and Georgie becomes involved. This is a fine mystery. Georgia continues to develops more depth, as do the secondary characters. It is not an action-packed novel, but the plot moves along nicely. If you have read some of the previous books, you might find this to be a notch better.
