This book is impossible to put down once you start reading it. It's an easy-to-read, graphically descriptive, non-fiction account of the lives of poor men, women, and kids along the Mexican side of the border, and their enormously hard struggle to survive from one day to the next, and how difficult it is for them to take care of themselves and / or their families. It tells about the appalling conditions and lives of the orphans, and the tough but brave people who try to help them, and the misguided efforts of some of those people. In fascinating detail, it describes the daily lives and events of the trash-pickers. The information in this book is told in chapter format. Each chapter has a black-and-white photo (although the photos are not exceptional or interesting, and in a couple of them, it's hard to make out the details). The tone is hugely depressing. DO NOT READ THE CHAPTER ABOUT THE BALD MONKEY. If you don't want nightmares, just skip right over that section. The part about Eduardo is equally distressing and pitiful.
This book picks up where "Across the Wife" left off. "Across the Wire" was better, but this book still gives a dramatic description of some of the aspects of the lives of the poorest of the poor in TJ.The saddest part is how Luis describes the people who have contacted him after having read the first book. "Very few want to send money," he laments. Money certainly isn't the answer to all the world's problems, but it would certainly help alleviate some of the suffering. It's sad that even after having read such heartbreaking stories few people wish to do the easiest act to help: write a check.Surprisingly absent from this book is the author's suggestions for a solution to the problem. This speaks of Urrea's intelligence or perhaps how much he's learned from his experiences. THERE IS NO EASY SOLUTION! There is no remedy that can be written in a few pages in a book.
Another powerful read by Louis Urrea. He has an ability to tell a story, to open up characters and to expose the sad situation of the poor who live and work and survive in the Tijuana garbage dumps. He tells the story with great empathy and little sentimentality. The characters come alive,

I found this very touching and heart-breaking in that it is true and people live like this in our world. I found it encouraging because it caused me to appreciate what I have here in the states. This is very educational and should be a must-read for tweens and teens here in the states.
Culturally raw and beautiful at the same time. How can such broken survivor s be so rich in life and love. No judgement will do this justice.
