Review

"When trying to explain the timing and course of events at Salem, historians almost never turned to the assumptions about gender―maleness and femaleness―embedded within a Puritan cosmology. Elizabeth Reis' rich-minded (and delightfully titled) Damned Women takes great strides toward addressing these omissions. . . . Reis shifts the inquiry away from the attributes and interests of individuals, toward radical Protestantism, gender ideologies and male-female internalization of these powerful intellectual systems. She seeks to understand, first, how gender systems cut across religious belief, both during and after the trails; in the process, she is able to draw the history of witchcraft trials into the intellectual history of Puritanism."―Women's Review of Books"In this thoughtful and stimulating book, Reis has reintroduced religion and the Devil into the discussion of 17th-century New England witchcraft, reminding readers that despite factors such as psychology, property, class distinctions, economic differences, and geography, New Englanders understood witchcraft to be a contest between God and the Devil. . . . Reis argues that men saw their sin as specific ungodly actions, easily overcome, while women interpreted their sin as inherent in their very natures, far less easily resisted. . . . She concludes that the Salem episode change society's view of the Devil, in that the 18th century came to view the Devil less as a physical presence and more as a spiritual tempter, much easier to resist. Strongly recommended."―Choice"Reis makes a complex and persuasive argument that men and women defined their relationship to sin in different ways. . . . Reis has offered a richly textured and deeply informed study. . . . This is an important and valuable book, one that broadens our understanding of a variety of issues, particularly those related to matters of gender. Reis has presented a major contribution to the scholarship of seventeenth-century New England which also opens avenues for investigation that go beyond her splendid treatment of the 'witchcraft' issue."―Bernard Rosenthal, The New England Quarterly"In this interesting book, Elizabeth Reis argues that ordinary Puritans were as much concerned about damnation as they were about sanctification. . . . In its attention to popular ideas about supernatural reality and their role in constructing gender, this book is an important contribution to our understanding of American religious thought―and a timely one, given the resurgence of supernatural beliefs today. Moreover, Reis's emphasis on the power of religious belief is enlightening, as is her skillful return to Puritan culture as a basis for understanding the historical development of American religious thought."―Amanda Porterfield, Catholic Historical Review"Damned Women reflects the new cultural history in its exploration of magic, folk religion, and Puritan ideology at the interstice of the Salem witch trials. Through her concentration upon the ideological constructions of Satan and evil, Reis charts the transition from pre-Enlightenment to rationalist thought―her discussion enhanced by the incorporation of literary texts and striking visual images. . . . Intrigued by women who confessed to witchcraft and women who accused other women, Reis embarks upon a sophisticated exploration of the gendered language and interconnected ideology that constructed witchcraft, Satan, evil, and the human self. . . . Reis's arguments are intriguing . . . Damned Women is exciting and provocative. . . . Damned Women makes a significant contribution to the scholarship about gender and religion."―Journal of Interdisciplinary History"A reader unfamiliar with Puritan doctrine or its subtle deviation from Calvinism will quickly become informed. All key terms are clearly defined in context, and the book is heavily footnoted with early and modern sources. Most striking are the confessions by the unfortunate accused."―EBSCO Publishing/EBSCOhost and Northern Light"An impressive book from which I learned a great deal."―John M. Murrin, Princeton University

This book has been used in graduate courses that I took as a student, specifically for a Religion in Colonial America graduate lecture/discussion. The author presents a thoughtful consideration of gender and the ways in which it shapes religious experience, eschewing a lengthy analysis of Salem itself in favor of a fascinating study of Puritan theology of the seventeenth century and the ways in which it intersected with understandings of gender to structure the lives of New England Puritans. The most fascinating aspect to me was the evidence for different responses to sin - men tended to externalize their bad behavior as something committed but not an integral aspect of their inward character, while women tended to internalize their sins as a sign of their soul's depravity. When mixed with the fatalistic/nihilistic aspects of Calvinist predetermination this created an atmosphere of desperation and a crisis of salvation and faith that helps understand the passionate affirmations of bewitchment that accompanied the court confessions of women accused of witchcraft. This text is useful for anyone interested in Puritans, religion in the 1600s, and gender. I will be using this book in the undergraduate course that I am teaching in the fall as a more specific study of gender's influence on colonial British society and religion. A good companion text to read regarding the confessional relationship and power dynamics inherent in these confrontations, though in a different context, is Carlo Ginzburg's "The Cheese and the Worms," which is a microhistorical treatment of an obscure Italian Inquisition case brought against a radical miller named Menocchio that also addresses common beliefs that are often in opposition to, or differ from, institutional religious doctrine.

Ordered for school.

Although i leanred new facts that i had never knew about the salem trials, i found my self nodding to sleep several times and reading the same points over and over.

all this book has done is denounce women and witches. the writer should review how her "subjects" really are before she strikes them down! VERY DISTATSEFUL

Quick delivery and exactly what I needed.

The Startup Funding Book, by Nicolaj Højer Nielsen

Review

"Getting a startup actually started, funded, and then operational is not for the faint of heart. It’s a complex and generally daunting process. Nicolaj’s “The Startup Funding Book” is your go-to and how-to manual for navigating your path in building a startup you can be proud of. As an entrepreneur myself, I can say the book needs to be on your list of required reading!" - Shomit Ghose, Managing Director & Partner at Onset Ventures“Nicolaj was instrumental in getting Recon Instruments off the ground. As one of its first shareholders, he led the first angel round and subsequently helped raise millions of dollars from angel investors around the world, using his network and expertise to identify people that would invest in what seemed to be a crazy idea at the time. His personal drive and ability to simplify and drive clarity was hugely beneficial in navigating the sometimes complex process of early-stage fundraising. I strongly urge entrepreneurs to follow his pragmatic advice in this book. It will get you results.” - Dan Eisenhardt, co-founder of Recon Instruments“When I read business books, I normally set out to highlight everything I find important in it with a yellow marker. I drop some books half way because I have marked almost nothing. I read others to the end because I frequently find important passages to mark up. And then occasionally I read books where I have to stop using the marker, since I would otherwise need to paint most of the book yellow. Nicolaj’s book falls in this third category. It is extremely concise and practical, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking to raise capital for a startup company.” - Lars Tvede, investor, author and serial entrepreneur.“Nicolaj Nielsen shows you how to analyse what funding your venture needs and assesses the pros and cons of every major source. He then helps you reverse-engineer the way investors will think about financing your business and teaches you how to align your pitch with their mindsets. The section on how to find and work with a co-founder is worth the price of the book alone. Read this book before you start your business — its practical, intelligent advice could save you many months and missteps.” - Philip Anderson, INSEAD Alumni Fund Chaired Professor of Entrepreneurship“My team and I have spent the last year developing our web and app platform and plan to grow the business through acquiring funding. Despite spending hours searching, I simply couldn’t find a decent book on the different types of venture investment methods, let alone one aimed at an audience outside the US market. Fortunately, I stumbled on Nicolaj’s website and signed up for the beta program to read his Startup Funding book. The depth and quality of information in the book has been extremely helpful in allowing us to better understand the various investment channels, as well as in clarifying our thoughts on which may be right for us and when. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with even a hint of entrepreneurial values in them.” - Andrew Ward, CTO of MODL App, CEO of Scorchsoft

I coach startups in the EU to transform their idea into a successful business. During that process the finance part is a critical phase and a phase where future entrepreneurs are not familiar with. I had the opportunity to read the draft version and It amazed me from page one. This book gives a lot of insights and does so in an understandable, easy to read way. Theory and real life examples are naturally balanced.

It’s a fantastic book who give me a solid knowledge how an investor thinks.I recommend the book, it has a systematic flow in information.

Being a serial entrepreneur and business angel, Nicolaj provides lots of insights of how to get funding from a investor starting from co founders and family members for funding missions to eventually progressing to start up accelerators, business angels, venture capitals and public funding and banks and crowd funding..The book starts with good case studies - questioning the need for external funding in first place. I liked the Case study: Casper Blom – how to start a business at 12 years old with no funding.Chapter 2 focuses on how to develop your startup's risk/reward profile including influencing factors like market, business model, you, and the team and progress and traction. This chapter also has a good case study - Case study: Mofibo – why the CEO was the onlyreason the venture capital (VC) fund invested.Chapter 3 focuses on Who invests in what and when - Elaborates the investor market by segmenting the investors like VCs, Angels etc.. more inclined to invest in high risk and high reward segment while conservatives like banks etc.. more inclined towards the low risk and low reward quadrant. One more key point I liked was profiling of investment communities into WHEN they invest in life cycle in addition to where they invest.Nicoloaj has taught me something new here. Having different investors involved as appropriately in life cycle with a good case study - Case study: Funding for The CloakRoom – different investors for different stagesChapter 4 is an important one - Why can’t you find an investor? - Elaborates on why investors don't invest on ideas alone. Builds on 3 factors (Market, team, technology) that makes investors to invest. After this chapter this book focuses on different evolutionary investor profiles like co founders as investors to friends and family members to VCs to banks and crowd sourcing. What I liked about the book - Associated concise real world examples that will stick with you for a long time along with each chapter ending with a few summary key takeaway elements.I would recommend this book strongly because it delivers what the tile says - The Startup Funding Book..

Nicolaj wrote a very pragmatic and provided and comprehensive portrayal of prospective ways of fund raising. This book is a very practical guide for any aspiring startup bug . It tried to encapsulate all defined phases of gig..to approach investors in which stage and how meaningful to present target investor in a very practical way.I liked the examples shared and some are applicable to my journey also. The author clearly able to present the internal thoughts of VCs and angel investors. The author describes very detailed from both the entrepreneurs’ perspective and various kinds of investors' side to better connecting the perceptive gap confronting start-up funding issues. In today's very fast moving world of innovative ideas, it is very much critical to match founder and possible investor. Often some people receive funds very early which may or may not be positive.I liked chapter 4 on “why can’t you find an investor? And Chapter 10 “Public funding” my situation was extremely well described here and author very clearly able to pinpoint issues. Also, issues with family funding and friend’s money are well articulated. However, for next edition, my wish list would be to consider Startup funding issues in Asian geography also.Let me say that anyone interested in the startup culture must immediately grab a copy of this book. Author has dissected the entire process of startup funding.Traditionally funding of startup has been shrouded in mystery and urban legends. Nicolaj clarifies the mystery in a masterful narrative. This is an admirable effort. Well done, Nicolaj

This book is a very useful guide in understanding when, where and how to look for external funders for a business project. It is really well-grounded, based on real-life examples and provides very useful material to work on own projects.I like its structured approach and review of different scenarios, explaining what works and what does not from the funder side. One of the most useful parts, in my view is about raising money from friends and family and related consequences. I have seen how mistakes, described in the book, create problems in real life, when people, who invest, do not really understand what they are doing (and neither did those, who asked and received the money). In particular I liked the Chapter 13 about the business plans and other material to use, when communicating with potential investors. I have shared this with a number of people I know and it was really appreciated. We have also found, that working on development of executive summary and the pitch deck actually helped the start-up founders focus their own minds on what their project is about, why it matters and how to make it interesting for people for investment.I am sure I will refer to this book regularly.
