Since the weather has turned off nice I have been trying a new form of exercise, running. However, I've had trouble staying focused and staying on target. After reading this book I realize a lot of my problem was understanding the need for a proper diet and how to stay hydrated, and the breathing techniques was another area I never gave thought to. I just thought you ran.I would just "eat" then later run, always ending in discouragement because of my endurance. I understand now why diet, proper hydration and breathing is so important. The book even provides a one week meal plan to get you started on the right path.There is so much information in this book, whether you are looking to run competitively, or just to get yourself in shape, all the answers can be found in this book that will make you a success in your running efforts.I've only used the techniques in this book a couple days now but have to say already my mind and body is enjoying the running more than it ever did before.I am believing I too could run in a Marathon and contemplating boosting up my overall goals. I love this book and the way the author puts believe in your efforts.As you read through this book it becomes apparent very quickly the author does know what they are talking about. If you're looking for a "complete" book on running you won't be disappointed.Easy 5 start to the Author.
I am a woman, not exactly young or in peak condition, and I just ran my first 1/2 marathon a few weeks back. I would have loved to have had this book while I was training. I very much underestimated how difficult it would be, even though I had read and applied everything I could find on the subject for the year leading up to it. The author writes: "the physical part of running is only a small portion of how far you can go." This is so true!Although the focus of this book is on running a marathon, it is equally as valuable to anyone who is training to run the half marathon or even a 5K or 10K. The author goes over in great detail diet, including menus and what to eat when eating out and are in training -- so helpful! Also covered is how to keep hydrated, proper running form, how to choose the best running shoes and gear, strength training, mental training and so much more!I finished my first half marathon. Barely. I know I would have done so much better if I had had this book while training. I definitely plan to use it while training for my next one.I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars! Highly Recommend!

A very good friend of mine runs 5 miles (or more) almost every day! She began this regimen as part of a weight loss journey & now cannot imagine her life without running. At some point in the future, she's told me she'd love to run a marathon, just for the sake of doing so! I, on the other hand, am a self proclaimed couch potato. When I found this book, I decided I'd give it a try. As a former member of the military, I really enjoyed the author's concise, humorous style! She tackles the subject matter head on, with no excuses. Who knew there are so many components to running?? I learned a great deal about diet & giving up those "fatty cakes". Hydration & proper form also play a very important role in a runner's endurance level, as does choosing the proper gear. I may not be marathon ready just yet, but this book inspired me to get up & get moving!
This is an excellent guide if you've never ran before and need to develop a plan to start running. .. . I absolutely loved it and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Running is not enough--that's it--in a nutshell. This book makes a very persuasive argument in favor of ongoing weight training with specific recommended exercises while you're slowly and steadily increasing your running distances. I'm new to this running business, and I thought running was all I needed to do to train for a half-marathon. Wrong! Good thing I still have time to do it right. A great book for the beginning runner.
This book is great. It is really focused on how to prepare for a marathon and nothing else. This book is written by an experienced Army soldier. There is no fooling around, it emulates the Army training. It takes you from what your diet should be, to all the non-running exercises you need. It starts you out slowly and progresses you forward, until you are ready, to run the marathon. It has a bunch of graphs and workout routines. All you need is a real desire to run a marathon and this book. This book will really help you reach that finish line.
